Book Southern California s Anaheim Long Beach Catalina Island Newport Beach Huntington Beach San Juan Capistrano Beyond

Download or read book Southern California s Anaheim Long Beach Catalina Island Newport Beach Huntington Beach San Juan Capistrano Beyond written by Don Young and published by Hunter Publishing, Inc. This book was released on 2011-04-20 with total page 141 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To travel south along the coast from Greater Los Angeles is a totally different experience than the travel north from there. Certainly, the coastline is beautiful in both directions, but where the northern reaches are given to older, more self-contained communities, rapidly giving way to a totally rural environment, the southern coast is a mecca for yuppies. This is where the large shopping malls can be found, the nouvelle cuisine, the jam-packed yacht harbors, the trendy art colonies, the all-glass churches, the manicured golf courses. This, perhaps, is the stereotypical southern California, a place where young men and women wear a perpetual tan, where surfboards and swim fins are two of the most common household appliances, and where every day affords the opportunity for new adventures. This guide explores the region in depth, with an emphasis on outdoor activities, from golf and birdwatching to wine tours, watersports and hiking. We start with Anaheim, then move south to Long Beach, Whittier, Catalina Island, Costa Mesa, Laguna Beach, New Port Beach, Huntington Beach and San Juan Capistrano. Touring chapters take you to all the well-known sights, and then lead you off to unusual attractions that will amuse and delight you. Accommodation sections cover all, from camping to B & Bs to historical houses. Restaurants and cafes are chosen for their charm and impressive cuisine. Often, doing something that you've done a dozen times before, but doing it in a different place, at a different time or with a different person can make all the difference. Under the right circumstances, even the routine can become an adventure. Everything in life is an adventure. At least, it is the first time you experience it. Every sight, every sound, every scent, every taste, every sensation is an adventure that once. Why? Because it is a discovery. And every new discovery is an adventure. So the authors dedicate this book to discovery: to experiencing new places, new people, new activities, new sensations, but above all, to discovering new dimensions within ourselves.

Book Anaheim Southern California

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Anaheim, Southern California: Its History, Climate, Soil and Advantages for Home Seekers and Settlers One of the peculiarities of the climate cf Anaheim, in common with other points on the coast, is the gray mornings. To a Visitor from the East dur ing the summer months it would seem surely the day will be a rainy one, but after a short experience they will becpme accustomed to an obscured sunrise and about nine or ten o'clock a breaking awav of the cloud) curtain which had appeared so threatening, proving to be what is known as a high fog which, rising from the ocean, floats quietly inland about midnight, seldom. Touching the earth but hanging suspended afew hundred feet above it, temper ing the rays of the sun in the early morning. Then the seabreeze comes across the plain and adds its coolness and freshness to the air until becoming heated by contact with the warm earth of the interior it rises and, carrying with it the fogbank broken into fleecy masses, carries it back a flying squadron of the ships of the air to its native ocean, after which the clear, blue sky is unbroken by a single cloud except, perhaps, away off over the ocean or just above the snowy peaks of the Sierra Madre; but until four or five o'clock the seabreeze continues to blow a cool, inwgorating blast which grad ualiy dies away toward sunset and the still evening air - almost dewless-is so quiet that a lighted candle can be carried about the garden with little dan ger of being blown out. In the fall the seabreeze generally ceases to blow regularly, and the sun rises clear and warm, so that frequently our warmest weather is during the autumn months, but the temperature seldom reaches a higher point than 90 and is hardly ever above 75 at night and generally drops to about 60 toward morning. The winter average will be about 20 below these figures, and very uniformly so, though the' summer average will not be over 80 for the day. A peculiarity of this dry climate is that a like temperature by thermometer does not indicate a like feeling of discomfort as at an Eastern point. Close oh servers have made a difference of 10 to 15 in the temperature to be neces sary tolike unpleasant results. In a residence of nine years in Anaheim the writer has found it uncomfortable to sleep under a blanket but three nights, and woolen clothes are worn always. Our spring commences about 1st of January with the temperature and characteristics of an Eastern May which lasts until about April lst, when we have another three months corresponding with an Eastern June. Then three months of July followed by three months of September, much of the latter being very similar to the Indian summer. Book excerpt: As one of the largest cities in one of the nation's most populous counties, Anaheim anchors a host of Orange County attractions, not the least of which are Disneyland, the 2002 World Champion Anaheim Angels, and the Anaheim Convention Center. But Anaheim's early history followed the hardscrabble route, with fitful years of early cityhood steered in part by hardy immigrant German vintners who, with a civic-mindedness, advanced the establishment of the churches, schools, banks, civic services, and a Carnegie Library that made Anaheim thrive. This collection of more than 200 vintage images reveals the foresight of such men as John Frohling, Charles Kohler, George Hansen, John Fischer, August Langenberger, and others who shaped the beginnings of one of California's great cities.
