Book excerpt: The Florentine painter Andrea del Castagno (c. 1419-1457) was a central figure of the Italian Renaissance, and his work appears in every major survey textbook on the period. Giorgio Vasari described him a master of drawing and a constant innovator. Vasari also however claimed that Andrea was a cold-blooded assassin, a man who left a self-portrait as Judas and who had murdered a fellow painter to obtain the secret of painting in oil. When Andrea del Castagno drew, he drew blood. The story is untrue; the few documents on the artist suggest an uneventful life and a very successful short career. Yet Vasaris tale is suggestive, and it serves as the starting point of this book, the first monograph study of Andrea del Castagno in more than three decades. Many of the painter's visual experiments were artistic dead-ends, seldom or never repeated, and they reveal the limits of a whole emerging visual system. This is painting that struggles to update old schemata for new antiquarian concerns and a new artistic order; natural, supernatural, and imaginary phenomena are all uneasily subject to the same norms of depiction and the same totalizing visibility. In a series of close analyses of key works, this book argues that Andrea del Castagno's art of creative disruption lays bare the problems and paradigms of early Western art. It is a limit case at the moment when the idea of art was itself coming into being.

In this comprehensive study Marita Horster gives an account of the artist's life and examines his works in detail. She provides transcriptions of documents relating to Castagno's life and work, and quotes Vasari's biography in full, in the original Italian. She also lists painters connected with Castagno and describes his influence on pupils, contemporaries, and followers. A complete critical catalog, including lost works and rejected attributions, follows her introductory essay. All of the extant works are illustrated, and the striking use of details brings out the grace and subtlety of Castagno's lines. Some works mistakenly attributed to Castagno are also reproduced, along with comparative works by other artists. Book excerpt: If the fifteenth century in Italy has been seen as the moment when the constellation of disciplines known as "the humanities" begins to take shape, it was also a time when a "crisis in the humanities" - their value, their limits, who and what they included or excluded - was also manifest. A largely nineteenth century construction of "Renaissance humanism" has indelibly cast humanist pursuits in terms of writing, with arts of making or techne sometimes idealized as a second order manifestation of humanist ideas. This book re-examines the career of one socially and intellectually ambitious artist, Andrea Mantegna (1431-1506) and his intellectual network, to re-open questions of the locations of humanism, the notion of "humanist art," or painting as a form of discourse that far from being ancillary to poetry, history, or rhetoric, served as a model for all three. It will be shown that the place of normativity or typicality that Andrea Mantegna occupies in the History of Art - "Early Renaissance artist," "artist as antiquarian," "Albertian perspectivist," has kept from view the more radical potential of his work for a re-description of early Renaissance painting. The major works examined here - the Ovetari Chapel, the Camera Picta, the altarpieces for Padua and Verona, the Triumphs of Caesar, adopt strikingly original means to address their beholder, and to control and even produce their spatial and ideological milieu, challenging conventional notions of "the gaze" and how it operates in early Renaissance art. Furthermore, Mantegna's representations entail a striking integration of writing and painting as modes of transmission: Mantegna and his audience were highly attentive to the materiality of text, image, and object in the transmission of knowledge. Several of Mantegna works in which architecture or sculpture are depicted (such as The Introduction of the Cult of Cybele to Rome) seem preoccupied by the stability of meaning in the artistic object in circumstances of displacement or commodification. The Triumphs - a monumental series of canvases programmatically devoted to the "bringing back" of the riches of a lost world - offer a programmatic pictorial characterization of what we now call "Renaissance art," engaging its stylistic desiderata, its technical accomplishments - and, in ways that exceed any theory committed to writing - its ideological implicatedness.

Book excerpt: "Painting as a Modern Art in Early Renaissance Italy" reconstructs a historical concept of modern art on the basis of sources written between the 1390s and 1440s. The central point of reference in these sources was Giotto, the early fourteenth-century painter who, as one writer put it in 1442, "first modernized (modernizavit) ancient and mosaic figures." The word "modern" was used in a wide variety of ways throughout this period, some quite polemical, others rather prosaic. To call art (ars) modern, however, was to invoke a stable, well-defined concept whose roots ran deep in late-medieval intellectual life. According to this concept, to make an art modern was to set it on a new foundation in science (scientia) and rationalize it accordingly. As familiar as this formulation may sound in principle, each and every one of its key terms--art, modernity, science, rationality--meant something strikingly different in this period than it does in our time. The hallmark of modern art was not verisimilitude or expression or virtually any of the achievements that art historians associate with Giotto today, but rather the invention of techniques that aimed to imitate nature in its very manner of operation, aligning the concrete, step-by-step process of painting with the inner workings of nature itself. By reclaiming this concept and tracking its complex relation to early Renaissance concerns such as linear perspective and the canon of proportion, the book not only establishes a novel framework for the visual analysis of fourteenth- and fifteenth-century Italian painting, but also unravels a fundamental master narrative of Western art history from within, clearing the way for renewed discussions of alternative modernities, including those that precede the story of modernism as we know it. --Publisher's website.
