I know no good reason for believing him to have been a member of the family of the same name in Boston; on the contrary, it may be taken as certain, that there were five or six families of this surname in Massachusetts, no two of which have been shown to have a common origin in England. I have long wished to try to give a correct account of the life of my own ancestor, John Oliver of Newbury; and the number of documents illustrating his English pedigree has seemed to me such as to warrant their appearance in this shape.
