There were four girls, but Toni was singled out to be abused mentally and was treated like a farm laborer. Later as a young attractive single adult and then as a widow with three children, the challenges on her character and patience seemed as if they would never stop. For a short while after Toni met an old boyfriend, a swave world traveller by the name of Whitey and married him, life seemed as it was going to finally be worth living, but that was not to be. This story also takes the reader through the period of WW11 and her"s and her two brother's contributions.

Book excerpt: This comparative study uncovers the differences and similarities in the experiences of Black women enslaved in colonial Canada and Jamaica, and demonstrates how differences in the exploitation of women's productive and reproductive labor caused slavery to falter in Canada and excel in the Caribbean. The research suggests that while the majority of Black women enslaved in early Canada were domestics, the majority of Jamaican women were field laborers, often performing some of the most labor-intensive work on the sugar plantations. While the efforts of the planter class to increase the number of children born to Jamaican women were not completely successful, reproduction seems to have been less of a concern in Canada where many Black women were often sold or freed because there was no use for them. The Canadian slave context seems to have allowed a broader range of material comfort as well. Despite obvious labor differences, Black women in Canada and Jamaica rejected their chattel status and condition, and resisted slavery similarly. This study is unique in its desire and ability to place Black Canadian slave women at the center of research, and then contextualize it with a Caribbean model.

Book excerpt: In 1792, the same year as the appearance of Mary Wollstonecraft's "A Vindication of the Rights of Woman," an anonymous treatise was published in German using Enlightenment principles to argue for equal rights for women in the domestic, political and religious spheres. The author was later revealed to be Theodor Gottlieb von Hippel, a friend of Kant and governing mayor of Koenigsberg, who, unlike Wollstonecraft, appealed mainly to men to loosen the bonds of women. The work also contained perhaps the first anthropological study examining the origin of the dominance of men. Translated into English as "On Improving the Status of Women," the work appears here for the first time in complete form in English, along with Hippel's collected writings on the status of women, from his very early Freemason address to his last novel. Included also are lengthy notes for a second addition of "On Improving the Status of Women," as well as the most complete biography of the author in English. Hippel is here depicted as a writer who, perhaps more than any other man in history, championed the cause of women's rights throughout his life, and as one of the earliest and most profound thinkers on the subject.
