Book Regional Economic Development

Download or read book Regional Economic Development written by Benjamin Higgins and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-05 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1988. Leading international researchers in regional economic development have contributed an integrated set of chapters reviewing the whole field and taking stock of current thinking. The book is in honour of François Perroux, the father of regional development theory, whose contributions to two important concepts in economics – time and space – have been substantial. The book comprises five parts. Part one covers Perroux's work in general and on growth poles in particular. Part two deals with 'the politics of place', population and regional development, techniques for regional policy analysis and a neoclassical approach to regional economics. In part three the Canadian scene is reviewed at national and regional levels. In part four chapters on urban development, small and medium-size cities, and capital grants deal with the experiences of other countries. Part five concludes the book with a chapter on growth poles, optimal size of cities, and regional disparities and government intervention.

Book excerpt: In the United States, some populations suffer from far greater disparities in health than others. Those disparities are caused not only by fundamental differences in health status across segments of the population, but also because of inequities in factors that impact health status, so-called determinants of health. Only part of an individual's health status depends on his or her behavior and choice; community-wide problems like poverty, unemployment, poor education, inadequate housing, poor public transportation, interpersonal violence, and decaying neighborhoods also contribute to health inequities, as well as the historic and ongoing interplay of structures, policies, and norms that shape lives. When these factors are not optimal in a community, it does not mean they are intractable: such inequities can be mitigated by social policies that can shape health in powerful ways. Communities in Action: Pathways to Health Equity seeks to delineate the causes of and the solutions to health inequities in the United States. This report focuses on what communities can do to promote health equity, what actions are needed by the many and varied stakeholders that are part of communities or support them, as well as the root causes and structural barriers that need to be overcome.

Book A Study of the Causes and Consequences of Regional Income Inequality in Canada

Download or read book A Study of the Causes and Consequences of Regional Income Inequality in Canada written by Yannick Marchand and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "From 1981 to 2011, Canada, like many other OECD countries, experienced a sharp increase in income inequality. Using income data from the 20% sample of the long-form censuses and the national household survey, this thesis investigates the changing structure and nature of income inequality across Canadian regions. Analysis of these sub-national geographies of inequality suggest an increasing degree of spatial clustering (both high and low values) of inequality along an east-west divide as well as across the urban-rural spectrum, especially within large metropolitan areas and their surroundings. In fact, over the period of study, I find that large metropolitan areas are the main drivers of the observed increase in inequality at the national level. Levels of inequality in medium and small urban areas are also increasing, whereas on the other hand, for most rural areas inequality appears to remain stable over the last 30 years. To understand the causes of such variations in regional levels of inequality, I develop and estimate a series of spatial panel error regression models. Results suggest that differences in the precariousness of regional labour markets, along with a weak manufacturing sector and increasing inequalities in terms of educational attainment all contribute to more unequal distributions of income. I also identify important differences in these causes across urban and rural regions. Finally, I investigate the effects of income inequality on regional economic growth. Using the standard approach relying on cross-sectional models, the consistent pattern I find is that regions with initially higher levels of inequality do subsequently experience greater average annual growth rates over the long-run (from 1981 to 2011). In contrast, the short-/medium-term responses are different. Results from fixed-effects models point to a negative relationship between inequality and growth. Moreover, across both types of models, I find significant differences between urban and rural regions." --

Book excerpt: The purpose of this paper is to take stock of regional issues in Canada and to provide a perspective that permits an understanding of the country's regional economic structure. The first section profiles the regional economies, featuring descriptive elements that play an important role in the perspective adopted for this study. The following section considers the evolution of regional disparities and reviews literature on the subject, with special attention to the issue of convergence and human capital. The final section attempts to build a framework that can provide some glimpses of the future evolution of regional disparities. The appendix summarizes some theories used in analysis of regional disparities.
