Book excerpt: This report summarizes the work carried out under LLNL Contract Number B108527, subcontracted by the Regents of the University of California at Berkeley. The research carried out under this contract includes assisting in the data analysis for the Prognoz-9 mission, linking results of the computer codes to the Prognoz-9 data library in order to study the spectral shape and evolution of cosmic gamma-ray burst energy spectra, and using the results of this study to help to determine or constrain the physical conditions at the gamma-ray bursts sources. The results of this work led to several publications that have shed considerable insight into the gamma-ray burst mystery, and gives a new diagnostic for determining the nature of gamma-ray burst sources. The outcome of this work also provides a new spectral form for studying the temporal evolution and spectral behavior of gamma-ray bursts.

Book excerpt: Motivated by the recent developments in the cyclotron resonance upscattering of soft photons or CUSP model of Gamma Ray Burst (GRB) continuum spectra, we revisit a select database of GRBs with credible cyclotron absorption features. We measure the break energy of the continuum, the slope below the break and deduce the soft photon energy or the electron beam Lorentz factor cutoff. We study the correlation (or lack of) between various parameters in the context of the CUSP model. One surprise result is that there appears to be marginal correlation between the break energy and the spectral index below the break. 20 refs., 8 figs., 2 tabs.

Book excerpt: Gamma-ray bursts are observed to have very steep spectra below photon energy /approximately/100 keV; some have photon number spectra as steep as F /proportional to/ E/sup 0/. This property has been difficult to explain in terms of most radiation processes. The BATSE experiment on the Gamma Ray Observatory should be able to test how common this spectral property is and whether there are bursts with even steeper low-energy spectra. To explain this spectral steepness, we study a model in which the /gamma/ radiation is produced by inverse-Compton and cyclotron scattering of blackbody radiation from the surface of a neutron star by relativistic electrons. If the neutron star has negligible magnetic field, Compton scattering dominates in producing the observed gamma-ray burst spectra. If the field exceeds 10/sup 10/ G, cyclotron scattering is more important. In the low-magnetic-field case, steep spectra may be produced via the suppression of the low energy part of the ''cooling spectrum'' (the spectrum integrated over the radiation lifetime of an electron), as a result of the smaller and more collimated photon flux an electron sees as it moves away from the neutron star. In the high-magnetic-field case, low-energy suppression occurs because electrons with higher energies scatter the blackbody photons more efficiently due to the cyclotron resonance, preferentially producing high energy photons. 27 refs., 5 figs.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this program was to analyse and interpret gamma-ray burst (GRB) data using both telescope mode data and single detector burst mode data from COMPTEL. Collectively, these data span the energy range from 300 keV up to 30 MeV. The initial goal of our proposal was to perform a standard analysis for each significant GRB event seen by COMPTEL. This includes GRBs that are registered by the telescope mode data as well as GRBs that are registered only in the burst mode data. (The latter category includes both GRBs that he outside of the FoV as well as GRBs within the FoV that are too weak to be seen in the telescope mode.) A second goal of our proposal was to define a set of data products (including deconvolved photon spectra) that, for each detected GRB event, would be made available via the COMPTEL GRB Web Page. The third goal of our program was to perform more detailed studies of selected GRB events. This represented a continuation of past GRB studies by the COMPTEL team. In general, we have met with only limited success in achieving these goals, in part due to the limited resources provided and our philosophy of utilizing local high school students to participate in this effort. Using local high school student support, however, we expect that considerable progress will be made in our efforts to catalog the COMPTEL gamma-ray burst data between now and the end of the current academic year. Book excerpt: The authors summarize the spectral characteristics of a sample of 22 bright gamma-ray bursts detected with the gamma-ray burst sensors aboard the satellite Ginga. This instrument employed a proportional and scintillation counter to provide sensitivity to photons in the 2--400 keV range, providing a unique opportunity to characterize the largely unexplored X-ray properties of gamma-ray bursts. The photon spectra of the Ginga bursts are well described by a low energy slope, a bend energy, and a high energy slope. In the energy range where they can be compared, this result is consistent with burst spectral analyses obtained from the BATSE experiment aboard the Compton Observatory. However, below 20 keV they find evidence for a positive spectral number index in approximately 40% of their burst sample, with some evidence for a strong rolloff at lower energies in a few events. They find that the distribution of spectral bend energies extends below 10 keV. The observed ratio of energy emitted in the X-rays relative to the gamma-rays can be much larger than a few percent and, in fact, is sometimes larger than unity. The average for their sample is 24%.
