Book And the Crooked Shall Be Made Straight

Download or read book And the Crooked Shall Be Made Straight written by S. Y. Agnon and published by Toby Press Limited. This book was released on 2017 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: S.Y. Agnon's first book-length, breakthrough work, originally published in Hebrew in 1912 and now available in English for the first time in a fully annotated edition. This novella depicts an impossible moral dilemma faced by the tragic hero Menasheh Chaim, in mid-19th century Buczacz (in today's western Ukraine). In the framework of a traditional Jewish folktale of old world Eastern European Jewry, Agnon delivers a profoundly modern piece of literature, which benefits from the tension between plot and genre.

Book And the Crooked Places Made Straight

Download or read book And the Crooked Places Made Straight written by David Chalmers and published by Johns Hopkins University Press+ORM. This book was released on 2012-11-07 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Marvelously comprehensive and superbly written. An exceptionally valuable overview of the 1960s, replete with astute interpretations and commentary.” —David J. Garrow, author of the Pulitzer Prize–winning Bearing the Cross: Martin Luther King, Jr., and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference David Chalmers’s widely acclaimed overview of the 1960s describes how the civil rights movement touched off a growing challenge to traditional values and arrangements. Chalmers recounts the judicial revolution that set national standards for race, politics, policing, and privacy. He examines the long, losing war on poverty and the struggle between the media and the government over the war in Vietnam. He follows feminism’s “second wave” and the emergence of the environmental, consumer, and citizen action movements. He also explores the worlds of rock, sex, and drugs, and the entwining of the youth culture, the counterculture, and the American marketplace. This newly revised edition covers the conservative counter-revolution and cultural wars. It carries the legacy of the 1960s forward: from Tom Hayden’s idealistic 1962 Port Huron Statement through Newt Gingrich’s 1994 “Contract with America” and Grover Norquist’s twenty-first century “Tax Payer’s Protection Pledge.” “With its hint of passion and irony, the title of David Chalmers’s book aptly captures the complexities of his study. Beautifully written, it is more than a recitation of the actors and events of the 1960s. It helps us to make sense of the decade.” —Dan T. Carter, author of Scottsboro: A Tragedy of the American South

Book excerpt: First published in 1970, this book helped spur the modern rise of postmillennialism. Revelation's details are often perplexing, even baffling, and yet its main meaning is clear: it is a book about victory. It tells us that our faith can only result in victory. "This is the victory that overcomes the world, even our faith" (1 John 5:4). This is why knowing Revelation is so important. It assures us of our victory and celebrates it. Genesis 3 tells us of the fall of man into sin and death. Revelation gives us man's victory in Christ over sin and death. The vast and total victory, in time and eternity, set forth by John in Revelation is too important to bypass. This victory is celebrated in Daniel and elsewhere in the Bible. We are not given a Messiah who is a loser. These eschatological texts make clear that the essential good news of the entire Bible is victory, total victory.

Book Joseph Smith and the Book of Enoch

Download or read book Joseph Smith and the Book of Enoch written by Mark Lines and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2023-07-19 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The sources of Joseph Smith's literary works remain the most enigmatic aspect of Mormon history. Smith's "translation projects," the Book of Mormon, Book of Moses, the Inspired Bible and Book of Abraham, include prophecies, visions and allusions to the ancient biblical prophet Enoch. Before Joseph Smith began writing his visions of Enoch, Oxford professor Richard Laurence revived interest in the prophet through his 1821 English translation of the ancient text, the Book of Enoch, known as 1 Enoch. For decades, some historians have denied that Joseph Smith ever had access to the Book of Enoch, but many reserve the possibility that it directly influenced Smith's works. The author of this book documents the many similarities between the Book of Enoch and Smith's Mormon texts. Using source analysis and historical context, the author identifies the uniquely Mormon words, storylines, imagery and concepts that appear in Richard Laurence's translation of the ancient religious text.
