Two main themes connect the papers on Japanese syntax collected in this volume: movements of noun phrases and case marking, although each in turn relates to other issues in syntax and semantics. These two themes can be traced back to my 1965 MIT dissertation. The problem of the so-called topic marker wa is a perennial problem in Japanese linguistics. I devoted Chapter 2 of my dissertation to the problem of wa. My primary concern there was transformational genera tive syntax. I was interested in the light that Chomsky'S new theory could shed on the understanding of Japanese sentence structure. I generalized the problem of deriving wa-phrases to the problem of deriving phrases accompanied by the quantifier-like particles mo, demo, sae as well as wa. These particles, mo, demo and sae may roughly be equated with a/so, or something like it and even, respectively, and are grouped together with wa under the name of huku-zyosi as a subcategory of particles in Kokugogaku, Japanese scholarship on Japanese grammar. This taxonomy itself is a straightforward consequence of distributional analysis, and does not require the mechanisms of transformational grammar. My transformational analysis of wa, and by extension, that of the other huku zyosi, consisted in formally relating the function of the post-nominal use of wa to that of the post-predicative use by means of what I called an attachment transformation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the interpretation of grammar and turn-taking in Japanese talk-in-interaction from the perspective of conversation analysis. It pays special attention to the projectability patterns of turns in Japanese in comparison to English. Through qualitative and quantitative methods, it is shown that the postpositional grammatical structure and the predicate-final orientation in Japanese regularly result in a relatively delayed projectability of the possible point at which a current turn may become recognisably complete in comparison to English. Prior to such points, projectability is often limited to the progressive anticipation of small increments of talk. However, participants are able to achieve smooth speaker transitions with minimal gap or overlap through the use of specific grammatical and prosodic devices for marking possible points at which a transition may become relevant.

The book both reevaluates numerous properties previously discussed within the literature and introduces interesting new data collected through experiments. This novel analysis also benefits from considering the important issue of interspeaker variability, in terms of grammaticality judgments and context requirements, and its implications for individual grammar. The study is concerned with the investigation of the differences and similarities of certain grammatical structures of Japanese and English. This thesis consists of four parts. Part I introduces the reason why a transformational technique is adopted, and the procedure as to how the technique could be applied to a contrastive analysis, and also presents one of the characteristic features of Japanese, i.e. the problem of style, for the benefit of the reader's understanding of this thesis. Part II is concerned with phrase structure the analysis of which is focused on the constituents of the basic sentences: the topics bo be discussed are the noun phrase, in Chapter 2, and the verb phrase, in Chapter 3 5 and a contrastive presentation of these phrases between the two languages will be attempted. Part III (namely Chapter 4) deals with the transforms: i.e. interrogatives, negative sentences, imperatives, and passive sentences, which may be derived from the basic sentences by the application of trans formational rules. The foregoing contrastive analysis of basic sentences and their constituents, and the discussion with regard to certain transforms of Japanese and English reveal several distinctive features of both languages. In conclusion. Part IV (Chapter 5) further discusses those problems that are not discussed in detail in the previous chapters but considered as significant: i.e. the problems of syntactic devices and of modification. This study has been made in hopes of predicting some problems for speakers of Japanese in learning English syntax. Therefore, several remarks on the problems that they might encounter will also be given.

All of the papers share the long term goal of understanding the nature of human language processing mechanisms.
