Book Analysis of Rotorwash Effects in Helicopter Mishaps

Download or read book Analysis of Rotorwash Effects in Helicopter Mishaps written by Samuel W. Ferguson and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 59 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A selected number of rotorwash related helicopter mishaps have been reviewed and analyzed. This analysis attempts to determine threshold levels of rotorwash velocity that result in potential hazards. Due to a lack of detailed mishap information being available, critical threshold values of velocity could not be conclusively identified. However, critical ranges of combined rotorwash and ambient wind velocity were identified for several types of investigated mishaps. These ranges of peak velocity generally occur between approximately 30 and 40 knots. Recommendations are provided for improvement of the rotorwash mishap reporting system and for the acquisition of experimentally obtained data which will significantly aid any future rotorwash related mishap analysis efforts.

Book A Method for Assessing the Impact of Wake Vortices of USAF Operations

Download or read book A Method for Assessing the Impact of Wake Vortices of USAF Operations written by George Kurylowich and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experience as a consultant to the Safety Office at Norton AFB led to compiling the engineering tools presented so that this report can be used by engineering personnel to investigate future incidents/accidents and existing USAF operations that are impacted by the vortical wake hazard. The approach presented is amenable to easy hand computations. Mixed airplane/helicopter operations can be assessed, since the engineering tools to determine the location and strength of the rotor downwash field behind a helicopter are presented. Finally, a simplified mathematical model is given to represent this hazard for use in USAF simulators, to make pilots aware of the problems associated with operating in wake-contaminated airspace.

Book An Investigation of the Effect of Downwash from a VTOL Aircraft and a Helicopter in the Ground Environment

Download or read book An Investigation of the Effect of Downwash from a VTOL Aircraft and a Helicopter in the Ground Environment written by Thomas C. O'Bryan and published by . This book was released on 1961 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dynamic-pressure measurement, in ground effect , have been obtained about a single-rotor helicopter and a dual-propeller VTOL aircraft. The results indicate that the slipstream dynamic pressure along the ground, some distance from the center of rotation, is not a function of disk loading but merely a function of the gross weight or thrust of the aircraft. Furthermore, for a given gross weight the thickness of this is out-ward flowing sheet of air is less for a small-diameter propeller (higher disk loading propeller).

Book Rotorwash Analysis Handbook Volume 2 Appendixes

Download or read book Rotorwash Analysis Handbook Volume 2 Appendixes written by Samuel W. Ferguson and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Documentation, a program listing, and a user's guide are provided for version 2.1 of the FORTRAN 77-based ROTWASH computer program in report appendices. An extensive bibliography of rotorwash related technical documents is also provided. This listing is subdivided into different rotorwash topics. A companion report, entitled Evaluation of Rotorwash Characterisitics for Tiltrotor and Tiltwing Aircraft in Hovering Flight, DOT/FAA. RD-90/16, evaluates rotorwash characteristics of 11 different types of tiltrotor and tiltwing aircraft for comparison purposes. Another companion report, entitiled Analysis of Rotorwash Effects in Helicopter Mishaps, DOT/FAA/RD-90/17, presents an analysis of several of the more common types of rotorwash related helicopter mishaps. Much of the information provided in this second companion report is updated by this report. A third report, DOT/FAA/RD-90/25, Rotorwash Computer Model - User's Guide, is replaced by this more comprehensive report and its updated version of the ROTWASH computer program.

Book Rotorcraft Crash Mishap Analysis

Download or read book Rotorcraft Crash Mishap Analysis written by Lance C. Labun and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The method and results of a study using rotary wing crash data from the Army Aviation Mishap database are reported. The study was conducted to support the Full Spectrum Crashworthiness initiative with the objective of providing a current basis for revising the crashworthiness design criteria. For this study, crashes were divided into two types: directly to terrain, and those following an inflight obstacle strike. Thirty percent of the crashes studied were post-obstacle crashes and this fraction appears to be higher for the newer generation aircraft. The two crash types differ in both kinematics and outcomes. The post-obstacle crashes were characterized by higher vertical velocities, more vertical impact angles, and a broader distribution of attitude angles. The post-obstacle crashes analyzed were less survivable and more injurious. Data on the impact surface revealed that 16 percent of all crashes occurred onto prepared surfaces, whereas 66 percent occurred onto sod. Crashworthiness was evaluated by estimating the velocity above which all aircraft occupants experienced severe injury. A recommendation is made to reconsider crashworthiness strategies that are functional only for aircraft impacting vertically and close to the normal flight attitude."--Report documentation page.
