Book Japanese Syntax and Semantics

Download or read book Japanese Syntax and Semantics written by S.-Y. Kuroda and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 1. Two main themes connect the papers on Japanese syntax collected in this volume: movements of noun phrases and case marking, although each in turn relates to other issues in syntax and semantics. These two themes can be traced back to my 1965 MIT dissertation. The problem of the so-called topic marker wa is a perennial problem in Japanese linguistics. I devoted Chapter 2 of my dissertation to the problem of wa. My primary concern there was transformational genera tive syntax. I was interested in the light that Chomsky'S new theory could shed on the understanding of Japanese sentence structure. I generalized the problem of deriving wa-phrases to the problem of deriving phrases accompanied by the quantifier-like particles mo, demo, sae as well as wa. These particles, mo, demo and sae may roughly be equated with a/so, or something like it and even, respectively, and are grouped together with wa under the name of huku-zyosi as a subcategory of particles in Kokugogaku, Japanese scholarship on Japanese grammar. This taxonomy itself is a straightforward consequence of distributional analysis, and does not require the mechanisms of transformational grammar. My transformational analysis of wa, and by extension, that of the other huku zyosi, consisted in formally relating the function of the post-nominal use of wa to that of the post-predicative use by means of what I called an attachment transformation.

Book Handbook of Japanese Syntax

Download or read book Handbook of Japanese Syntax written by Masayoshi Shibatani and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2017-10-23 with total page 972 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Studies of Japanese syntax have played a central role in the long history of Japanese linguistics spanning more than 250 years in Japan and abroad. More recently, Japanese has been among the languages most intensely studied within modern linguistic theories such as Generative Grammar and Cognitive/Functional Linguistics over the past fifty years. This volume presents a comprehensive survey of Japanese syntax from these three research strands, namely studies based on the traditional research methods developed in Japan, those from broader functional perspectives, and those couched in the generative linguistics framework. The twenty-four studies contained in this volume are characterized by a detailed analysis of a grammatical phenomenon with broader implications to general linguistics, making the volume attractive to both specialists of Japanese and those interested in learning about the impact of Japanese syntax to the general study of language. Each chapter is authored by a leading authority on the topic. Broad issues covered include sentence types (declarative, imperative, etc.) and their interactions with grammatical verbal categories (modality, polarity, politeness, etc.), grammatical relations (topic, subject, etc.), transitivity, nominalizations, grammaticalization, word order (subject, scrambling, numeral quantifier, configurationality), case marking (ga/no conversion, morphology and syntax), modification (adjectives, relative clause), and structure and interpretation (modality, negation, prosody, ellipsis). Book Turn Taking in Japanese Conversation

Download or read book Turn Taking in Japanese Conversation written by Hiroko Tanaka and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2000-02-15 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the interpretation of grammar and turn-taking in Japanese talk-in-interaction from the perspective of conversation analysis. It pays special attention to the projectability patterns of turns in Japanese in comparison to English. Through qualitative and quantitative methods, it is shown that the postpositional grammatical structure and the predicate-final orientation in Japanese regularly result in a relatively delayed projectability of the possible point at which a current turn may become recognisably complete in comparison to English. Prior to such points, projectability is often limited to the progressive anticipation of small increments of talk. However, participants are able to achieve smooth speaker transitions with minimal gap or overlap through the use of specific grammatical and prosodic devices for marking possible points at which a transition may become relevant.

Book The Passive in Japanese

Download or read book The Passive in Japanese written by Tomoko Ishizuka and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2012-09-11 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes and analyzes the passive voice system in Japanese within the framework of generative grammar. By unifying different types of passives conventionally distinguished within the literature, the book advances a simple minimalist account where various passive characteristics emerge from the lexical properties of a single passive morpheme interacting with independently-supported syntactic principles and general properties of Japanese. The book both reevaluates numerous properties previously discussed within the literature and introduces interesting new data collected through experiments. This novel analysis also benefits from considering the important issue of interspeaker variability, in terms of grammaticality judgments and context requirements, and its implications for individual grammar. The book will be of interest not only to students and scholars working on passive constructions, but more generally to scholars working on generative grammar, experimental syntax, language acquisition, and sentence processing.

Book A Contrastive Study of Japanese and English Syntax

Download or read book A Contrastive Study of Japanese and English Syntax written by Yasuyo Nakagomi and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis is an attempt to analyze Japanese and English syntax and compare them using a trans formational approach. The study is concerned with the investigation of the differences and similarities of certain grammatical structures of Japanese and English. This thesis consists of four parts. Part I introduces the reason why a transformational technique is adopted, and the procedure as to how the technique could be applied to a contrastive analysis, and also presents one of the characteristic features of Japanese, i.e. the problem of style, for the benefit of the reader's understanding of this thesis. Part II is concerned with phrase structure the analysis of which is focused on the constituents of the basic sentences: the topics bo be discussed are the noun phrase, in Chapter 2, and the verb phrase, in Chapter 3 5 and a contrastive presentation of these phrases between the two languages will be attempted. Part III (namely Chapter 4) deals with the transforms: i.e. interrogatives, negative sentences, imperatives, and passive sentences, which may be derived from the basic sentences by the application of trans formational rules. The foregoing contrastive analysis of basic sentences and their constituents, and the discussion with regard to certain transforms of Japanese and English reveal several distinctive features of both languages. In conclusion. Part IV (Chapter 5) further discusses those problems that are not discussed in detail in the previous chapters but considered as significant: i.e. the problems of syntactic devices and of modification. This study has been made in hopes of predicting some problems for speakers of Japanese in learning English syntax. Therefore, several remarks on the problems that they might encounter will also be given.

