Book Analytical Prediction for Grain Burn Time and Burning Area Kinematics in a Solid Rocket Combustion Chamber

Download or read book Analytical Prediction for Grain Burn Time and Burning Area Kinematics in a Solid Rocket Combustion Chamber written by Oluleke Babayomi and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This chapter proposes the application of Newtonian particle mechanics for the derivation of predictive equations for burn time, burning and unburnt area propagation for the case of a core propellant grain. The grain is considered to be inhibited in a solid rocket combustion chamber subject to the assumption that the flame propagation speed is constant for the particular solid fuel formulation and formation chemistry in any direction. Here, intricacies surrounding reaction chemistry and kinetic mechanisms are not of interest at the moment. Meanwhile, the physics derives from the assumption of a regressive solid fuel pyrolysis in a cylindrical combustion chamber subject to any theoretical or empirical burn rate characterization law. Essential parametric variables are expressed in terms of the propellant geometrical configuration at any instantaneous time. Profiles from simulation studies revealed the effect of modulating variables on the burning propagation arising from the kinematics and ordinary differential equations models. In the meantime, this mathematical exercise explored the tendency for a tie between essential kernels and matching polynomial approximations. In the limiting cases, closed form expressions are couched in terms of the propellant grain geometrical parameters. Notably, for the fuel burn time, a good agreement is observed for the theoretical and experimental results.

Download or read book CFD Analysis of Solid Rocket Motors written by Krishna Pandey and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2015-03-17 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Determination of the grain geometry is an important and critical step in the design of solid propellant rocket motors. Because, the performance of the rocket is greatly effect by the burning surface area of the solid propellant. The performance prediction of the solid rocket motor can be achieved easily if the burn back steps of the grain are known. In this study, grain burn back analysis for 3-D star grain geometries was investigated. The method used was solid modeling (ANSYS(r) - DM, PRO-E and GAMBIT) of the propellant grain for predefined intervals of burn back. In this method, the initial grain geometry was modeled parametrically using ANSYS software. For every burn step, the parameters were adapted and the new grain geometry was modeled, for analysis three cases of grain geometries was considered during the combustion. By analyzing these geometries, burn area change of the grain geometry was obtained. Using this data and internal ballistic parameters, the performance of the solid propellant rocket motor in terms of motor pressure was achieved.

Book Study of Grain Burnback and Performance of Solid Rockets Motors

Download or read book Study of Grain Burnback and Performance of Solid Rockets Motors written by Arnau Pons Lorente and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This project presents the development of a numerical code aimed to perform the grain burnback analysis and predict the performance of a solid rocket motor. The Level Set Method (LSM) has been applied to calculate the grain burnback evolution of 2D and 3D grain configurations introduced by the user as an input. In addition, in order to implement the 3D grain burnback analysis, an innovative approach called Quasi-3D has been implemented towards reducing the computational time. The Quasi-3D approach consists of modeling the 3D grain surface through few 2D reference cross-sections, which are propagated using the LSM in 2D. Then, the 3D surface is reconstructed by interpolating the grain shape between the reference cross-sections. With respect to the internal ballistics simulation, 0D-unsteady and 1D quasisteady models found from the literature have been used. This way, the Matlab® code developed studies three different cases: 2D grain burnback and 0D unsteady flow, Quasi-3D grain burnback and 0D unsteady flow and Quasi-3D grain burnback and 1D quasi-steady flow. The results from 2D and Quasi-3D grain burnback and 0D unsteady flow tools have been compared against three reference cases, obtaining a high level of matching. The 1D quasi-steady flow model results are qualitative.

Book A Method for Obtaining Empirical Correlations for Predicting Crack Propagation in a Burning Solid Propellant Grain

Download or read book A Method for Obtaining Empirical Correlations for Predicting Crack Propagation in a Burning Solid Propellant Grain written by Jeffrey A. Nimis and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The importance of crack propagation in solid rocket motors is widely recognized. However, the processes of crack propagation and branching in burning solid propellants are not as yet well understood. These processes could be instrumental in creating large specific surface areas for burning causing rocket motor failure. Key factors influencing the crack combustion, propagation and branching process considered in the dimensional analysis include chamber pressurization rate, initial crack length, initial temperature, sample geometry, and mechanical and thermal properties of the solid propellant. Book Analytical Investigation of the Burning Mechanism of Solid Rocket Propellants

Download or read book Analytical Investigation of the Burning Mechanism of Solid Rocket Propellants written by T. P. Torda and published by . This book was released on 1962 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ultimate goal of the investigation is the evolution of a time-dependent theory for the erosive burning of solid rocket propellants. The approach taken involves the use of a fluid dynamic model for the combustion zone. Attention is confined to a laminar-flow, steady-state model with simplified reaction kinetics. However, the analysis is formulated so that subsequent inclusion of time variable phenomena and more sophisticated chemistry will present no essential difficulty, other than increased complexity.
