Book Error Analysis

Download or read book Error Analysis written by Bernd Spillner and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 1991-04-12 with total page 598 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Errors are information. In contrastive linguistics, they are thought to be caused by unconscious transfer of mother tongue structures to the system of the target language and give information about both systems. In the interlanguage hypothesis of second language acquisition, errors are indicative of the different intermediate learning levels and are useful pedagogical feedback. In both cases error analysis is an essential methodological tool for diagnosis and evaluation of the language acquisition process. Errors, too, give information in psychoanalysis (e.g., the Freudian slip), in language universal research, and in other fields of linguistics, such as linguistic change. This bibliography is intended to stimulate study into cross-language, cross-discipline and cross-theoretical, as well as for language universal, use of the numerous, but sometimes hard to come by, error analysis studies. 5398 titles covering the period 1578 up to 1990 (with work in more than 144 languages and language families) are cited, cross-referenced, and described. The subject areas covered are numerous. For example: Theoretical Linguistics (Linguistic Typology, Cognitive Linguistics), Historical Linguistics (Language Change), Applied Linguistics (e.g. Speech Disorders), Translation, Mother Tongue Acquisition, Foreign Language Learning (Negative Transfer, Intralingual and Interlingual Errors), Psychoanalysis (Slips of the Tongue), Typography, Shorthand, Clinical Linguistics and Speech Pathology, Reading Research, Automatic Error Detection, Contact Linguistics (Code-switching, Interference), etc.

Book 50 Mistakes Made by Japanese Learners of English

Download or read book 50 Mistakes Made by Japanese Learners of English written by Paul Raine and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2018-08-06 with total page 119 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the rise in the popularity of Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) since the 1960s has directed attention away from accuracy and onto fluency and meaning, most Japanese learners of English still expect to receive corrections on both their written and spoken output. Due largely to interference from Japanese language and culture, as well as over-generalization of English grammatical rules, Japanese learners of English tend to make the same kinds of mistakes over and over again. This taxonomy of the most common and persistent mistakes is therefore offered as a useful timesaving tool, as well as a more targeted treatment than most general grammar books. This list of 50 mistakes is based on the author's experience of over 10 years teaching English in both conversation schools and institutes of higher education in Japan. Note that not all the sentences are technically "grammatically" incorrect, but rather relate to "unnatural" uses of English according to the author's intuition. Proponents of English as a Lingua Franca (ELF) tend to argue that native speakers no longer have ownership of the English language, and that the norms they espouse should be disregarded in favor of non-native speaker norms. The author is inclined to agree with the former sentiment (global ownership of English) more than the latter (disregarding the norms of native speakers). In the absence of a standard global variety of non-native speaker English, native speaker norms are still the best thing we have. Further objections to this kind of book on common mistakes might be raised by descriptive grammarians, who deem the way language is actually used (usually by native speakers) to be the final authority on what is acceptable. While descriptivists tend to dismiss the importance of grammar rules, prescriptivists are usually strongly in favor of applying them, especially in academic contexts. While both sides of this debate have something to offer, it is often more helpful to be a pragmatist. We should acknowledge the fact that gatekeepers (exam markers, journal vetters, book editors, teachers, etc) will ordinarily enforce commonly accepted linguistic standards, and it doesn't help learners of English as a Foreign Language to be told that there are no such standards, or that their own variety of English should be considered correct. This book is therefore offered to both teachers and learners of EFL in Japan as a pragmatic tool to help learners understand and avoid the most common mistakes and unnatural uses of English.

This book was released on 2016-01-15 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This innovative and original volume brings together studies that apply cognitive and functional linguistics to the study of the L2 acquisition of Japanese. With each article grounded on the usage-based model and/or conceptual notions such as foregrounding and subjectivity, the volume sheds light on how cognitive and functional linguistics can help us understand aspects of Japanese acquisition that have been neglected by traditionalists.

Book An Analysis of Japanese Learners Comprehension of Intonation in English

Download or read book An Analysis of Japanese Learners Comprehension of Intonation in English written by Misako Okubo and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Typically, most native speakers of Japanese, who have been taught English in Japan, have had limited exposure to prosodic features of English. Consequently, their ability to understand the meaning of different intonation patterns is limited as well. Though it is generally accepted that intonation plays a crucial role in English communication, comprehensive pedagogical materials for teaching English intonation to native speakers of Japanese are not widely available or used in Japan. This is, in part, due to the complexity of English prosodic features and their abstractness. A better understanding of these barriers requires that the extent and the nature of native speakers of Japanese' understanding of English intonation be explored. The scope of this study is restricted to the examination of the following questions: (1) How well, compared with native speakers of English, can Japanese adult learners comprehend intonation patterns of English? (2) Are there any patterns in their misinterpretations of test sentences, according to three types of errors: paraphrase, categorization, or attitudinal judgments? (3) Can Japanese learners who comprehend one variation of intonation also interpret correctly the same sentence with the contrastive variation of intonation? Seventy-four native speakers of Japanese and thirty-one native speakers of English (control group) listened to twenty pairs of sentences presented with contrastive intonation. For each sentence they were asked to choose one of three different interpretations. Their responses were evaluated, at a 0.05 level of significance, using statistical tests of hypothesis (t and chi-square), and measures of correlation (r, phi and Cramers' s V). Major findings of this study are (1) the Japanese students had more difficulty with comprehending English intonation than the American students; (2) the Japanese students seemed to lack know ledge of grammar-intonation relationships; (3) they were able to understand attitudinal judgment intonation as well as native speakers.