Book Japanese Sentence Processing

Download or read book Japanese Sentence Processing written by Reiko Mazuka and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2013-05-13 with total page 363 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is a direct result of the International Symposium on Japanese Sentence Processing held at Duke University. The symposium provided the first opportunity for researchers in three disciplinary areas from both Japan and the United States to participate in a conference where they could discuss issues concerning Japanese syntactic processing. The goals of the symposium were three-fold: * to illuminate the mechanisms of Japanese sentence processing from the viewpoints of linguistics, psycholinguistics and computer science; * to synthesize findings about the mechanisms of Japanese sentence processing by researchers in these three fields in Japan and the United States; * to lay foundations for future interdisciplinary research in Japanese sentence processing, as well as international collaborations between researchers in Japan and the United States. The chapters in this volume have been written from the points of view of three different disciplines, with various immediate objectives -- from building usable speech understanding systems to investigating the nature of competence grammars for natural languages. All of the papers share the long term goal of understanding the nature of human language processing mechanisms. The book is concerned with two central issues -- the universality of language processing mechanisms, and the nature of the relation between the components of linguistic knowledge and language processing. This volume demonstrates that interdisciplinary research can be fruitful, and provides groundwork for further research in Japanese sentence processing.

Book Handbook of Japanese Lexicon and Word Formation

Download or read book Handbook of Japanese Lexicon and Word Formation written by Taro Kageyama and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2016-01-29 with total page 748 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents a comprehensive survey of the lexicon and word formation processes in contemporary Japanese, with particular emphasis on their typologically characteristic features and their interactions with syntax and semantics. Through contacts with a variety of languages over more than two thousand years of history, Japanese has developed a complex vocabulary system that is composed of four lexical strata: (i) native Japanese, (ii) mimetic, (iii) Sino-Japanese, and (iv) foreign (especially English). This hybrid composition of the lexicon, coupled with the agglutinative character of the language by which morphology is closely associated with syntax, gives rise to theoretically intriguing interactions with word formation processes that are not easily found with inflectional, isolate, or polysynthetic types of languages.

Book Usage based Approaches to Japanese Grammar

Download or read book Usage based Approaches to Japanese Grammar written by Kaori Kabata and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2014-06-15 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume brings together papers that take usage-based approaches to study the nature of human language, with a focus on the grammar of Japanese. The 12 chapters provide a rich array of data and methodologies, with topics ranging from phonology, modality, and grammatical morphemes, to sentential construction and discourse-level phenomena such as turn-taking, speech register, and language change. As a whole, they demonstrate that usage-based linguistics illuminates various phenomena in the language that could not have been well accounted for by resorting solely to a formal theory such as the Universal-Grammar-based approach. Reflecting theoretical, methodological, and technological advancements made in and outside the field of cognitive-functional linguistics in recent years, the papers contained in this volume, both individually and collectively, have significant implications towards linguistics in general and Japanese linguistics in particular, as we as Japanese language teaching.

Book The Oxford Handbook of Japanese Linguistics

Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of Japanese Linguistics written by Shigeru Miyagawa and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2008-11-03 with total page 576 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past twenty years or so, the work on Japanese within generative grammar has shifted from primarily using contemporary theory to describe Japanese to contributing directly to general theory, on top of producing extensive analyses of the language. The Oxford Handbook of Japanese Linguistics captures the excitement that comes from answering the question, "What can Japanese say about Universal Grammar?" Each of the eighteen chapters takes up a topic in syntax, morphology, acquisition, processing, phonology, or information structure, and, first of all, lays out the core data, followed by critical discussion of the various approaches found in the literature. Each chapter ends with a section on how the study of the particular phenomenon in Japanese contributes to our knowledge of general linguistic theory. This book will be useful to students and scholars of linguistics who are interested in the latest studies on one of the most extensively studied languages within generative grammar.

Book Formal Perspectives on Secondary Predication

Download or read book Formal Perspectives on Secondary Predication written by Marcel Den Dikken and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2024-07 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The topic of secondary predication has attracted much attention especially in the generative literature. The present volume distinguishes itself from previous volumes on this topic in that all chapters discuss current issues in the syntax and semantics of secondary predication in the languages of Europe (including the Indo-European languages English, Dutch, French, and Spanish, as well as Hungarian, a Finno-Ugric language) and the languages of Asia (including Japanese, Chinese, and Korean) from formal linguistic perspectives. This book brings to light important new results in and directions for research on secondary predication.
