Book Analysis and Mitigation of Mechanical Shock Effects on High Speed Planing Boats

Download or read book Analysis and Mitigation of Mechanical Shock Effects on High Speed Planing Boats written by Sean David Kearns and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: United States Special Forces use high-speed planing boats in the performance of their missions. Operation of these boats, particularly in rough seas, exposes the occupants to severe mechanical shock exposure that has been linked to significant increase in the rates of acute and chronic injury. While many government and civilian organizations have researched various aspects of this problem over the past decade or more, no effective solution has yet been implemented in the fleet. In response to this problem, the Commander Naval Special Warfare Command in San Diego, CA forwarded a request to MIT's Ocean Engineering Department calling for a study of the problem. The object of this thesis is to conduct a comprehensive analysis of the problem, to research methods by which the problem can be mitigated, and to develop and validate a method for laboratory design, test, and evaluation, of shock mitigation systems. First, a theoretical and empirical study is conducted of the hydrodynamic interaction between a boat's hull and the seaway, and how this interaction results in the generation of mechanical shock. Actual acceleration data is obtained from the boats while underway in typical operating conditions, and other similar data is obtained from previous studies. Second, the mechanisms by which exposure to mechanical shock and vibration causes acute and chronic injury are investigated. Past human and animal testing is reviewed, along with information on the transmissibility and mechanical impedance of the human body. Information of this type, along with other injury data compilation studies, have contributed to existing injury prediction. Third, a study is made of the methods by which mechanical shock exposure on high-speed boats can be mitigated. Interfaces (e.g. - hull-seaway) are identified where shock mitigation can be achieved, and existing or conceptual shock mitigation systems are discussed.

Book Human Factors for Naval Marine Vehicle Design and Operation

Download or read book Human Factors for Naval Marine Vehicle Design and Operation written by Jonathan M. Ross and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2017-03-02 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a driving need for naval professionals to focus on human factors issues. The number of maritime accidents is increasing and the chief cause is human error, both by the designer and the operator. Decreasing crew size, lack of experienced operators, operations in higher sea states and fatigue worsen the situation. Automation can be a partial solution, but flawed automated systems actually contribute to accidents at sea. Up to now, there has been no overarching resource available to naval marine vehicle designers and human factors professionals which bridges the gap between the human and the machine in this context. Designers understand the marine vehicle; human factors professionals understand how a particular environment affects people. Yet neither has a practical understanding of the other's field, and thus communicating requirements and solutions is difficult. This book integrates knowledge from numerous sources as well as the advice of a panel of eight recognized experts in the fields of related research, development and operation. The result is a reference that bridges the communications gap, and stands to help enhance the design and operation of all naval marine vehicles.

Book Characterization of Stiffening and Damping Materials for Planing Boat Shock Mitigation

Download or read book Characterization of Stiffening and Damping Materials for Planing Boat Shock Mitigation written by and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 23 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The occupants of high-speed planing boats operating in heavy seas are subject to repeated shock loads that can injure or impair performance. Identification and evaluation of shock mitigation concepts requires development of a nonlinear, time-domain, wave-to-wave elastic planing boat/human dynamic simulation. Shock mitigation concepts include the use of various stiffening and damping materials in the cockpit or within the hull structure. This report summarizes a general method for characterizing stiffening and damping materials and devices for use in a time-domain planing boat simulation, and derives the equations for the stiffening characteristics of several materials and devices.

The conference attracts academics, researchers, designers, operators and shipowners. It provides a platform for the presentation and discussion of developments in the design, construction and operation of high speed marine vessels. More than 40 submissions were received; 27 papers were selected for presentation and publication in this book after a rigorous review process. The book provides an overview of current innovations and developments, and can be a reference for all those working in the field of high-speed marine vehicles.

Book Drop Tests to Support Water Impact and Planing Boat Dynamics Theory

Download or read book Drop Tests to Support Water Impact and Planing Boat Dynamics Theory written by and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The occupants of high-speed planing boats are exposed to repeated shock impacts that result from hull slamming during operation in heavy seas. An important component of the research necessary for developing shock reduction technology is two dimensional water-impact theory. Drop tests provide data necessary for evaluating. shock reduction concepts, and for developing and validating two-dimensional theory. This report summarizes the method and results of an initial series of drop tests to baseline the water-impact characteristics of a rigid, high aspect-ratio, aluminum, prismatic hull model with 20-deg deadrise. Parameters varied during the baseline tests including drop height and weight. Comparison between the experimental data and CSS predictions, and recommendations for follow-on drop tests are given.
