Book Analysis of the New Metals

Download or read book Analysis of the New Metals written by W. T. Elwell and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2016-07-29 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Analysis of the New Metals: Titanium, Zirconium, Hafnium, Niobium, Tantalum, Tungsten and their Alloys focuses on methods for the analysis of titanium, zirconium, hafnium, niobium, tantalum, tungsten, and their alloys. Emphasis is on the procedures used in Imperial Metal Industries (Kynoch) Limited's laboratories for the analysis of these metals. These procedures include the oxide-resin procedure, solution procedure, and the point-to-plane spectrographic procedure. Comprised of six chapters, this book begins with an overview of special procedures for obtaining representative samples, including the use of titanium or zirconium sponge (Kroll process) as well as titanium granules (ICI sodium process). Subsequent chapters discuss the identification of titanium and its alloys such as aluminum, boron, calcium, carbon, and copper by means of the point-to-plane spectrographic procedure, a Fuess metal spectroscope, and chemical spot-tests; spectroscopic analysis of zirconium, zirconium alloys, and ionide-refined hafnium; and spectroscopic analysis of niobium, tantalum, tungsten, and their alloys. This monograph will be useful for undergraduate students, educators, practitioners, and researchers in metallurgy.

Book Engineering Properties of Nickel and Nickel Alloys

Download or read book Engineering Properties of Nickel and Nickel Alloys written by John Laurence Everhart and published by Springer. This book was released on 1971-06 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nickel is probably the most versatile of the metallic elements. Among alloys containing nickel are some having high corrosion resistance and others that retain excellent strength and ductility from temperatures approaching ab solute zero to those near 2000 F. Some nickel alloys are strongly magnetic, others are virtually nonmagnetic; some have low rates of thermal expansion, others have high rates; some have high electrical resistivities; some have practically constant moduli of elasticity; one has an "elastic" memory. In addition, nickel is magnetostrictive. With this wide range of characteristics, it is not surprising that there are several thousand alloys containing nickel. It is impossible to consider all of these compositions in this publication and, therefore, several alloys in each of a number of categories have been selected to indicate the properties to be expected of the group. Low-alloy and constructional nickel-containing steels have been excluded on two grounds. To do them justice would require excessive space and, in addition, their applications differ generally from these of the materials under discussion. On the other hand, nickel-containing stainkss steels have been included because many of their applications fall into the same areas as those of a number of the high-nickel alloys. Many of the compositions discussed are proprietary alloys and they are protected by trademarks. A list of the trademarks and their owners is in cluded in the appendix.

Book Interaction of Hafnium with Certain Transition Metals

Download or read book Interaction of Hafnium with Certain Transition Metals written by V. N. Svechnikov and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite its high cost, hafnium has been gaining wider acceptance in modern technologies. Owing to its refractory properties combined with high solubility and its positive effect on heat resistance, hafnium has been used as a component of a number of new construction materials containing niobium, tantalum, molybdenum and tungsten. The paper analyzes the effect of hafnium on the properties of widely used alloys containing iron, nickel, copper, aluminum and presents phase diagrams of hafnium with manganese, iron, cobalt and nickel over the entire range of concentrations. Book Oxidation Behavior of Laser Clad Nickel aluminum chromium hafnium Alloys

Download or read book Oxidation Behavior of Laser Clad Nickel aluminum chromium hafnium Alloys written by Carl Robert Ribaudo and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Controversy regarding the mechanism(s) responsible for the retention of alumina scales formed on NiAlCr alloys containing reactive elements remains. Laser cladding is the process where a mechanical mixture of powders is rapidly melted and fused to a solid substrate using a CO$sb2$ laser. The effects of laser cladding upon scale retention on NiAlCrHf alloys after cyclic and isothermal exposure to air were investigated. The stress developed in the scale during cooling after exposure was estimated using a thermoelastic model. Additions of up to $approx$2${1over2}$ wt % Hf increasingly promote retention of scales grown at 1200$spcirc$C. Laser clad samples containing $approx$2${1over2}$ wt % Hf retained almost intact scales. The improvement in scale retention is due to improved toughness in scales containing hafnia-rich polycrystallites possibly via microcracking initiated by anisotropic thermall contraction of the hafnia. Laser cladding provides a large concentration of $approx$1$mu$m Hf-rich particles that are precursors of the hafnia in the scale as well as a fine dendrite spacing that reduces the mean free distance between particles.

Book Trends in Usage of Rhenium

Download or read book Trends in Usage of Rhenium written by and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 19 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rhenium is a rare, expensive, high-melting metal with some unique properties, including a ductilizing effect on several brittle refractory metals. It occurs as an impurity in molybdenite which is associated, in small amounts, with copper ores. Production and consumption have been less than a ton per year, with the potential production, while substantially larger, still definitely limited. Research is disclosing probable valuable applications, leading to the recommendation that efforts to conserve rhenium for probable future applications should receive support. (Author).
