It would have been impossible, in my own peculiar circum stances, to have described and pictured the objects fairly, if I had not been intrusted with them for a considerable time; and my best acknowledgments are due to Mr. Mayer, Mr. Ecroyd Smith, and Mrs. Longueville, each of whose collections I was permitted to retain for two or three years. All of them are now carefully returned, with grateful acknowledgments. In group ing the objects for the plates, I secured the assistance of Mr. Smith; and he has also explained two or three classes of objects, to which he had paid considerable attention.
