Book excerpt: New York Times Bestseller "Compelling and utterly fascinating." —Lisa Wingate, author of Before We Were Yours An enthralling feat of historical suspense that unravels the extraordinary twists and turns in Anna Anderson's fifty-year battle to be recognized as Anastasia Romanov. Is she the Russian Grand Duchess or the thief of another woman's legacy? Countless others have rendered their verdict. Now it is your turn. Russia, July 17, 1918: Under direct orders from Vladimir Lenin, Bolshevik secret police force Anastasia Romanov, along with the entire imperial family, into a damp basement in Siberia, where they face a merciless firing squad. None survive. At least that is what the executioners have always claimed. Germany, February 17, 1920: A young woman bearing an uncanny resemblance to Anastasia Romanov is pulled shivering and senseless from a canal. Refusing to explain her presence in the freezing water or even acknowledge her rescuers, she is taken to the hospital where an examination reveals that her body is riddled with countless horrific scars. When she finally does speak, this frightened, mysterious young woman claims to be the Russian grand duchess. As rumors begin to circulate through European society that the youngest Romanov daughter has survived the massacre at Ekaterinburg, old enemies and new threats are awakened. The question of who Anna Anderson is and what actually happened to Anastasia Romanov spans fifty years and touches three continents. This thrilling saga is every bit as moving and momentous as it is harrowing and twisted.

Book The False Anastasia

    Book Details:
  • Author : Pierre Gilliard
  • Publisher : CreateSpace
  • Release : 2014-04-28
  • ISBN : 9781481108836
  • Pages : 252 pages

Download or read book The False Anastasia written by Pierre Gilliard and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2014-04-28 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authors, Pierre Gilliard and Constantin Savitch have produced an excellent, incisive and detailed analytical account of Franziska Schanzkovski (aka Anna Anderson), a former Polish laborer who was used and misguided by a coterie of "friends" in an effort to gain control of the foreign investments of Tsar Nicholas II, particularly those in Germany. A prevalent rumor circulating at the time was that she was the illegitimate daughter of Tsar Nicholas II and Mathilde Kschessinska, the famous ballerina with whom he had a three-year romantic relationship prior to his marriage to Alexandra Feodorovna in 1894. The doctors who examined her after she made an unsuccessful suicide attempt in Berlin on 17 February 1920 stated that she appeared to have been born between 1892 and 1894. Moreover, Anna Anderson-who bore no physical, mental or emotional similiarity to Anastasia Nicholaievna Romanov-was none other than a mentally unbalanced unmarried woman who was gradually and delusively led to believe that she was really Anastasia Romanov. Yet, when found, she spoke only Polish and German. On the other hand, the real Anastasia did not speak these two languages, but did speak English, French and Russian very well. To paraphrase Disraeli, in his book, "Konigsby," the true identity and saga of the real Anastasia and her family is enmeshed in deep intrigue, which can never be imagined by someone who is not behind the scenes. The saga of the real Anastasia Nicolaievna began in Peterhof, Russia on 18 June 1901 and ended in Newport, Rhode Island on 31 January 1997. The other members of the family lived out their lives in relative seclusion and anonymity as a result of a secret codicil in the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk on 3 March 1918 that ended the war between Germany and Russia. This fact was also personally related by Lenin to Armand Hammer. Front cover photo: The Imperial Family, without the only son Alexei.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on intensive ethnographic work in Romania and India conducted over six years, this book traces the struggle for social justice in Roma and Adivasi communities. Throughout centuries of persecution and marginalization, the Roma and Adivasi have been viewed as both victims and fighters, as royals and paupers, beasts and gods, and lately have been challenging the political and social order by defying the status quo. Different from commonly held suppositions that assume most marginalized and mobile communities typically resist the state and engage in hostile acts to undermine its authority, Power on the Move shows how these groups are willing to become full members. By utilizing different means, such as protests, sit-ins and grass roots organizing, they aim to gain the attention of the state (national and international), hoping to reach inclusion and access social justice.

Book Modern Fantasies on Love versus Classical Romances

Download or read book Modern Fantasies on Love versus Classical Romances written by Ljuba Tarvi and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2023-07-14 with total page 463 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Viewed through the lens of physics, love conquers nothing is the conclusion reached when love patterns in romances are viewed through laws of quantum physics. In this book, based on the metaphor “Love/Text is Energy,” love in fiction is interpreted in the same way as subatomic particles are studied in quantum mechanics — by investigating traces of their clashes in giant colliders, i.e., as Marx’s ‘converted forms’ of the protagonists’ conscious and unconscious decisions and actions. The book introduces the Token Valence Method, which assumes that a word, like an elementary particle, is neither a particle nor a wave but rather a quantum state. The TVM has revealed three models of love patterns in fiction: adaptation (21st century), alienation (20th century), and imagination (1991-2021).

Book Secrets of a Marine s Wife

Download or read book Secrets of a Marine s Wife written by Shanna Hogan and published by St. Martin's Press. This book was released on 2019-02-26 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Secrets of a Marine's Wife, award-winning journalist and New York Times bestselling author Shanna Hogan tells the true story of a young Marine wife whose illicit affair ended in tragedy. In June 2014, 19-year-old Erin Corwin was living a quiet life in Twentynine Palms, California, expecting her first child with her husband, U.S. Marine Corporal Jon Corwin—until the day she drove off into the desert and never returned. As temperatures climbed into the hundreds, friends and family teamed up with local law enforcement in a grueling search of Joshua Tree National Park. Nearly two months after her disappearance, Corwin's body was found at the bottom of an abandoned mine shaft, a homemade garrote wrapped around her throat. Suspicions mounted within the tight-knit Marine community as residents questioned if the killer was one of their own. Fellow Marine Christopher Lee and his wife lived next door to the Corwins, and the two young couples had leaned on each other for support. But detectives soon discovered that Chris and Erin's relationship had developed into a whirlwind romance that consumed them both and called the paternity of Corwin's baby into question. Lee told investigators he'd been out hunting the day of Corwin's disappearance, but his claims of innocence soon began to crumble. And while Erin was researching baby names, Lee was reportedly searching the internet for ways to dispose of a human body. Through interviews, court records, and extensive research, bestselling true-crime author Shanna Hogan constructs a chilling story of betrayal, deception, and tragedy.
