Addressing the issue of phrase structure in another domain, Margaret Speas investigates the status of null pronominal objects in Navajo. Following Rizzi (1986), she assumes that null pronouns must meet both a licensing and an identification condition. More specifically, she demonstrates that distributional restrictions on null pronominal objects in Navajo can be explained if it is assumed that null objects obey the identification condition expressed by the Generalized Control Rule of Huang (1984). Distinguishing three types of null objects, she argues that relevant licensing condition on two subtypes of null objects involves rich agreement. However, it appears that there are languages lacking rich agreement but with pro in object position. Speas accounts for these phenomena by a rule of economy of projection. A second series of papers is concerned with the way in which functional categories derive aspects of sentential interpretation. Three issues in this research program are investigated here: external arguments as arguments of functional projections (Kratzer), the specificity interpretation of clitics (Sportiche), and the interpretation of tense (Stowell). In all three cases, phrase structure is put to use to derive interpretive effects. Angelika Kratzer proposes that external arguments are not part of the verb.

This book proposes a restrictive theory of word order and phrase structure that denies this assumption. According to this theory, phrase structure always completely determines linear order, so that if two phrases differ in linear order, they must also differ in hierarchical structure. It is standardly assumed that Universal Grammar (UG) allows a given hierarchical representation to be associated with more than one linear order. For example, English and Japanese phrases consisting of a verb and its complement are thought of as symmetrical to one another, differing only in linear order. The Antisymmetry of Syntax proposes a restrictive theory of word order and phrase structure that denies this assumption. According to this theory, phrase structure always completely determines linear order, so that if two phrases differ in linear order, they must also differ in hierarchical structure. More specifically, Richard Kayne shows that asymmetric c-command invariably maps into linear precedence. From this follows, with few further hypotheses, a highly specific theory of word order in UG: that complement positions must always follow their associated head, and that specifiers and adjoined elements must always precede the phrase that they are sister to. A further result is that standard X-bar theory is not a primitive component of UG. Rather, X-bar theory expresses a set of antisymmetric properties of phrase structure. The neogrammarian Paul wrote in 1920: "Es liegt auf der Hand, daß die Vorgänge der Spracherlernung von der al lergrößten Wichtigkeit für die Erklärung der Veränderung des Sprachusus sind, weil sie die wichtigste Ursache für diese Veränderung abgeben." But what is the reason why a child's grammar differs from that of his or her environ ment? Can we say that there are some principles which govern this change? Many linguists have tried to answer these important questions from different view points. We will sketch he re some of the most interesting ones. Sapir (1921) develops the principle of drift which was meant to describe the laws of diachronic change in linguistic systems. This concerns long-term tendencies of gram matical change, which probably are of universal character but result in one or another effect, according to the specific structure of a given language. The tendencies concerning syntactical change are determined by morphological change; morphological change, for its part, is determined by phonological change. All such instances of change aim at the one and only goal to always provide sufficient means for expressing all those grammatical relations which are necessary to keep up communication.
