Book Analysis of X 15 Landing Approach and Flare Characteristics Determined from the First 30 Flights

Download or read book Analysis of X 15 Landing Approach and Flare Characteristics Determined from the First 30 Flights written by GENE J. MATRANGA and published by . This book was released on 1961 with total page 1 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The approach and flare maneuvers for the first 30 flights of the X-15 airplane and the various control problems encountered are discussed. Depending on configuration, the peak lift-drag ratios from flight varied from 3.5 to 4.5 as compared with a predicted range of from 3.0 to 4.2. By employing overhead, spiral-type patterns beginning at altitudes as high as 40,000 ft, the pilots were consistently able to touch down within about + or - 1,000 ft of a designated point. A typical flare was initiated at a comfortable altitude of about 800 ft and an indicated airspeed of approximately 300 knots, which allowed a margin of excess speed. The flap and gear were extended when the flare was essentially completed, and an average touchdown was accomplished at a speed of about 185 knots indicated airspeed, an angle of attack of about 7 degrees and a rate of descent of about 4 fps. In general, the approach and landing characteristics were predicted with good accuracy in extensive preflight simulations. F-104 airplanes which simulated the X-15 landing characteristics were particularly valuable for pilot training. (Author).

Book Analysis of the Approach Flare and Landing Characteristics of the X 24A Lifting Body

Download or read book Analysis of the Approach Flare and Landing Characteristics of the X 24A Lifting Body written by and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 127 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The approach and flare were flown with clean configurations (landing gear up), having maximum lift-to-drag ratios (L/D)'s between 2.95 and 4.30. The landing configuraton (gear down) had a maximum L/D of 2.65. The landing approach pattern was a 180-degree, unpowered, left-hand, circling approach followed by a short wings-level, high energy final approach at airspeeds ranging from 267 to 318 KCAS, terminating with a flare to near level flight near the ground, and a deceleration to landing. The landing gear was extended near completion of flare in close proximity to the ground. The landings were at airspeeds between 168 and 205 KCAS at sink rates of less than 5 feet per second and within 2,000 feet of the intended landing point. An effective speed brake function was generated on the X-24A by using the flap bias feature. This was essential to the accomplishment of accurate landings. Visibility and handling qualities of the X- 24A in the final approach and landing configuration were excellent; however, lateral upsets in turbulence were disconcerting, especially near the ground.

Book Optimization of Lifting Re entry Vehicles

Download or read book Optimization of Lifting Re entry Vehicles written by Wilbur Leason Hankey and published by . This book was released on 1963 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aerodynamic lift is used during re-entry to provide range maneuverability so that a precise site can be selected and a horizontal landing capability can be provided. Maximum maneuverability may be achieved by modulating the hypersonic lift-to drag ratio (L/D). In this study the lifting re entry configuration was optimized to maximize hypersonic L/D within the heating, stability, and landing constraints. Eleven pertinent constraint equations were formulated, and numerical calcula tions of the complete aerodynamic characteristics and configurational geometry were determined. The IBM 7090 computer was used to solve the 11 constraint equations through an iteration tech nique and to perform the maximization process. Optimum configurational geometries were evaluated for three wing loadings at vehicle weights of 10,000 and 100,000 pounds. Results show that higher L/D values can be achieved with low aspect ratio, low wing loadings, and large scale vehi cles. The complete geometry for one of the typical optimums is shown as an example.
