This book was released on 1993 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The application of elastic theory to the design of overlays on existing pavement requires that a modulus of elasticity be assigned to the existing structural system. Estimates of elastic modulus are obtained from dynamic deflection reading in the field; but asphalt is a highly temperature-sensitive visco-elastic material and deflections not corrected to a standard temperature can produce misleading results. It is therefore the objective of the present study to develop a procedure for estimating an effective modulus of elasticity for a layer of asphaltic concrete in which some temperature gradient exists because of the combined influences of solar radiation, wind, air temperature, cloud cover and other variables specific to time and location which cause temperature variation within the pavement layer. Two models are presented from the achievement of that objective.

Book Temperature Predictions and Adjustment Factors for Asphalt Pavement

Download or read book Temperature Predictions and Adjustment Factors for Asphalt Pavement written by Erland O. Lukanen and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents the results of an analysis of the response that deflections and backcalculated asphalt moduli have to the pavement temperature. The study used deflection and temperature data from 40 sites monitored in the Seasonal Monitoring Program of the Long Term Pavement Performance (LTPP) program. The report presents improved methods of estimating the temperature within an asphalt pavement based on the measurement procedures used for the LTPP program. The data necessary to estimate the temperature within the asphalt included the surface temperature, time of day, depth below the surface, and the average air temperature from the previous day.

Book Impacts of Tires and Axle Configurations on Perpetual Pavement Response

Download or read book Impacts of Tires and Axle Configurations on Perpetual Pavement Response written by Derar Mohammad Hamed Tarawneh and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Perpetual pavement can be defined as a flexible pavement that lasts longer than 50 years by maintaining strain at the bottom of the Asphalt Concrete (AC) layer below a specified threshold called fatigue endurance limit. This goal can be achieved by designing a proper pavement thickness and underlying layers that resist pavement distresses. In this research, U.S. route 23 project in Delaware County, Ohio, was considered, which is one of the Strategic Highway Research Test roads (SHRP). This study aims to optimize the thickness of pavement layers to achieve the acceptance criterion of perpetual pavements in Ohio. A three-dimensional viscoelastic finite element model was developed to simulate perpetual pavement response under a different truck and tire configurations, pavement temperature, AC layer thicknesses, soil stabilization, traffic speed and tire pressures. The viscoelastic model was calibrated and validated using field-measured pavement responses using dynamic instrumentation gages embedded in the pavement layers during construction. The viscoelastic behavior of asphalt material was determined by following interconversion procedures using dynamic modulus test results to estimate Prony series where 9 terms of Prony series were used. The results showed that the developed viscoelastic model accurately captures and predicts pavement response in comparison to measured values. Six cases of thickness variation incorporated with five cases of temperature variation with and without subgrade stabilization were studied to optimize the thickness of perpetual pavement under loading and environmental conditions. The results showed that changing the AC base thickness has a higher impact on reducing tensile strain at the bottom of the AC layer despite changing aggregate base thickness due to stiffness difference. In addition, utilizing stabilized subgrade allows thinner pavement design by reducing tensile strain at the bottom of AC layer and confining stresses at the top layers. All analyses showed that a pavement section with 13 in (33 cm) AC thickness incorporated with 18 in (45.7 cm) stabilized subgrade behaved perpetually under all traffic loading and environmental conditions. Therefore, 13 in (33 cm) section is considered as the optimum perpetual pavement thickness. Two trucks were used in this study: a single axle truck with wide base tiers and a tandem axle truck with conventional dual tires. The analysis showed that single axle truck with wide-base tires exerted higher strain and, therefore, greater damage than tandem axle truck with dual tires. Furthermore, truck speed has a high impact on pavement response where at a lower speed, higher tensile strain was recorded compared to the higher speed. However, no clear trend was found on the impact of tire pressure on pavement response. Finally, the impact of short gaps between trucks in truck platooning in perpetual pavement fatigue life was investigated. Four different distances were used: 10 ft. (3m), 20 ft. (6m), 33 ft. (10 m) and 50 ft. (15 m) and tensile strain at the bottom of AC later was recorded. The results showed that the shorter the truck spacing, the lower the fatigue life, where increasing the spacing from 10 ft. (3 m) to 20 ft. (6m) increased the fatigue life by 38 %. Accordingly, the perpetual pavement section with optimized thickness can be considered a platoonable section when truck spacing reaches 33 ft. (10 m) or more.
