Book The Erotics of Grief

Download or read book The Erotics of Grief written by Megan Moore and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2021-09-15 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Erotics of Grief considers how emotions propagate power by exploring whose lives are grieved and what kinds of grief are valuable within and eroticized by medieval narratives. Megan Moore argues that grief is not only routinely eroticized in medieval literature but that it is a foundational emotion of medieval elite culture. Focusing on the concept of grief as desire, Moore builds on the history of the emotions and Georges Bataille's theory of the erotic as the conflict between desire and death, one that perversely builds a sense of community organized around a desire for death. The link between desire and death serves as an affirmation of living communities. Moore incorporates literary, visual, and codicological evidence in sources from across the Mediterranean—from Old French chansons de geste, such as the Song of Roland and La mort le roi Artu and romances such as Erec et Enide, Philomena, and Floire et Blancheflor; to Byzantine and ancient Greek novels; to Middle English travel narratives such as Mandeville's Travels. In her reading of the performance of grief as one of community and remembrance, Moore assesses why some lives are imagined as mattering more than others and explores how a language of grief becomes a common language of status among the medieval Mediterranean elite.

Book The Truth Untold

  • Author : Jermicka Glenn
  • Publisher :
  • Release : 2020-12-24
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 71 pages

Download or read book The Truth Untold written by Jermicka Glenn and published by . This book was released on 2020-12-24 with total page 71 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sometimes we have trouble saying what we feel deep inside, because the thoughts are too heavy. Too sad., perhaps, a little too dark. We always get told to shake it off, just be happy. But no one explains to us what it means to be happy or why we can't stop and acknowledge those other feelings and try to understand ourselves from that point of view? All it does is make us lost and confused. This is for the people who can't speak those thoughts, who always get told to just be happy, this is for the lost souls, this is for anyone who feels like no one else can relate to them. It is okay to be sad, be lost, confused, burnt out, frustrated. Embrace that part of you. It's who you are. It's great being positive and sunshine. But you're human, it's okay to let go. You have a right to feel sad, to feel even depressed, to feel broke. There's nothing wrong with that. My only advice is don't let the darkness become you, only embrace it. If you're a lost soul. These poems are for you.

Book The Moral Psychology of Sadness

Download or read book The Moral Psychology of Sadness written by Anna Gotlib and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2017-11-30 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What does it mean to be sad? What difference does it make whether, how, and why we experience our own, and other people’s, sadness? Is sadness always appropriate and can it be a way of seeing more clearly into ourselves and others? In this volume, a multi-disciplinary team of scholars - from fields including philosophy, women’s and gender studies, bioethics and public health, and neuroscience - addresses these and other questions related to this nearly-universal emotion that all of us experience, and that some of us dread. Somewhat surprisingly, sadness has been largely ignored by philosophers and others within the humanities, or else under-theorized as a subject worthy of serious and careful attention. This volume reverses this trend, presenting sadness as not merely a feeling or affect, but an emotion of great moral significance that in important ways underwrites how we understand ourselves and each other.

Download or read book Emotional Advantage written by Randy Taran and published by Macmillan + ORM. This book was released on 2019-06-04 with total page 163 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “An antidote to emotional overwhelm—a powerful way to discover how useful your emotions can be in guiding you towards your best life.” —Marci Shimoff, #1 New York Times–bestselling author of Happy for No Reason Award-winning author, producer, and founder of Project Happiness, Randy Taran knows that every emotion, feeling, and mental state has the power to bring us back to our true essence. Emotional Advantage is your guide to getting there. We’ve learned a lot about the science of happiness and positive psychology, but what about the full range of human emotions, all of which factor into the human experience? What do we do when happiness eludes us—when life does not go as planned? It turns out that even negative emotions have something to offer, if we know how to learn from them. Have you ever woken up in a fog of feelings and felt directionless? Or maybe it was hard to pinpoint exactly what you were feeling, but it wasn’t where you wanted to be? What if we could actually use our feelings as a pathway to guide us back to our inner compass? What if, like alchemists, we had the tools to transform our emotions to take charge of creating our very best life? What if we could comprehend how even the most troublesome emotions are sending messages to alert, protect, and fuel us forward? Neuroscience reveals that to understand and utilize any emotion, we need to “name it to tame it.” Emotional Advantage shows us how a new perspective on fear can move us to courage, how guilt can clarify our values, and how anger can help us create healthy boundaries. “A guidebook to embracing the real version of yourself. If you’ve ever had to hide your feelings, or if you ever experience guilt or regret, you’ll feel like it’s written directly for you.” —Chris Guillebeau, author of The Happiness of Pursuit

