Blood supply, epidermal thickness, and pigments, both intrinsic and extrinsic, are responsible for the many variations we see. An important factor is the amount of the intrinsic pigment melanin, which absorbs and scatters ultraviolet radiation. In recent studies of the morphology of surface skin cells and their melanin content, we noticed a clear correlation between gross skin color and the average number of melanin granules per cell. This suggested that a quantitative analysis of melanin granules in skin cells from microscopic skin specimens, such as those present on clothing, could help to determine the skin color of the individual from which the cells came. This paper describes the methods of cell collection and staining followed and summarizes the results of the quantitative studies.

For example, the initial events of adh«sion of fungal spores to the exposed surface tissues of the host are essential for subsequent invasion of the plant or animal and establishment of pathogenesis. A point of consensus among investigators who have directed their attention to such events in plants, insects, and vertebrates isthat spore adhesion to the host cuticle or epithelium is more than a simple binding event. lt is a complex and potentially pivotal process in fungal-plant interactions which "may involve the secretion of ftuids that prepare the infection court for the development of morphological stages of the germling" and subsequent invasion of the host (Nicholson and Epstein, Chapter 1). The attachment of the fungal propagule to the arthropod cuticle is also "mediated by the chemical components present on the outer layer of the spore wall and the epicuticle . . . . Initial attachment may be reinforced further by either the active secretion of adhesive materials or the modification of spore wall materiallocated at the [fungal spore arthropod] cuticle interface (Boucias and Pendland, Chapter 5).

These pigments have diverse biological functions, including photoprotection, thermoregulation, antioxidation, virulence, and metal ion sequestration. Melanins have physicochemical properties that have proven useful in the optical, electronic, material, agriculture, cosmetic, pharmaceutical, and medical industries. The chapters in this book provide an in-depth analysis of the current issues and challenges in this field. Topics covered include the properties, biogenesis, and evolution of melanosomes. The book also addresses the synthesis and industrial production of melanins by microorganisms. The metabolic pathways for the synthesis of several types of polymeric pigments in microorganisms and their role in pathogenesis are reviewed. Book excerpt: The studies of free radicals in melanin and the human melanoma malignum cells by an X-band (9.3 GHz) electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy were presented. The original results were compared with those published earlier. The aim of this work was application of the advanced spectral analysis to determine free radical properties in melanin biopolymers obtained from different melanotic tumor cells and free radicals existing in the human melanoma cells. Magnetic spin-lattice interactions in melanin samples were tested. The evolution of lineshape of tumor cells with increasing of microwave power was determined to confirm their complex free radical system. The useful shape parameters were proposed. The shape of melanotic tumor cells was analyzed. EPR spectra of free radicals in the melanin isolated from different tumor cells measured in the wide range of microwave power were analyzed. The melanins were obtained from the control tumor cells and the cells cultured with the several antitumor substances. The usefulness of the electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy was confirmed.
