Book Finite Element Analysis of Geared Shaft Assemblies and Thin rimmed Gears

Download or read book Finite Element Analysis of Geared Shaft Assemblies and Thin rimmed Gears written by David Christopher Talbot and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: This thesis presents analysis of shafted gear trains and gear blanks using the finite element method. First, a lumped-parameter type finite element model is presented for the static and dynamic analysis of geared shaft assemblies. Second, two finite element models are introduced to model the gear itself. One model computes the compliance of the gear due to tooth loading, and the other provides a stress prediction for the gear under known loading conditions. Both models are highly specialized, and speed of computation is of utmost importance.

Book Failure Analysis of Shaft with Step and Key way Discontinuities under Combined Loading

This book was released on 2018-05-30 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This E-book is a master's dissertation on ‘Failure Analysis of Shaft with Step and Keyway Discontinuities Under Combined Loading ' submitted in May, 2018. In all power transmission elements shaft is almost use in every machine or in every mechanical system. Shaft is a rotating machine element, commonly in circular cross-section, is used to transmit power and rotational motion to other parts such as gears, pulleys, flywheels sprockets and clutches. Various elements, which are used to transmit power from the driving device (motor or engine) are mounted on the shaft with the help of keys. Design of shaft is very important part in mechanical design. In real life, the shaft is subjected to combined loading. A shaft often fails due to the stress concentration in discontinuities areas resulting into large stress values. The most common discontinuities present in the shafts are grooves, slots, shoulders, fillets, holes, thread, etc. Due to presence of these geometrical discontinuities, the stresses are concentrated in discontinuities areas thereby reducing its strength. In the present work, an effort is made to calculate the equivalent stresses and maximum shear stresses developed in shaft due to step and presence of keyways (either single or multiple). These stresses are determined analytically and using finite element analysis (FEA) subjected to combined loading. The modelling of shaft with single keyway (rectangular, square, tapered, semi-circular) is carried out using CREO software and FEA is carried out in ANSYS. Further, the stresses are also determined for shaft with double keyways (rectangular, semi-circular) and stepped shaft with single and double rectangular keyways. Symmetrical and non-symmetrical orientations of double keyways in shaft, is also modelled and analysed. It is concluded that rectangular keyway in solid shaft is best among all the modelled and analyzed keyway in shaft as far as the concern of equivalent and shear stresses and in case of both rectangular and semi-circular keyways, double symmetrical keyways in solid shaft is more suitable than non-symmetrical keyways under combined loading conditions. It is also concluded that double symmetrical keyways in stepped shaft is more suitable than non-symmetrical keyway under combined loading conditions due to less generation of stresses.

Book Dynamic Analysis of Hollow Tapered Isotropic and Composite Shafts Using Finite Element Techniques

Download or read book Dynamic Analysis of Hollow Tapered Isotropic and Composite Shafts Using Finite Element Techniques written by Lindsay LaRocca Parslow and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Finite element techniques were used to analyze the dynamic characteristics of hollow tapered isotropic and composite shafts. Mathematical models of hollow tapered isotropic and composite shafts were developed, which were then discretized using Galerkin's Method to produce standard vibration equations. The solutions to the standard vibration equations were coded into two computer programs, which can be used to calculate the torsional dynamic characteristics of an isotropic rotor system, and the coupled axial-torsional dynamic characteristics of a composite shaft. Several examples using each computer program are presented, illustrating their ability to predict natural frequencies and mode shapes of torsional systems"--Abstract.

Book Finite Element Analysis of Spur Gear Set

Download or read book Finite Element Analysis of Spur Gear Set written by Venkata Satya Naga Karthik Bommisetty and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Finite Element procedure has been developed in this work to determine the load distribution factor, Km, of the AGMA formula for a set of spur gear. At first, a spur gear with perfect involute is modeled using a 3-D CAD software. The model is them is assembled with shafts having 1, 2, and 3 degree misalignments. The generated 3-D models were in turn imported to ANSYS workbench to calculate the maximum bending and contact stresses using finite element method. The results generated were then compared with the maximum bending stress results obtained for parallel shafts to estimate the Load Distribution Factor Km. This study resulted in Km values of 1.03,1.11, and 1.14.

Book excerpt: This book explores the geometric and kinematic design of the various types of gears most commonly used in practical applications, also considering the problems concerning their cutting processes. The cylindrical spur and helical gears are first considered, determining their main geometric quantities in the light of interference and undercut problems, as well as the related kinematic parameters. Particular attention is paid to the profile shift of these types of gears either generated by rack-type cutter or by pinion-rack cutter. Among other things, profile-shifted toothing allows to obtain teeth shapes capable of greater strength and more balanced specific sliding, as well as to reduce the number of teeth below the minimum one to avoid the operating interference or undercut. These very important aspects of geometric-kinematic design of cylindrical spur and helical gears are then generalized and extended to the other examined types of gears most commonly used in practical applications, such as straight bevel gears; crossed helical gears; worm gears; spiral bevel and hypoid gears. Finally, ordinary gear trains, planetary gear trains and face gear drives are discussed. This is the most advanced reference guide to the state of the art in gear engineering. Topics are addressed from a theoretical standpoint, but in such a way as not to lose sight of the physical phenomena that characterize the various types of gears which are examined. The analytical and numerical solutions are formulated so as to be of interest not only to academics, but also to designers who deal with actual engineering problems concerning the gears

Book Failure of Drive Shaft Using Finite Element Analysis

Download or read book Failure of Drive Shaft Using Finite Element Analysis written by Mohd Zulhilmi Md Yusof and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 45 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This project presented about a failure of drive shaft in conventional passenger vehicles. Perodua Kancil front wheel drive shaft was chosen as the specimen of this analysis. This project deals with analysis on stress using finite element method. The solid model of the drive shaft need to be constructs using SOLIDWORK software. The type of material used in the drive shaft need to be known first before stress analysis can be performed using Patran-Nastran software. The known material will provide the information such as density, modulus of elasticity and tensile strength required for the software to perform the stress and failure analysis. Spectroscopic analysis is carried out using FOUNDRY-MASTER UV instrument. The load applied at the ends of the shaft that are lateral bending load of 1/4 of weight of the full car. Boundary conditions are applied at the bearing and geared location. The highest stress at and displacement was predicted occurred at the fillet cross section location. Stresses will concentrate in the smaller diameter portion due to change in shaft diameter as they pass from large to the small diameter. In any case, one must determine the cause of failure and predict the fatigue life to prevent future occurrence and to improve the performance of the device, component or structure.
