This book was released on 2004 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Solid propellant rocket motors are the most widely used propulsion systems for military applications that require high thrust to weight ratio for relatively short time intervals. Very wide range of magnitude and duration of the thrust can be obtained from solid propellant rocket motors by making some small changes at the design of the rocket motor. The most effective of these design criteria is the geometry of the solid propellant grain. So the most important step in designing the solid propellant rocket motor is determination of the geometry of the solid propellant grain. The performance prediction of the solid rocket motor can be achieved easily if the burnback steps of the rocket motor are known. In this study, grain burnback analysis for some 3-D grain geometries is investigated. The method used is solid modeling of the propellant grain for some predefined intervals of burnback. In this method, the initial grain geometry is modeled parametrically using commercial software. For every burn step, the parameters are adapted. So the new grain geometry for every burnback step is modeled. By analyzing these geometries, burn area change of the grain geometry is obtained. Using this data and internal ballistics parameters, the performance of the solid propellant rocket motor is achieved. To verify the outputs obtained from this study, rocket motor tests are performed. The results obtained from this study shows that, the procedure that was developed, can be successfully used for the preliminary design of a solid propellant rocket motor where a lot of different geometries are examined.

Book Study of Grain Burnback and Performance of Solid Rockets Motors

Download or read book Study of Grain Burnback and Performance of Solid Rockets Motors written by Arnau Pons Lorente and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This project presents the development of a numerical code aimed to perform the grain burnback analysis and predict the performance of a solid rocket motor. The Level Set Method (LSM) has been applied to calculate the grain burnback evolution of 2D and 3D grain configurations introduced by the user as an input. In addition, in order to implement the 3D grain burnback analysis, an innovative approach called Quasi-3D has been implemented towards reducing the computational time. The Quasi-3D approach consists of modeling the 3D grain surface through few 2D reference cross-sections, which are propagated using the LSM in 2D. Then, the 3D surface is reconstructed by interpolating the grain shape between the reference cross-sections. With respect to the internal ballistics simulation, 0D-unsteady and 1D quasisteady models found from the literature have been used. This way, the Matlab® code developed studies three different cases: 2D grain burnback and 0D unsteady flow, Quasi-3D grain burnback and 0D unsteady flow and Quasi-3D grain burnback and 1D quasi-steady flow. The results from 2D and Quasi-3D grain burnback and 0D unsteady flow tools have been compared against three reference cases, obtaining a high level of matching. The 1D quasi-steady flow model results are qualitative.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Determination of the grain geometry is an important and critical step in the design of solid propellant rocket motors. Because, the performance of the rocket is greatly effect by the burning surface area of the solid propellant. The performance prediction of the solid rocket motor can be achieved easily if the burn back steps of the grain are known. In this study, grain burn back analysis for 3-D star grain geometries was investigated. The method used was solid modeling (ANSYS(r) - DM, PRO-E and GAMBIT) of the propellant grain for predefined intervals of burn back. In this method, the initial grain geometry was modeled parametrically using ANSYS software. For every burn step, the parameters were adapted and the new grain geometry was modeled, for analysis three cases of grain geometries was considered during the combustion. By analyzing these geometries, burn area change of the grain geometry was obtained. Using this data and internal ballistic parameters, the performance of the solid propellant rocket motor in terms of motor pressure was achieved.

This book was released on 1988 with total page 21 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper begins with a brief discussion of the basic ground rules and overall considerations in solid rocket motor design. This discussion includes ballistic design considerations, grain features related to ballistic design and their purposes, primary factors which determine stress and strain levels, and design approaches for avoiding structural weak points. The major section of the paper deals with solid rocket motor propellant grain structural integrity assurance, including materials characterization, structural analysis, and structural capability verification. The topics addressed include viscoelastic material behavior and the requisite thermomechanical characterization testing and analysis approaches; failure criteria and the appropriate testing approaches; experimental structural methods, including in-situ stress and strain measurement technology; and service life considerations.

Download or read book An Analysis of the Stress Conditions that Could Develop in a Solid Fuel Rocket Motor written by W. F. Swinson and published by . This book was released on 1965 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The major objective of this project is to investigate the thermal stresses developed in models which simulate the forward end of a solid propellant rocket motor. The first approximation, made to partially simulate the configuration of the forward end of the propellant grain, consisted of a hollow cylinder bonded at one end to a flat plate. This essembly was subjected to a uniform temperature change. Both the theoretical and experimental stresses were determined for this configuration. Very little information was initially available concerning the material properties of the model material which was used. Therefore, material properties, were determined experimentally prior to the investigation of the stresses in the model. Exploratory investigations of various bonding techniques and model casting techniques were made. This was necessary because of the absence of available information in these areas. Both two and three dimensional photoelastic stress analyses were employed during the experimental investigations. A model more nearly simulating the forward end of the solid propellant grain was cast, and a three dimensional photoelastic stress analysis was made. A theoretical analysis using a high speed digital computer was also made. A preliminary investigation concerned with the use of strain gages embedded in the model, simulating the propellant grain, was made. (Author).
