Book Defining Complex Interdisciplinary Societal Problems

Download or read book Defining Complex Interdisciplinary Societal Problems written by Dorien J. DeTombe and published by Thesis Publishers. This book was released on 1994 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Complex interdisciplinary societal problems include problems such as the fast growth of metropolitan cities in the developing countries, global environmental problems, the AIDS problem, but also problems of the transport of goods and persons, and the communication of data. In all these cases, knowledge and data are often missing, and there is uncertainty as to how the problem is going to develop. In addition, there are often many people and organizations involved. many of these problems are either ill or undefined. Before interventions can be suggested, the problem needs to be defined. This study is a fundamental theoretical approach towards a method for defining these problems: the COMPRAM method. COMPRAM stands for complex problem analyzing method. The method is based on the theory of complex interdisciplinary societal problems, systems theory, and chaos theory. The method supports a co-operative multi- disciplinary team that analyzes the problem. The analysis is assisted by a facilitator. Working on the basis of the theories cited above, the communication among the multi-disciplinary team is supported by a seven layer computer model in which the main phenomena involved in the problem are expresses in different midels, from a verbal description to a system dynamic computer model.

Book Handling Societal Complexity

Download or read book Handling Societal Complexity written by Dorien DeTombe and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-02-24 with total page 569 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This handbook for the Methodology of Societal Complexity describes the theoretical development of the field and lays the foundation for the application of the Compram Methodology in the context of addressing complex societal problems. As such, it offers a valuable resource for scientists, practitioners, politicians, master and PhD students in the fields of methodology, the social sciences, operational research, management and political science and for all others who are professionally involved in handling complex societal problems. These problems are the kind that fill the front page of quality newspapers; they have a huge impact on society, involve a variety of phenomena and actors, and are therefore difficult to handle. The structured Compram Methodology provides sound guidelines for handling real-life societal problems democratically, sustainably and transparently. Examples of the use of the Compram Methodology are provided in the domain of global safety with regard to healthcare, economics, climate change, terrorism, large city problems, large technological projects and floods. Complex societal problems must be treated as multi-disciplinary, multi-actor, multi-level and often as multi-continental issues. As such, they call for a multi-disciplinary and multi-actor approach that takes into account the emotional aspects of the problem and the problem handling process, including the micro, meso and macro level, which can be accomplished using the methods, models and tools from the field of the Methodology of Societal Complexity. The Compram Methodology improves the problem handling process and increases the quality of interventions and therefore the quality of life. Handling complex societal problems can reduce conflicts, save money and ultimately even save lives. Dorien J. DeTombe is an internationally recognized expert and founder of the Theory of the Methodology of Societal Complexity and the Compram Methodology.

Book The International Handbook of Social Impact Assessment

Download or read book The International Handbook of Social Impact Assessment written by H. A. Becker and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2003-01-01 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'This book provides a valuable addition to the Social Impact Assessment (SIA) literature. While the volume addresses several good examples of "how to" case studies it also firmly addresses the importance of the need for firm conceptual and theoretical guidelines for SIA practice. . . the volume is an excellent contribution to the SIA literature and I highly recommend it to both practitioner and researcher alike.' – Geoff Syme, Australasian Journal of Environmental Management 'An innovative collection which takes social impact assessment to the frontiers of environmental and social policy and citizen awareness. Unusually, this collection includes both sophisticated quantitative tools and equally important chapters on participation, stakeholder involvement and environmental mediation. A most valuable source book.' – Michael Redclift, King's College, London, UK Social Impact Assessment (SIA) is the process of analysing and managing the intended and unintended consequences on the human environment of planned interventions (policies, programmes, plans, projects) so as to bring about a more sustainable and equitable biophysical and human environment. This important Handbook presents an indispensable overview of the range of new methods and of the conceptual advances in SIA. Recent increased attention to social considerations has led to substantial development in the techniques useful to, and the thinking in, SIA. A distinguished group of contributors provides an up-to-date and comprehensive account of the cutting-edge in SIA development. This Handbook outlines a new understanding and definition of SIA and, as such, will be an invaluable reference tool for both practitioners and scholars at different levels working in the fields of SIA and environmental studies (including both impact assessment and management).

