Book excerpt: In the past decade Pakistan has become a country of immense importance to its region, the United States, and the world. With almost 200 million people, a 500,000-man army, nuclear weapons, and a large diaspora in Britain and North America, Pakistan is central to the hopes of jihadis and the fears of their enemies. Yet the greatest short-term threat to Pakistan is not Islamist insurgency as such, but the actions of the United States, and the greatest longterm threat is ecological change. Anatol Lieven's book is a magisterial investigation of this highly complex and often poorly understood country. Engagingly written, combining history and profound analysis with reportage from Lieven's extensive travels as a journalist and academic, Pakistan: A Hard Country is both utterly compelling and deeply revealing.

Download or read book Anatol and the magic moose written by Jörg Frost and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2022-07-27 with total page 81 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 12-year-old Anatol lives with his family and three siblings in the small Siberian village of Swerkos. The small farm that his family runs is just enough to live on, but not for the expensive medicines of the seriously ill Mikosch, Anatol's little brother. To support the family, Anatol would go moose hunting with his father on his 13th birthday. But they had no luck. A few days later it should succeed. Yes, he had seen a moose, but this one was strange. In his craziest dreams, Anatol would not have believed in the miracles that he experienced afterwards.

Book Climate Change and the Nation State

Download or read book Climate Change and the Nation State written by Anatol Lieven and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2020 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The climate emergency is intensifying, while international responses continue to falter. In Climate Change and the Nation State, Anatol Lieven outlines a revolutionary approach grounded in realist thinking. This involves redefining climate change as an existential threat to nation states - which it is - and mobilizing both national security elites and mass nationalism. He condemns Western militaries for neglecting climate change and instead prioritizing traditional but less serious threats. Lieven reminds us that nationalism is the most important force in motivating people to care about the wellbeing of future generations. The support of nationalism is therefore vital to legitimizing the sacrifices necessary to limit climate change and surviving and the effects of it (some of which are now inevitable). This will require greatly strengthened social and national solidarity across lines of class and race. Throughout, Lieven draws on historical examples to show how nationalism has helped enable past movements to implement progressive social reform. Lieven strongly supports plans for a "Green New Deal" in the USA and Europe. In order to implement and maintain such changes, however, it will be necessary to create dominant national consensuses like those that enabled and sustained the original New Deal and welfare states in Europe. Lieven criticizes sections of the environmentalist left for hindering this by their hostility to national interests, their utopian political naivet , their advancement of divisive cultural agendas, and their commitment to open borders. Radical and timely, Climate Change and the Nation State is an essential contribution to the debate on how to deal with a climatic crisis that if unchecked will threaten the survival of Western democracies and every organized human society.

Book A Companion to the Works of Arthur Schnitzler

Download or read book A Companion to the Works of Arthur Schnitzler written by Dagmar C. G. Lorenz and published by Camden House. This book was released on 2003 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fresh collection of essays on the work of one of the leading figures of the Viennese fin de siècle. This volume of specially commissioned essays takes a fresh look at the Viennese Jewish dramatist and prose writer Arthur Schnitzler. Fascinatingly, Schnitzler''s productive years spanned the final phase of the Habsburg monarchy, World War I, the First Austrian Republic, and the rise of National Socialism, and he realized earlier than many of his contemporaries the threat that racist anti-Semitism posed to the then almost complete assimilation of Austrian Jews. His writings also reflect the irresolvable conflict between emerging feminism and the relentless "scientific" discourse of misogyny, and he chronicles the collapse of traditional social structures at the end of the Habsburg monarchy and the struggles of the newly founded republic. In the 1950s Schnitzler''s powerful literary record assumed model character for Viennese Jewish intellectuals born after the Shoah, and his portrayal of gender relations and role expectations and casual sex are received with the same fascination today as they were by the audiences of his own time. Schnitzler remains a major figure in contemporary European culture, as his works are still widely read, performed, and adapted -- witness Stanley Kubrick''s adaptation of Schnitzler''s Traumnovelle as the 1999 film Eyes Wide Shut. In this volume a team of international scholars explores Schnitzler''s dramas and prose worksfrom contemporary critical vantage points, but within the context of Austria''s multicultural society at a time of unprecedented change.
