Book excerpt: This highly original and personal exploration of Tadao Ando’s work, one of Japan’s leading architects, traverses both the physical and spiritual world. In 2012, Philippe Séclier visited Tadao Ando’s iconic Church of the Light, and was immediately compelled to journey around the world to further study the architect’s buildings. This unique presentation of Ando’s work is the result of what turned into a nine-year project to photograph 130 buildings. Walking around each structure, trying to find the proper framing, helped Séclier understand Ando’s genius for siting and composition. Loosely organized by chronology, each building is represented in numerous black and white images, arranged like a mosaic on the page. These fragmented views correspond to Ando’s own philosophy of the logic of structure and geometry. This “atlas” embraces not only the geographic but also thematic range of Ando’s oeuvre—from transit stations in Tokyo and Kobe to art museums in Fort Worth, Texas and Provence, France; from an artists’ retreat on the Mexican coast to the now-demolished Piccadilly Gardens in Manchester, England; from a theater in Milan, Italy, to an upscale restaurant in New York City. Séclier’s photographs of Ando’s numerous religious structures brilliantly illustrate his use of light and shadow to evoke spiritual depth and timelessness while his short texts offer concise observations of each building. A helpful appendix pinpoints the geographic diversity and range of Ando’s oeuvre.

Download or read book Tadao Ando Living with Light written by Philip Jodidio and published by Rizzoli Publications. This book was released on 2021-04-13 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book showcases recent houses by the world-renowned Japanese minimalist architect, offering unprecedented access to his thought process through more than 100 photographs, line drawings, sketches, and plans. Tadao Ando is one of the best-known and most influential contemporary architects with a minimalistic aesthetic and love of natural materials like glass and concrete--proof that less is more. This volume features ten houses and examines his approach to these designs. Viewed as a collection, these houses serve to demonstrate the wide range of Ando's prodigious genius through lavish and striking photographs. Characteristics of his work include large expanses of unadorned architectural concrete walls combined with wooden or stone floors and large windows. He uses simple methods to solve complicated and small spaces and turns them into spaces with breathtaking landscapes. With precise and beautiful photographs accompanied by Tadao Ando's sketches, drawings, and plans, this volume presents several unseen and little published works, from the Bosco Studio and House facing the Pacific Ocean in Oaxaca, Mexico (2014)to a penthouse in Manhattan for a Japanese collector, completed in 2019.

Book excerpt: This comprehensive monograph on Pritzker Prize-winning architect Tadao Ando covers the span of his impressive career, with previously unpublished material and insight into his sources of inspiration. This in-depth monograph offers insight into Tadao Ando's sober and elegant architecture through photographs, architectural drawings, and descriptions of eighty of his most significant works. His notable works span the globe: London's Tate Modern; St. Louis's Pulitzer Arts Foundation; Osaka's Church of the Light; Paris's UNESCO Meditation Space; Venice's Palazzo Grassi; Abu Dhabi's Maritime Museum; and exceptional buildings in South Korea, Taiwan, China, Sri Lanka, Mexico, Germany, and throughout the United States. Japanese design principles--from the use of concrete, simple geometric volumes, and the integration of natural elements such as light or water--are essential elements that Ando uses to provoke a physical experience through his architecture. An interview with the architect accompanies his own writings and critical essays on various aspects of his work. A portfolio of Ando's black-and-white photographs and colored-pencil drawings from his previously unpublished travel notebooks provide new insight into his sources of inspiration. The book is completed with a biography and a chronology of his works to date, including some unrealized projects.

Book excerpt: The minimalist concrete architecture of Tadao Ando has roots both in Japanese traditions and in Western architecture. This book begins with both contexts: it explores how Ando unites Japanese tradition with a contemporary Western architectural idiom. By analyzing systematically and chronologically the roots and sources that have influenced the thinking of the Pritzker Prize-winning architect, the author communicates the principles and constants to which Ando's buildings can be traced back, and at the same time he places them in the appropriate context within the architect's characteristic ideas and intentions. Yann Nussaume teaches at the Ecole Nationale Supérieure d'architecture in Paris and is the author of numerous publications on Japanese and Chinese architecture.

Book Nothingness Tadao Ando s Christian Sacred Space

Download or read book Nothingness Tadao Ando s Christian Sacred Space written by Jin Baek and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2009-06-12 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based around an interview with Tadao Ando, this book explores the influence of the Buddhist concept of nothingness on Ando’s Christian architecture, and sheds new light on the cultural significance of the buildings of one of the world’s leading contemporary architects. Specifically, this book situates Ando’s churches, particularly his world-renowned Church of the Light (1989), within the legacy of nothingness expounded by Kitaro Nishida (1870-1945), the father of the Kyoto Philosophical School. Linking Ando’s Christian architecture with a philosophy originating in Mahayana Buddhism illuminates the relationship between the two religious systems, as well as tying Ando’s architecture to the influence of Nishida on post-war Japanese art and culture.

