Book Equitable Land Use for Asian Infrastructure

Download or read book Equitable Land Use for Asian Infrastructure written by Piyush Tiwari and published by Asian Development Bank. This book was released on 2020-02-25 with total page 570 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Developing Asia's demand for high-quality, integrated infrastructure requires a steady but equitable supply of land. However, obtaining rights over land can be complicated by hurdles imposed by geography, settlement patterns, conflicting cultures, sociopolitical factors, and land use problems unique to each country. This timely volume identifies policies that can balance the rights and interests of first nations' peoples, informal settlers, and rural landowners against the development imperatives of land procurement for the greater public good. It provides instructive case studies of the state of Asian land registration, eminent domain, and redevelopment in situations of vulnerable communities. The collected chapters also propose and assess some promising models that might be customized to local conditions, such as long-term land leasing with options to buy. This is a companion volume to ADBI Press' pioneering series of titles (all available through Brookings Press)--Infrastructure for a Seamless Asia; Financing Infrastructure in Asia and the Pacific: Capturing Impacts and New Sources; and Principles of Infrastructure: Case Studies and Best Practices. This volume will be of interest to policymakers, practitioners, academics, and students.

Book excerpt: This book titled “Housing for All: Design, Construction andManagement” by A.K. Jain is a comprehensive assessment of the housing situationin India which not only traces the path taken by (governments so far but alsooutlines a roadmap for the future. The book begins with an overview of thehousing scenario in India. It discusses various housing programmes and draws adistinction between affordable housing and adequate housing. The book alsodraws particular attention to housing issues of special groups such as theelderly, disabled, homeless, migrant and transit workers, students and singlewomen. There is also a discussion on the issue of social and physicalinfrastructure. The book notes that housing units alone do not constitutehousing but infrastructure plays a critical role in the occupancy of housing. The question of reducing the cost of housing has been vexatious for long. Jaindeals with this issue in detail and suggests various low-cost technologies andhouse building systems for making housing more affordable. Another issue isthat of rental housing. Jain suggests that giving a boost to rental housingthrough a slew of measures can go a long way in making housing more accessibleand bring vacant housing into the market.

Book Urban Growth and Development in Asia

Download or read book Urban Growth and Development in Asia written by Graham P. Chapman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-12-12 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1999, this volume begins with a panoramic survey by Nigel Harris of the drama of Asian Urbanization, based on the inaugural plenary lecture he gave to the 5th Asian Urbanization Conference held in London. In the following chapters many experts and practitioners from different countries and cities provide a stimulating portrayal of the processes and outcomes of one of the greatest shifts of population (not just absolutely but proportionately as well) ever to have occurred in human history. Asia includes more than half the world’s population, but, apart from the Tiger economies and Japan, it is still overwhelmingly rural. In the last decade or so urbanization has really begun to take off and the shift of population to the cities represents one of the greatest population movements the planet has ever seen. By 2030 more than 50% of Asia’s population will be urban and between now and then more than 500 million people in Asia will have moved - looking for jobs, housing, food and water. They will be both part of a problem and most of the solution - building around them the cities they will live in.
