To demonstrate to Latter Day Saints that "" Mormonism"" is what it exactly what it claims to be a genuine restoration of the Gospel. Mormonism is an genuine restoration of the Gospel as it was taught by disciples of the Primitive Church. This is important because through out the world Mormonism is labeled as a non-scriptural, non-Christian ""cult"", which departs in alarming in alarming ways from the traditional concepts of the bible. The claim that Mormonism is a ""cult"", and not a Christian religion, is based on the fact that Mormonism accepts none of the traditional creeds of ""orthodoxy"". The chief difficulty with this assessment is that so-called ""orthodoxy"" never existed before the fourth or fifth centuries, until the Church's original teachings had been radically altered by Greek- informed metaphysical concepts, bearing little relationship to the thought of the earliest Christians!

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mormonism Refuted in the Light of Scripture and History: A Testimony to the Historical Church It is the spiritual, the Christian, condition Of Mormonism into which I shall enquire. The ostensible purpose and mission Of the Church Of Christ is, and ever has been, to deal with soul conditions, and leave the material conditions to the providence Of him who says Seek ye first his kingdom and his righteousness and all these things shall be added unto you. (matt. 6: Hence, I Shall endeavor to show that the part Of the doctrines of Mormonism in which it differs from the historical Church, is radically foreign to the entire association Of Christian ideas, - foreign to all teaching Of the Christian Church through all times and in every locality. This work is in humbleness intended also to be a warning to the many earnest souls who have not yet been deceived by this well-planned deception, but who may yet in the future be approached by its emissaries a warning and a reminder that an is not in the desert. (matt. 24 26) but that God is everywhere. Again assuring the reader that the writing of these pages has been prompted only by the love Of truth, and that no bitterness has in any way been in tended, and Sincerely hoping that this work may be accepted as an humble Offering on the altar Of the faith that saves, it is sent forth in the name Of the blessed Redeemer, to whom be glory forever and ever. Book The Pearl of Greatest Price

Download or read book The Pearl of Greatest Price written by Terryl Givens and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2019-09-04 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Pearl of Greatest Price narrates the history of Mormonism's fourth volume of scripture, canonized in 1880. The authors track its predecessors, describe its several components, and assess their theological significance within the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Four principal sections are discussed, along with attendant controversies associated with each. The Book of Moses purports to be a Mosaic narrative missing from the biblical version of Genesis. Too little treated in the scholarship on Mormonism, these chapters, produced only months after the Book of Mormon was published, actually contain the theological nucleus of Latter-day Saint doctrines as well as a virtual template for the Restoration Joseph Smith was to effect. In The Pearl of Greatest Price, the author covers three principal parts that are the focus of many of the controversies engulfing Mormonism today. These parts are The Book of Abraham, The Book of Moses, and The Joseph Smith History. Most controversial of all is the Book of Abraham, a production that arose out of a group of papyri Smith acquired, along with four mummies, in 1835. Most of the papyri disappeared in the great Chicago Fire, but surviving fragments have been identified as Egyptian funerary documents. This has created one of the most serious challenges to Smith's prophetic claims the LDS church has faced. LDS scholars, however, have developed several frameworks for vindicating the inspiration of the resulting narrative and Smith's calling as a prophet. The author attempts to make sense of Smith's several, at times divergent, accounts of his First Vision, one of which is canonized as scripture. He also assesses the creedal nature of Smith's "Articles of Faith," in the context of his professed anti-creedalism. In sum, this study chronicles the volume's historical legacy and theological indispensability to the Latter-day Saint tradition, as well as the reasons for its resilience and future prospects in the face of daunting challenges.

Book Binding Earth and Heaven

Download or read book Binding Earth and Heaven written by Gary Shepherd and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2015-06-13 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Binding Earth and Heaven, Gary Shepherd and Gordon Shepherd use early nineteenth-century Mormonism as a case study to examine questions about how new religious movements may, as rare exceptions, survive and even eventually become successful in spite of intense opposition. Initial scorn and contempt for Mormonism—the fledgling creation of the young Joseph Smith—quickly elevated to mob violence as both Smith’s innovative teachings and converted followers proliferated, resulting in the widely held perception that the Mormons constituted a social menace. This book examines how Mormonism attracted and maintained the loyalty of increasing numbers of people despite mounting hostilities and severe hardships. The book focuses on the unique Mormon ritual (and accompanying doctrinal underpinnings) of “patriarchal blessings.” Patriarchal blessings were an innovative adaptation of the Old Testament practice of fathers making quasi-legal pronouncements over the heads of their sons—a way of verbally conferring rights, promises, admonition, and guidance to heirs. Binding Earth and Heaven shows how the organizational complexities of this practice contributed to strengthening and sustaining member faith and fealty, thereby bolstering the continuity and development of Mormonism.