Book excerpt: Werner Blaser, architect and author of more than one hundred books, introduces the reader to the world of Tadao Ando's sunken architectures. In fascinating photographs, a method of construction is presented that has its roots in the traditional "earth dwellings" of northern and north-western China. Yet, Tadao Ando's in-ground buildings are no dark, cave-like structures. The interiors are illuminated through open atriums and large, deep-drawn areas of glass, thus giving light an almost palpable form. Stillness and contemplativeness rank among the qualities of this architecture, corresponding herein to Far Eastern spirit. In the face of increasing environmental damage and urban housing problems, architectural strategies have to be developed that respect nature and do not put extra pressure on urban surroundings. With his sunken structures, Tadao Ando succeeds in building in accordance with nature, at the same time connecting tradition and present - thus making the cultural history of building relevant for the present.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The newest volume in our popular Conversations series features Japanese architect Tadao Ando. One of the most celebrated living architects, Ando is best known for crafting serenely austere structures that fuse Japanese building traditions with Western modernism. His minimalist masterworks-geometric forms clad in silky-smooth exposed concrete-are suffused with natural light and set in perfect harmony with the landscape. In these highlights from lectures delivered at the University of Tokyo's Graduate School of Architecture, Ando candidly describes his experiences as a largely self-taught practitioner, tracing his development from an early interest in the traditional building craft of his native Japan through his political awakening in the turbulent 1960s to his current stature as one of the world's foremost architects. In addition to exploring his aesthetic influences and working process, Ando offers students a road map not only for maintaining professional integrity, but also for becoming effective agents of change in the world.

Book Seven Interviews with Tadao Ando

Download or read book Seven Interviews with Tadao Ando written by Tadao Andō and published by Third Millennium Information. This book was released on 2002 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book accompanies and celebrates the opening of new Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, designed by Japanese architect Tadao Ando. The interviews reveal Ando's central belief that architecture is all about creating "exquisite and wonderful memories" which come about when a building allows its occupants to connect with themselves and make their intellectual dreams become possible. This is what gives life to architectural space. But Ando also recognizes that creation of such memories must involve the architect taking risks, particularly with materials and location; in the case of Fort Worth, the building's double skin of concrete volume encased in a glass-skin box is entirely new. These concepts are discussed not only within the specific context of the Fort Worth building, but also within the context of Ando's wider underlying philosophy and beliefs. Michael Auping considers the key influences in Ando's career, particularly his initial experience as a builder, his early travels around his native Japan, the influence of ancient classical buildings such as the Pantheon in Rome, and the work of artists like Brancusi, Henry Moore and Isamu Noguchi. The influence of other architects, such as Le Corbusier, Lloyd Wright, but especially Louis Khan, is also discussed in this context. Finally the interviews consider Ando's use of concrete as a building material both in its historic context and in terms of its relation to his theories on colour, space and depth.

Book excerpt: Super Potato Design is the first full-length book to present the work and conceptual ideas of the internationally renowned Japanese design firm Super Potato, founded by Takashi Sugimoto. Super Potato's powerful designs for the interiors of restaurants, shops and hotels, as well as Takashi Sugimoto's designs for tea ceremony spaces and utensils, are richly complex compositions of materials which create simple, strong spaces. Using traditional Japanese building materials such as bamboo, wood, and stone, but crating original yet timeless spaces, Super Potato's designs avoid specific stylistic characterizations and short-lived fashion. By finding contemporary expression for important concepts present in traditional Japan and combining materials in unexpected ways to create exciting spaces, Super Potato's work has had a significant impact on interior design in Japan and throughout Asia. Super Potato Design is generously illustrated with 320 full-color photographs by the respected Japanese photographer Yoshio Shiratori, who has recorded Super Potatos projects since the firm's conception in 1973. Architect and Japan scholar Mira Locher introduces the ideas and influences of Takashi Sugimoto, the founder and principle designer of Super Potato, and provides a thorough explanation of each project. Architectural drawings further describe the projects. A forward by Tadao Anso, interviews between Takashi Sugimoto and architect Kiyoshi Sey Takeyama, and also graphic designer Kenya Hara, explore the ideas relevant to Japanese designers today. A list of the Complete Works of Super Potato rounds off the book.
