Starting with an examination of Japanese gift-wrapping, Joy Hendry demonstrates how our expectations are often influenced by cultural factors which may blind us to an appreciation of underlying intent. She extends this approach to the study of polite language as the wrapping of thoughts and intentions, garments as body wrappings, constructions and gardens as wrapping of space. Hendry shows how this extends even to the ways in which people may be wrapped in seating arrangements, or meetings and drinking customs may be constrained by temporal versions of wrapping. Throughout the book, Hendry considers ways in which groups of people use such symbolic forms to impress and manipulate one another, and points out a Western tendency to underestimate such nonverbal communication, or reject it as mere decoration. Although Okinawa Prefecture comprises only one percent of Japan's population, its writers have been winning a disproportionate number of literary awards in recent years--including the prestigious Akutagawa Prize for fiction, which was awarded to Matayoshi Eiki in 1996 and to Medoruma Shun in 1997. Both Matayoshi and Medoruma are represented in this anthology, which includes a wide range of fiction as well as a sampling of poetry from the 1920s to the present day. Modern Okinawa has been forged by a history of conquest and occupation by mainland Japan and the United States. Islands of Protest attempts to address this lacuna with this new selection of critically acclaimed modern and contemporary works in English. The anthology includes poetry, fiction, and drama, drawing on Okinawa's distinct culture and subtropical natural environment to convey the emotions and tensions present in everyday life. Tōma Hiroko's poem "Backbone" juxtaposes the natural environment of aquamarine beaches and subtropical flora and fauna with the built environment of America's military bases. Stories by two of Okinawa's most dynamic contemporary authors display wide breadth, from the preservation of island dances and burial practices in Sakiyama Tami's "Island Confinement" and "Come Swaying, Come Swinging" to the bold, disquieting themes of violence and comfort women in Medoruma Shun's "Hope," "Taiwan Woman," and "Tree of Butterflies." Aware that the officially recorded version he learned in school omits and distorts, he turns to a quimboiseur named Papa Longouä. This old man of the forest, a healer, seer, and storyteller, knows the oral tradition and its relation to the powers of the land and the forces of nature. He tells of the love-hate relationship between the Longouä and Bäluse families, whose ancestors were brought as slaves to Martinique. Upon arrival, Longouä immediately escaped and went to live in the hills as a maroon. Bäluse remained in slavery. The intense relationship that had formed between the two men in Africa continued and came to encompass the relations between their masters, or, in the case of Longouä, his would-be master, and their descendants. The Fourth Century closes the gap between the families as Papa Longouä, last of his line, conveys the history to Mathieu Bäluse, who becomes his heir.

His parents reluctantly decide it will be best if Vladimir and his mother leave his father behind to defend Yugoslavia and fight the now advancing Soviet Army while they flee to Austria. Finally the family is re-united in an Austrian refugee camp and ultimately they are able to immigrate to America after the war. For the next forty years Vladimir designs national and international expositions – including several Nuclear Information Centers in the U.S. and Asia — and receives numerous awards for his work in design and graphic arts. One night, after Vladimir has received a phone call in his hotel room that his father has died from a heart attack, he realizes that he never took the time to listen to his father’s stories about World War I, the Russian Revolution or his father’s battles against the Communists in his native land. Like his father, Vladimir, too, is a wealth of unique historical information about an important period in the history of the world. Odyssey of a DP is his contribution to preserving those stories and paying tribute to his lineage and his family.
