The method is based on integration of axial and radial momentum equations developed in the paper. Axial and radial forces are assumed to be describable by drag and radial force coefficients. Computer solutions of the equations are compared to measured parachute loads and to parachute mouth and maximum diameters from tests of 23- and 76-ft diameter conical ribbon parachutes. Comparison of load histories indicated that snatch loads depend to a large extent on deployment bag design and packing influences. Computed loads and parachute size histories for the inflation process compared favorably with flight data. The concept of a radial force coefficient appears to have considerable merit as a means of computing inflation for most parachutes.

Book excerpt: Prachute design and operational data were collected on a series of rocket powered sled tests conducted on the Air Force Flight Test Center Track at Edwards Air Force Base, California. Parachute deployment velocities range between Mach 0.76 and 1.57. The majority of the test parachutes were designed to have a drag area of approximately 15 square feet. Limited testing was accomplished with some configurations of reduced drag area to investigate effects of changing scale. Clustering of parachutes was also investigated with triple clusters of FIST Ribbon parachutes. The data obtained during the program included inflation characteristics, opening shock factors, drag forces, inflated area relationships, and stability of the parachutes through the velocity ranges investigated. Book excerpt: A New approach to the scaling of parachute performance is presented, based upon variables inherent in the inflation process such as weight, time, geometry, etc. Limitations of conventional scaling parameters such as Reynold's, Froude, and Mach numbers as applied to parachutes are discussed. Examples of parachute inflation and steady state performance are correlated with a scale factor designated as a Mass Ratio, which is the ratio of the system mass to a mass of atmosphere associated with the parachute size, inflation time, altitude and deployment velocity. For advanced opening shock analyses, the concept of variable mass ratio during canopy inflation is proposed, and the effects of partial canopy inflation at suspension line stretch are discussed. Although the solid cloth types of parachutes are primarily used as examples, the ideas of mass ratio, initial area, and analysis techniques are applicable to all types of parachutes. (Author).

The model is based on the traditional, practical treatment of the fluid resistance of rigid bodies in non-steady flow, with appropriate extensions to accommodate change in canopy inflated shape. Correlations for the steady drag and steady radial force as functions of the inflated radius are required as input to the dynamic model. In a novel approach, the radical force is expressed in terms of easily obtainable drag and reefing line tension measurements. A series of wind tunnel experiments provides the needed correlations. Coefficients associated with the added mass of fluid are evaluated by calibrating the model against an extensive reliable set of flight data. A parameter is introduced which appears to universally govern the strong dependence of the axial added mass coefficient on motion history. Thought comparisons with flight data, the model is shown to realistically predict inflation forces for ribbon and ringslot canopies over a wide range of sizes and deployment conditions.
