The present book focuses on pronominal AR in Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) which is a crucially required task for many Natural Language Processing (NLP) applications, including but not limited to Machine Translation (MT). Current MT systems poorly handle anaphora resolution when working on Arabic-English translation or vice versa, given that anaphora resolution is one of the least studied issues in Arabic NLP due to the fact that AR requires many NLP morphological, semantic and syntactic tools and resources; many of which are not available for MSA. Motivated by the poor performance of current MT systems in terms of Arabic AR and the lack of sufficient NLP research on the issue, this book proposes a statistical, corpus-based approach to AR in MSA that successfully overcomes the major bottleneck of Arabic NLP, namely the lack of basic language processing tools and resources. Such an approach achieves a promising performance rate of 87.6% and sheds light on further future work which can significantly improve performance.

In the book Almahasees scrutinizes the capacity of the three systems in dealing with translation between English and Arabic in a large corpus taken from various domains, including the United Nation (UN), the World Health Organization (WHO), the Arab League, Petra News Agency reports, and two literary texts: The Old Man and the Sea and The Prophet. The evaluation covers holistic analysis to assess the output of the three systems in terms of Translation Automation User Society (TAUS) adequacy and fluency scales. To examine how frequent each type of anaphor is, a corpus of different hypertexts has been established and analysed with regard to anaphors. The most frequent type are non-finite clause anaphors - a type which has never been investigated so far. Therefore, the potential of non-finite clause anaphors are further explored with respect to anaphora resolution. Book excerpt: Setting out the historical national and religious characteristics of the Italians as they impact on the integration within the European Union, this study makes note of the two characteristics that have an adverse effect on Italian national identity: cleavages between north and south and the dominant role of family. It discusses how for Italians family loyalty is stronger than any other allegiance, including feelings towards their country, their nation, or the EU. Due to such subnational allegiances and values, this book notes that Italian civic society is weaker and engagement at the grass roots is less robust than one finds in other democracies, leaving politics in Italy largely in the hands of political parties. The work concludes by noting that EU membership, however, provides no magic bullet for Italy: it cannot change internal cleavages, the Italian worldview, and family values or the country’s mafia-dominated power matrix, and as a result, the underlying absence of fidelity to a shared polity—Italian or European—leave the country as ungovernable as ever.
