Download or read book The Environment written by Hofstra University and published by Praeger. This book was released on 1994-10-26 with total page 544 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Increasingly, the planet is threatened by a wide variety of real and potential complex environmental problems, including the warming of the earth, the loss of biodiversity, waste mismanagement, deforestation, desertification, hazardous waste disposal, acid precipitation, and pollution of many sorts. Although many of these problems are global in scope, they are sometimes best addressed at local levels where the relationships between cause and effect may be best understood. This interdisciplinary volume brings together leading environmentalists and public policy makers in science, law, economics, business, and government who explore the connections among global environmental issues and the local initiatives needed to address those issues. The volume begins with an overview of fundamental issues, including the problems of economic development and safe-guarding the environment. Air quality issues are examined next, followed by ocean and landbased sources of marine pollution, coastal preservation, water quality, nuclear power, environmental health and information, and a review of social and cultural perspectives. For those beginning their examination of environmental concerns, the volume provides an understandable introduction to the full spectrum of current issues; for the expert, the book offers an accurate view of current thinking on the problems.

Download or read book Atlantic Coast of New York Monitoring Program Cross Shore Profiles Quality Control Procedures Monumentation and Data Archiving written by and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Atlantic Coast of New York Monitoring Program, a cooperative effort between the U.S. Army Engineer District, New York, New York State Department of State, and New York Sea Grant, was initiated in 1995 to collect and assemble data on coastal processes along the south shore of Long Island. The program sponsored the collection of aerial photography and cross-shore topographic profiles from Coney Island to Montauk Point. For the purposes of organizing and classifying the profile data, the south shore has been divided into eight reaches: Coney Island, Rockaway Beach, Long Beach, Jones Beach, Fire Island, Westhampton, Ponds, and Montauk. The total number of profiles assembled in the ACNYMP databases is close to 3,000, of which 2,000 were long lines, 900 were short (wading depth), and less than three percent were rejected after quality inspections. The bulk of the profiles date from 1995 and 2001, with some earlier surveys included for the Coney Island and Rockaway reaches. Quality control and verification of the profiles proved to be a major effort, evolving into a five-part process: (a) Initial inspection at New York District; (b) Detailed plotting and screening at the Coastal and Hydraulics Laboratory (CHL) in Vicksburg; (c) Joint inspection of a CD-based display and viewing tool developed by a contractor; (d) Developing a consensus on questionable profiles at a workshop in 2001; and (e) final adjustments and corrections at CHL. These procedures will be used for future data collected on Long Island.

Book Living with Long Island s South Shore

Download or read book Living with Long Island s South Shore written by Larry McCormick and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 1984 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The south shore of Long Island, one of New York's greatest recreational assets, is receding at the rate of up to six feet per year. In many cases, efforts to halt this erosion actually have increased it. Buildings cone thought safely constructed back from high tidemarks today protrude far into the water. Even more, the number of homes an facilities built too close to the sea's edge has dramatically increased, making the south shore probably less ready to withstand a major storm than at the time of the cataclysmic hurricane of 1938. Thus, the question of what to do now to overcome and avoid these hazards takes on real urgency. Pointing to past mistakes, many Long Islanders insist that only by acting in an informed reasonable way can safe and environmentally sound development be possible for everyone.