Book Transportation Security Against Terrorism

Download or read book Transportation Security Against Terrorism written by M. Tahmisoglu and published by IOS Press. This book was released on 2009-04-29 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Even a cursory review of the numerous hijacking, train and bus bombings can establish beyond doubt that transport systems are particularly vulnerable targets of terrorist attack. To confront and seek remedies for this problem the Transportation Security against Terrorism Advanced Research Workshop took place 05-06 May 2008 at the Merkez Officers’ Club conference venue in Ankara. Although the papers in this edition – which is an overview of the discussions held at the workshop – present diverse and interdisciplinary views, the need to better understand terrorism and its effects on transportation infrastructure emerges as a common view. Due to increased globalization transportation networks are becoming more and more accessible to a growing group of people, some with questionable intentions. Transportation systems are also becoming more and more interlinked with one another requiring fro states to cooperate both during crises and before emergency situations emerge. The editors hope that this book will lay the groundwork for a theoretical and practical understanding of the issues that surround transportation security against terrorism.

Book Scientific Knowledge and Its Social Problems

Download or read book Scientific Knowledge and Its Social Problems written by and published by Transaction Publishers. This book was released on with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Science is continually confronted by new and difficult social and ethical problems. Some of these problems have arisen from the transformation of the academic science of the prewar period into the industrialized science of the present. Traditional theories of science are now widely recognized as obsolete. In Scientific Knowledge and Its Social Problems (originally published in 1971), Jerome R. Ravetz analyzes the work of science as the creation and investigation of problems. He demonstrates the role of choice and value judgment, and the inevitability of error, in scientific research. Ravetz's new introductory essay is a masterful statement of how our understanding of science has evolved over the last two decades.

Download or read book Teaching Social Studies written by James Litle and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 1993-01-30 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Just as society has changed dramatically over the last century, so have the social sciences. This valuable reference chronicles the historical development of social studies as a discipline in elementary and secondary schools. It also assesses the current state of teaching and research in the social sciences and history at the pre-college level, and it charts new directions for the future of social studies in secondary and elementary schools. By tracing the historical development of social studies, the reference indicates how social studies has constantly been redefined to meet the changing needs and expectations of society. At the same time, the historical context provided by the authors sheds new light on the current state of social studies in the curriculum and the development of social studies in the future. The book begins with introductory chapters that overview themes and issues common to all areas of history and the social sciences. The chapters that follow summarize and assess the developments and trends of particular fields commonly thought to constitute social studies. The volume concludes with chapters on broad topics, including the place of religion in the social studies curriculum, the role of writing in history and the social sciences, and the professional training of social studies teachers. Each chapter begins with a section of reflections on the development of the discipline, followed by a section on current issues and trends, followed by a final section of projections for the future of the discipline. The result is a comprehensive overview of the past, present, and future of social studies in elementary and secondary schools and an indispensable reference for educators, historians, and social scientists.

Book What s Your Problem

Download or read book What s Your Problem written by Stuart Connor and published by Critical Publishing. This book was released on 2013-09-02 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This lively book provides an essential introduction to the critical analysis of social problems and the policy process. It argues that policy does not just have an impact of people’s lives, but that people can and should have an impact on policy. Rather than assuming that social policies reflect an inevitable response to pre-existing givens, the author adopts a more proactive position to show how a ‘problem’ is fabricated and how a particular response to a ‘problem’ is legitimated. He goes on to demonstrate how the struggle over the meaning and desirable response to a range of social issues continues to take place not only in Parliament, but across broadcast and print media and the numerous internet channels. The book provides students, practitioners and activists with a rationale for and means to read, write and perform policy analysis. Drawing on the notion of policy literacy, readers will be introduced to a range of resources to enable them to further develop the ability to both read (comprehend), write (create, design, produce) and perform (influence and shape) policies. The book is illustrated throughout with examples from historical and contemporary representations of social problems and local, national and global policy making and practice. Each section will make reference to a toolkit that tutors, student and activists can access to help inform their practice. Presented in an accessible format, the book demonstrates that making sense of social issues and the policy process, also means making sense of some of the fundamental questions, values and assumptions of how is / should society be organised and our own role in the shaping of society. In this way the book not only provides practical and critical insights into the policy process, but is also an intellectually challenging and stimulating read.

Book The Economics of Complex Spatial Systems

Download or read book The Economics of Complex Spatial Systems written by A. Reggiani and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1998-05-05 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book argues that complexity theory offers new departures for (spatial-) economic modelling. It offers a broad overview of recent advances in non-linear dynamics (catastrophe theory, chaos theory, evolutionary theory and so forth) and illustrates the relevance of this new paradigm on the basis of several illustrations in the area of space-economy. The empirical limitations - inherent in the use of non-linear dynamic systems approaches - are also addressed. Next, the application potential of biocomputing (in particular, neural networks and evolutionary algorithms) is stressed, while various empirical model results are presented. The book concludes with an agenda for further research.
