Book Practical Methods of Optimization

Download or read book Practical Methods of Optimization written by R. Fletcher and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2013-06-06 with total page 470 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fully describes optimization methods that are currently most valuable in solving real-life problems. Since optimization has applications in almost every branch of science and technology, the text emphasizes their practical aspects in conjunction with the heuristics useful in making them perform more reliably and efficiently. To this end, it presents comparative numerical studies to give readers a feel for possibile applications and to illustrate the problems in assessing evidence. Also provides theoretical background which provides insights into how methods are derived. This edition offers revised coverage of basic theory and standard techniques, with updated discussions of line search methods, Newton and quasi-Newton methods, and conjugate direction methods, as well as a comprehensive treatment of restricted step or trust region methods not commonly found in the literature. Also includes recent developments in hybrid methods for nonlinear least squares; an extended discussion of linear programming, with new methods for stable updating of LU factors; and a completely new section on network programming. Chapters include computer subroutines, worked examples, and study questions.

Book Multiple Criteria Optimization

Download or read book Multiple Criteria Optimization written by Xavier Gandibleux and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-04-11 with total page 515 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The generalized area of multiple criteria decision making (MCDM) can be defined as the body of methods and procedures by which the concern for multiple conflicting criteria can be formally incorporated into the analytical process. MCDM consists mostly of two branches, multiple criteria optimization and multi-criteria decision analysis (MCDA). While MCDA is typically concerned with multiple criteria problems that have a small number of alternatives often in an environment of uncertainty (location of an airport, type of drug rehabilitation program), multiple criteria optimization is typically directed at problems formulated within a mathematical programming framework, but with a stack of objectives instead of just one (river basin management, engineering component design, product distribution). It is about the most modern treatment of multiple criteria optimization that this book is concerned. I look at this book as a nicely organized and well-rounded presentation of what I view as ”new wave” topics in multiple criteria optimization. Looking back to the origins of MCDM, most people agree that it was not until about the early 1970s that multiple criteria optimization c- gealed as a field. At this time, and for about the following fifteen years, the focus was on theories of multiple objective linear programming that subsume conventional (single criterion) linear programming, algorithms for characterizing the efficient set, theoretical vector-maximum dev- opments, and interactive procedures.

Book Electric and Magnetic Fields

Download or read book Electric and Magnetic Fields written by R. Belmans and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains the edited versions of the papers presented at the Second International Workshop on Electric and Magnetic Fields held at the Katholieke Universiteit van Leuven (Belgium) in May 1994. This Workshop deals with numerical solutions of electromagnetic problems in real life applications. The topics include coupled problems (thermal, mechanical, electric circuits), CAD & CAM applications, 3D eddy current and high frequency problems, optimisation and application oriented numerical problems. This workshop was organised jointly by the AIM (Association of Engineers graduated from de Montefiore Electrical Institute) together with the Departments of Electrical Engineering of the Katholieke Universiteit van Leuven (Prof. R. Belmans), the University of Gent (Prof. J. Melkebbek) and the University of Liege (Prof. W. Legros). These laboratories are working together in the framework of the Pole d'Attraction Interuniversitaire - Inter-University Attractie-Pole 51 - on electromagnetic systems led by the University of Liege and the research work they perform covers most of the topics of the Workshop. One of the principal aims of this Workshop was to provide a bridge between the electromagnetic device designers, mainly industrialists, and the electromagnetic field computation developers. Therefore, this book contains a continuous spectrum of papers from application of electromagnetic models in industrial design to presentation of new theoretical developments.

Book Harmonic Balance for Nonlinear Vibration Problems

Download or read book Harmonic Balance for Nonlinear Vibration Problems written by Malte Krack and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-03-23 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph presents an introduction to Harmonic Balance for nonlinear vibration problems, covering the theoretical basis, its application to mechanical systems, and its computational implementation. Harmonic Balance is an approximation method for the computation of periodic solutions of nonlinear ordinary and differential-algebraic equations. It outperforms numerical forward integration in terms of computational efficiency often by several orders of magnitude. The method is widely used in the analysis of nonlinear systems, including structures, fluids and electric circuits. The book includes solved exercises which illustrate the advantages of Harmonic Balance over alternative methods as well as its limitations. The target audience primarily comprises graduate and post-graduate students, but the book may also be beneficial for research experts and practitioners in industry.

Book Global Optimization

Download or read book Global Optimization written by Reiner Horst and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-27 with total page 705 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The enormous practical need for solving global optimization problems coupled with a rapidly advancing computer technology has allowed one to consider problems which a few years ago would have been considered computationally intractable. As a consequence, we are seeing the creation of a large and increasing number of diverse algorithms for solving a wide variety of multiextremal global optimization problems. The goal of this book is to systematically clarify and unify these diverse approaches in order to provide insight into the underlying concepts and their pro perties. Aside from a coherent view of the field much new material is presented. By definition, a multiextremal global optimization problem seeks at least one global minimizer of a real-valued objective function that possesses different local n minimizers. The feasible set of points in IR is usually determined by a system of inequalities. It is well known that in practically all disciplines where mathematical models are used there are many real-world problems which can be formulated as multi extremal global optimization problems.

Book Statistical Analysis

Download or read book Statistical Analysis written by A. A. Afifi and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2014-05-09 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Statistical Analysis: A Computer Oriented Approach discusses the probabilistic foundations of statistics, the standard statistical inference procedures, regression, and correlation analysis. The book also explains the analysis of variance and multivariate analysis, with an emphasis on the applications and interpretations of statistical tools. The text defines computer terminologies, coding sheets, format statements, and packaged statistical programs or software. Software and other related programs are tools for data analysis: the "frequency count program" analyzes discrete observations; and the "descriptive program" investigates one continuous variable. Other similar tools are the "descriptive program with strata" that evaluates more than one continuous random variable, and the "crosstabulation program" that reviews contingency tables. The book also explains the general linear model which is applied to the estimators and tests of hypotheses for simple and multiple linear regression models. The text shows how different packaged computer programs can be used to perform analyses of variance. For example, the factorial programs can analyze special designs of randomized blocks, replicated randomized blocks, and nested designs. For other special designs, including the split plot and Latin square designs, the investigator can make adaptations to the standard factorial program. The book is intended for students of statistical inference, computer programming, and readers interested in advanced mathematics.
