Book Encounters with Enlightenment

Download or read book Encounters with Enlightenment written by Saddhaloka and published by Windhorse Publications. This book was released on 2001 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We do not know if the Buddha could read or write. He left nothing other than the oral stories of his life, his inspiration and his teachings, passed from generation to generation. Later, his words and the incidents of his life were preserved for us on fragile palm leaves. These stories are as fresh and relevant today as they were when told under the cool moonlight of India 2,500 years ago. This collection of timeless, well-loved stories from the life of the Buddha is presented with simple elegance by Saddhaloka. By remaining faithful to the ancient Pali texts from which they are drawn, they allow us to enter the world of the Buddha and encounter an Enlightened One.

Book excerpt: When my concentrated mind was purified; I directed it to the knowledge of the recollection of past lives’ —The Buddha on the night of his enlightenment Associated with the living traditions of folk tale; drama and epic; the Jatakas recount the development of the Bodhisatta—the being destined to become the present Buddha in his final life—not just through the events of one lifetime but of hundreds. Written in Pali; the language of the Theravada Buddhist canon; the Jatakas comprise one of the largest and oldest collections of stories in the world dating from the fifth century BCE to the third century CE. Generations in South and South-East Asia have grown up with these tales. This volume contains twenty-six stories drawn from various ancient sources; and each story reflects one of the ten perfections—giving; restraint; renunciation; wisdom; strength; acceptance; truthfulness; resolve; loving kindness and equanimity. A detailed introduction elaborates on the ten perfections; explains the forms of enlightenment as well as the structure; and the historical and geographical contexts of the stories. Sarah Shaw brings to life the teachings of Buddhism for the scholar and lay reader alike.

Book Three G ndh r Ekottarik gama type S tras

Download or read book Three G ndh r Ekottarik gama type S tras written by Mark Allon and published by University of Washington Press. This book was released on 2001 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three Gandhari Ekottarikagama-Type Sutras continues the Gandharan Buddhist Texts studies of the first-century A.D. birch bark scrolls in the British Library's Kharosthi manuscript collection. It describes the text found on two fragments which constitute the lower part of a scroll and consists of the remnants of three sutras. All three sutras are relatively short and have an association with the number four, which suggests that they are from a Gandhar- Ekottarikagama, a collection of short discourses grouped according to numerical principles and one of the major collections of writings in the Buddhist canon. The first sutra records a discussion in which a brahman asks the Buddha four questions. The second su-tra, like the third, depicts the Buddha preaching to monks. The structure of this sutra is based on the four postures: walking, standing, sitting, and lying down. The Buddha's discourse in the third sutra concerns the four efforts (or abandonings). The book describes the condition of the scroll and its reconstruction; examines in detail the literary and textual background of the sutras, comparing them with other extant versions and parallels in other languages; and presents a transcription of the extant text, a reconstruction, and an English translation. It includes chapters on the paleography, orthography, phonology, and morphology of the text, and offers a detailed analytic commentary.
