Book Analysis of Engraving and Wear in a Projectile Rotating Band

Download or read book Analysis of Engraving and Wear in a Projectile Rotating Band written by Peter Chen and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 21 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A large deformation analysis of the engraving process and wear in a projectile rotating band is considered by using the finite element program ABAQUS. The tube and the projectile are assumed to be rigid. and the bore of the tube is assumed to be smooth and axisymmetric. An elastic-plastic material model is chosen for the copper band, which remains attached to the projectile, and an appropriate coefficient of sliding friction is chosen. The magnitude and distribution of the contact pressure between the band and the tube are obtained during engraving. The band pressure is large with severe plastic deformation occurring in the band.

Book Wear of Projectile Rotating Bands

Download or read book Wear of Projectile Rotating Bands written by R. S. Montgomery and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 27 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rotating or driving bands are bands relatively soft materials surrounding a projectile. They have a number of functions the chief of which is probably that they produce stabilizing rotating of the projectile when they are engraved or keyed into the rifling. These bands are used on spin-stabilized projectiles as small as 20 mm caliber, but this discussion concerns especially the larger cannon, i.e., in excess of 105 mm. Excess wear of projectile rotating bands has a number of important negative consequences including inaccuracy and short rounds. There are two distinctly different mechanisms of wear. At low speeds near the beginning of motion, wear is by adhesion, abrasion, and even under some conditions, scuffing. After a few centimeters of sliding, a thin surface film of molten band material is formed and the remainder of the sliding is melt-lubricated. While metal-on-metal sliding is limited to the first few centimeters, it is very important and can result in serious wear problems down bore. The exact wear of rotating bands depends on the motion of the projectile in the bore of the cannon. Therefore, this motion can be inferred from the wear.

Ballistic studies include applications as varied as the study of the structural and control behavior of rockets and communication satellites; bird strike effects on commercial aircraft, terrorist attacks and automobile crack worthiness modelling. Many basic problems of ballistics are similar to those in other fields of applications, such as combustion, heat conduction, in-flight structural behaviour, trajectory related issues, contact, impact, penetration, structural response to shock waves and many others.A valuable contribution to its field, this text will be of interest to researchers involved in the different areas of computational ballistics and their relationship between computational methods and experiments. Notable topics include: Systems and Technolog; Combustion and Heat Transfer; Propellants; Fluid Dynamics; Fluid Flow and Aerodynamics; In-Flight Structural Behaviour and Material Response; Guidance and Control; Perforation and Penetration Mechanics; Fluid-structure Interaction; Experimental Mechanics/ballistic and Field Testing; High Rate Loads; Composite Material; Shock and Impact.

Book Friction of Rotating Band Material During Engraving and Initial Projectile Travel

Download or read book Friction of Rotating Band Material During Engraving and Initial Projectile Travel written by R. S. Montgomery and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The sliding characteristics and coefficients of friction of rotating band and potential rotating band material on steel were studied in the laboratory at velocities corresponding with projectile velocities near the origin-of-rifling. The band materials investigated were gilding metal, 7075 aluminum alloy, AZ61A magnesium alloy, sintered iron, soft iron, nylon 6-6, and vulcanized fiber. It is possible to draw a number of conclusions and make a number of conjectures about the engraving and initial travel of cannon projectiles from the results of this study. A comparison of the different sliding characteristics and laboratory friction coefficients provides insight into the behavior of projectiles and will help to allow the design of rotating bands without the expensive extensive firing of an actual cannon. Book Rotating Band Study Test of 3 in 70 AA Projectiles with Armco Iron Rotating Bands

Download or read book Rotating Band Study Test of 3 in 70 AA Projectiles with Armco Iron Rotating Bands written by and published by . This book was released on 1951 with total page 35 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 3-in./70 projectiles of various types, fitted with gilding metal rotating bands, have been observed to exhibit serious band wear; that is, partial or complete obliteration of the engraving of the bands recovered after firing. It was desired to investigate the effect of replacing the gilding metal with soft iron, in order to determine the results of using a material with a considerably increased melting point, and if this change would produce a band which did not fail, to determine the effect upon gun performance.

Book Analysis of Wear Data for the 155mm Xm198

Download or read book Analysis of Wear Data for the 155mm Xm198 written by Richard G. Hasenbein and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This test attempts to determine which characteristics of tube or projectile cause or influence muzzle wear, particularly for the 155mm XM198 howitzer family of components (XM199 cannon, XM549 projectile, XM123 propelling charge). The test was limited to an evaluation of conditions which either are known or are suspected to have an impact on muzzle wear. The assumption was made that the extent of shell body engraving is directly proportional to the extent of muzzle wear. No single variable under observation was found which controls the presence of body engraving; it was concluded that a number of causes, perhaps in specific combinations, produce this effect. Several parameters were found, however, which increase either the incidence or the extent of body engraving including coppering, projectile seating as influenced by the forcing cone, dynamic instability, projectile imbalance, and escape of propellant gases ahead of the rotating band. Based solely on the results of this test, a hypothesis is proposed concerning the mechanism of muzzle wear.

Book Engraving of Rotating Bands A Modification of Metal Flow Pattern

Download or read book Engraving of Rotating Bands A Modification of Metal Flow Pattern written by and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An evaluation of the commencement -of-rifling (C.O.R.) geometry suggests that the mode of deformation of the rotating band by the rifling is inefficient. Observation of rotating bands of fired and retrieved projectiles confirms the above evaluation. Engravers, simulating the conventional design of C.O.R. as well as the proposed modification, were fabricated. Slugs of rotating band material were engraved with the simulated engravers. Metallographic data on the laboratory engraved slugs were compared with those of retrieved projectiles; results from the two simulating designs were also compared. Similarities were found between retrieved bands and simulated conventional design, while the simulated modification resulted in change in metal-flow pattern close to the intended one. Reduced engraving forces were observed as predicted and can be explained by reduced deformation forces when the modified design of C.O.R. is being simulated. It is suggested that reduced deformation forces will reduce wear at the commencement-of-rifling.

Book Modeling of Barrel Projectile Interaction in a Rotating Band

Download or read book Modeling of Barrel Projectile Interaction in a Rotating Band written by and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ABAQUS program was used and a refined finite element mesh was chosen to complete the modeling of the barrel/projectile interaction in a rotating band. The calculations for the engraving processes proceeded until the projectile had passed completely through the forcing cone in the land and groove. The axially symmetric cases were considered and the elasticity of the tube and projectile was neglected. Sliding friction was considered and the copper band was either elastic-plastic or ideally plastic. The magnitude and distribution of the contact pressure between the band and the tube were obtained during and after engraving. For the first time we have observed the opening of a gap between the band and the bore after engraving was completed, even when we observed full contact in the forcing cone.
