Book excerpt: La vision traditionnelle des systèmes financiers s'organise autour de deux points : la distinction des systèmes financiers à partir du mode de financement dominant et l'efficacité des systèmes financiers en termes de performance et de stabilité économiques. Cette approche distingue deux types de systèmes financiers : un système orienté vers la banque (allemagne, france et japon) et un système oriente vers le marché (etats-unis et royaume uni). Parce que les problèmes d'asymétrie d'information, d'agence et de contrôle sont réduits dans le système orienté vers la banque, ce dernier est considéré plus efficace et susceptible de supporter des taux d'endettement plus élevés. C’est le cas des systèmes allemands et japonais qui possèdent des caractéristiques institutionnelles appropriées au règlement de ces problèmes (implication des banques dans la structure du propriété et du contrôle, absence de séparation entre le capital et le contrôle) et que les pays anglo-saxons ne possèdent pas. L’objet de cette thèse est de vérifier la validité empirique de telles affirmations. On insiste, entre autres, sur l'impact de la structure de propriété et de contrôle sur les choix de financement des firmes, sur les liens entre les mécanismes de contrôle et la performance économique, et sur l'influence des structures financières quant aux décisions d'investissement. Notre démarche comporte trois volets. Dans un premier temps, les fondements théoriques de l'approche traditionnelle sont étudies. La distinction fondée sur les modes de financement dominant est analysée dans une deuxième partie. Enfin, les implications de la structure financière sur l'activité réelle sont testées. Au vu des résultats, la distinction traditionnelle des systèmes de financement ne peuvent pas être conservées. Par ailleurs, il n'est pas possible de conclure à un système de financement plus performant ou plus stable que d'autre.

Book excerpt: The efficient markets hypothesis has been the central proposition in finance for nearly thirty years. It states that securities prices in financial markets must equal fundamental values, either because all investors are rational or because arbitrage eliminates pricing anomalies. This book describes an alternative approach to the study of financial markets: behavioral finance. This approach starts with an observation that the assumptions of investor rationality and perfect arbitrage are overwhelmingly contradicted by both psychological and institutional evidence. In actual financial markets, less than fully rational investors trade against arbitrageurs whose resources are limited by risk aversion, short horizons, and agency problems. The book presents and empirically evaluates models of such inefficient markets. Behavioral finance models both explain the available financial data better than does the efficient markets hypothesis and generate new empirical predictions. These models can account for such anomalies as the superior performance of value stocks, the closed end fund puzzle, the high returns on stocks included in market indices, the persistence of stock price bubbles, and even the collapse of several well-known hedge funds in 1998. By summarizing and expanding the research in behavioral finance, the book builds a new theoretical and empirical foundation for the economic analysis of real-world markets.
