Book Analysis of Trends in Residential Energy Consumption

Download or read book Analysis of Trends in Residential Energy Consumption written by GENERAL ACCOUNTING OFFICE WASHINGTON DC ENERGY AND MINERALS DIV. and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study is to analyze the underlying trends in U.S. residential energy use in terms of the physical factors which determine that use. The study estimates future consumption mainly on the basis of maintaining current levels of service, with some additional services included, to the extent that recent trends suggest they are likely to be demanded. It intentionally does not include the effects of consumers choosing, or being forced, to accept lower levels of energy services, whether spoken of as 'life-style changes' or 'freezing in the dark.' To the extent that there are reductions in the levels of energy services used by consumers, actual residential energy consumption could be lower than estimated here. This possibility is discussed further in the final chapter. By understanding the trends in the physical factors, we were able to combine them to suggest what currently appears to be the most likely course of future U.S. residential energy use. (Author).

Book Energy Demand Facts and Trends

Download or read book Energy Demand Facts and Trends written by B. Chateau and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fIrst oil crisis of 1973-74 and the questions it raised in the economic and social fIelds drew attention to energy issues. Industrial societies, accustomed for two decades or more to energy sufficiently easy to produce and cheap to consume that it was thought to be inexhaustible, began to question their energy future. The studies undertaken at that time, and since, on a national, regional, or world level were over-optimistic. The problem seemed simple enough to solve. On the one hand, a certain number of resources: coal, the abundance of which was discovered, or rather rediscovered oil, source of all the problems ... In fact, the problems seemed to come, if not from oil itself (an easy explanation), then from those who produced it without really owning it, and from those who owned it without really control ling it natural gas, second only to oil and less compromised uranium, all of whose promises had not been kept, but whose resources were not in question solar energy, multiform and really inexhaustible thermonuclear fusion, and geothermal energy, etc. On the other hand, energy consumption, though excessive perhaps, was symbolic of progress, development, and increased well being. The originality of the energy policies set up since 1974 lies in the fact they no longer aimed to produce (or import) more, but to consume less. They sought, and still seek, what might be emphatically called the control of energy consump tion, or rather the control of energy demand.

Book Trends in Energy Use in Industrial Societies

Download or read book Trends in Energy Use in Industrial Societies written by Joy Dunkerley and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-22 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Taken from a report for the Electric Power Research Institute, Joy Dunkerley’s study aims to clarify the relationship between energy consumption and economic output in industrialised countries. Originally published in 1980 and using data from 1972, this study uses cross-country comparisons of energy use to stress the importance of new supply options and measures of controlling energy use without affecting living standards whilst also discussing the impact of energy prices and economic growth in the countries studied. This title will be of interest to students of environmental studies.

Book The Determinants and Trends in the Household Energy Consumption for Different End Uses in the United States During 2001 2009

Download or read book The Determinants and Trends in the Household Energy Consumption for Different End Uses in the United States During 2001 2009 written by Sadasivan Karuppusamy and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The focus of this study is a broad examination of household energy consumption for appliance use, space heating, space cooling, and water heating in United States over the period 2001-2009 using Residential Energy Consumption Survey (RECS) from the years 2001 and 2009. Methods: Linear Regression Analysis is used to identfy determinants of household energy consumption for each of the end uses. Regression based decomposition analysis is used to identify trends in residential energy consumption for each of the end uses. Results: The study identified current determinants of household energy consumption for each of the end uses. These determinants are employed in the study to predict trends in household energy consumption for each of the end uses. Based on the results policy interventions at local and federal level for energy conservation are suggested.

Book excerpt: In this report, tests of statistical significance of five sets of variables with household energy consumption (at the point of end-use) are described. Five models, in sequence, were empirically estimated and tested for statistical significance by using the Residential Energy Consumption Survey of the US Department of Energy, Energy Information Administration. Each model incorporated additional information, embodied in a set of variables not previously specified in the energy demand system. The variable sets were generally labeled as economic variables, weather variables, household-structure variables, end-use variables, and housing-type variables. The tests of statistical significance showed each of the variable sets to be highly significant in explaining the overall variance in energy consumption. The findings imply that the contemporaneous interaction of different types of variables, and not just one exclusive set of variables, determines the level of household energy consumption.
