Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2, which causes the disease known as COVID-19, has infected people in 212 countries so far and on every continent except Antarctica. Vast changes to our home lives, social interactions, government functioning and relations between countries have swept the world in a few months and are difficult to hold in one’s mind at one time. That is why a collaborative effort such as this edited, multidisciplinary collection is needed. This book confronts the vulnerabilities and interconnectedness made visible by the pandemic and its consequences, along with the legal, ethical and policy responses. These include vulnerabilities for people who have been harmed or will be harmed by the virus directly and those harmed by measures taken to slow its relentless march; vulnerabilities exposed in our institutions, governance and legal structures; and vulnerabilities in other countries and at the global level where persistent injustices harm us all. Hopefully, COVID-19 will forces us to deeply reflect on how we govern and our policy priorities; to focus preparedness, precaution, and recovery to include all, not just some. Published in English with some chapters in French.

Book The Scientific Study of General Intelligence

Download or read book The Scientific Study of General Intelligence written by Helmuth Nyborg and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2003-07-11 with total page 669 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book celebrates two triumphs in modern psychology: the successful development and application of a solid measure of general intelligence; and the personal courage and skills of the man who made this possible - Arthur R. Jensen from Berkeley University. The volume traces the history of intelligence from the early 19th century approaches, to the most recent analyses of the hierarchical structure of cognitive abilities, and documents the transition from a hopelessly confused concept of intelligence to the development of an objective measure of psychometric g. The contributions illustrate the impressive power g has with respect to predicting educational achievement, getting an attractive job, or social stratification. The book is divided into six parts as follows: Part I presents the most recent higher-stream analysis of cognitive abilities, Part II deals with biological aspects of g, such as research on brain imaging, glucose uptake, working memory, reaction time, inspection time, and other biological correlates, and concludes with the latest findings in g-related molecular genetics. Part III addresses demographic aspects of g, such as geographic-, race-, and sex-differences, and introduces differential psychological aspects as well. Part IV concentrates on the g nexus, and relates such highly diverse topics as sociology, genius, retardation, training, education, jobs, and crime to g. Part V contains chapters critical of research on g and its genetic relationship, and also presents a rejoinder. Part VI looks at one of the greatest contemporary psychologists, Professor Emeritus Arthur R. Jensen as teacher and mentor.

Book Dependence and Interdependence in Education RLE Edu A

Download or read book Dependence and Interdependence in Education RLE Edu A written by Keith Watson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-05-31 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume provides an international perspective on educational dependency in considering both theories and actual developments throughout the world. Some less developed countries, in expanding their education systems, have emulated Western academic-style systems and have increased their dependence on Western models in various respects including examination validation. Others have deliberately avoided this path and have experimented with systems more ‘relevant’ to development, often in a radical way. At a theoretical level, Marxist and neo-Marxist development theorists argue that education systems dependent on the West are evidence of economic dependency and confirmation of Marxist development theories; while others argue that the evidence suggests an interdependent world and that dependency theories do not apply in education.

Book Marpurg s Thoroughbass and Composition Handbook

Download or read book Marpurg s Thoroughbass and Composition Handbook written by David A. Sheldon and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Friedrich Wilhelm Marpurg is widely recognized today as a highly important, prolific, and influential writer of the 18th-century musical scene. His Handbuch, however, has not received the study and recognition it deserves as one of th e most significant and complete composition methods from any period in history. Within its 341 pages and almost 1000 musical examples, Marpurg leads his reader through an extensive course in musical composition beginning with the handling of every conceivable interval, then proceeding to writing for two or more voices, and ending with instruction in canon, fugue, and various types of interval counterpoint. The section devoted to fugue constitutes both a distillation and a refinement of Marpurg's Abhandlung von der Fuge (1753-54), the first monograph devoted to the subject. David Sheldon is a recognized authority on music theory in the critical mid-18th century decades when the Baroque as a musical concept passes into the great Classic Era. This volume carefully examines the material of the Handbuch with regard to origin and influence, while organizing it in such a way as to clarify Marpurg's main concepts and contributions. In this new, translated form the Handbuch will offer much to the present-day scholar and student.