  • ISBN : 0313385742
  • Pages : 201 pages

Download or read book Monogamy written by Marianne Brandon Ph.D and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2010-08-19 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text provides a groundbreaking look at sexual instincts and offers a clinical psychologist's and sex therapist's insights and solutions to the challenges of monogamous relationships. Monogamous relationships are firmly embedded in the framework of our society, and yet the divorce rate and common failures of intimacy in long-term relationships challenges the efficacy of this paradigm. Oddly, the concept of monogamy has been virtually ignored by mental health professionals, while anthropologists, sociologists, biologists, and zoologists have researched and explored the topic. Monogamy: The Untold Story presents not only the scientific research about the challenges of monogamy, but also the practical solutions to overcome them. In part one, the author explores sexual instincts and monogamy from an anthropological, biological, psychological, and social perspective. Part two offers men and women a step-by-step guide to enhancing passion and strengthening their intimate bond by capitalizing on their natural sexual instincts.

Book Companion to an Untold Story

Download or read book Companion to an Untold Story written by Marcia Aldrich and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 2012-09-15 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Marcia Aldrich’s friend took his own life at the age of forty-six, they had known each other many years. As part of his preparations for death, he gave her many of his possessions, concealing his purposes in doing so, and when he committed his long-contemplated act, he was alone in a bare apartment. In Companion to an Untold Story, Aldrich struggles with her own failure to act on her suspicions about her friend’s intentions. She pieces together the rough outline of his plan to die and the details of its execution. Yet she acknowledges that she cannot provide a complete narrative of why he killed himself. The story remains private to her friend, and out of that difficulty is born another story— the aftershocks of his suicide and the author’s responses to what it set in motion. This book, modeled on the type of reference book called a “companion,” attempts to find a form adequate to the way these two stories criss-cross, tangle, knot, and break. Organized alphabetically, the entries introduce, document, and reflect upon how suicide is so resistant to acceptance that it swallows up other aspects of a person’s life. Aldrich finds an indirect approach to her friend’s death, assembling letters, objects, and memories to archive an ungrievable loss and create a memorial to a life that does not easily make a claim on public attention. Intimate and austere, clear eyed and tender, this innovative work creates a new form in which to experience grief, remembrance, and reconciliation.

  • ISBN : 195069111X
  • Pages : 338 pages

Download or read book Heart of the Machine written by Richard Yonck and published by Arcade. This book was released on 2020-02-11 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For Readers of Ray Kurzweil and Michio Kaku, a New Look at the Cutting Edge of Artificial Intelligence Imagine a robotic stuffed animal that can read and respond to a child’s emotional state, a commercial that can recognize and change based on a customer’s facial expression, or a company that can actually create feelings as though a person were experiencing them naturally. Heart of the Machine explores the next giant step in the relationship between humans and technology: the ability of computers to recognize, respond to, and even replicate emotions. Computers have long been integral to our lives, and their advances continue at an exponential rate. Many believe that artificial intelligence equal or superior to human intelligence will happen in the not-too-distance future; some even think machine consciousness will follow. Futurist Richard Yonck argues that emotion, the first, most basic, and most natural form of communication, is at the heart of how we will soon work with and use computers. Instilling emotions into computers is the next leap in our centuries-old obsession with creating machines that replicate humans. But for every benefit this progress may bring to our lives, there is a possible pitfall. Emotion recognition could lead to advanced surveillance, and the same technology that can manipulate our feelings could become a method of mass control. And, as shown in movies like Her and Ex Machina, our society already holds a deep-seated anxiety about what might happen if machines could actually feel and break free from our control. Heart of the Machine is an exploration of the new and inevitable ways in which mankind and technology will interact. The paperback edition has a new foreword by Rana el Kaliouby, PhD, a pioneer in artificial emotional intelligence, as well as the cofounder and CEO of Affectiva, the acclaimed AI startup spun off from the MIT Media Lab.
