Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Outline of the Sciences of Heat and Electricity Tun work, which I here lay before the Public, constitutes an abridgement of the Lectures on Heat and Electricity, which I annually deliver in the College of Glasgow, as a necessary introduction to the elements of Chemistry; and which con stitute about a third part of my usual course. Many of the students have been in the habit of applying to me to point out to them a work in the English language in which they could find the different topics which I am in the habit of dis cussing and illustrating. But [found myself at a loss for any work exactly suited to the objects in view. We have many excellent books on Heat; but few or none of them embrace all the tepics, which the present state of chemistry renders it necessary for me to introduce into my Lectures. I was there fore under the necessity of mentioning a variety of books, some more, and some less easily accessible, and which, there. Fore, it was not always in the power of the students to procure when they wanted them. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Nature of Matter and Electricity

Download or read book The Nature of Matter and Electricity written by Daniel F. Comstock and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-07 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Nature of Matter and Electricity: An Outline of Modern Views Something must be said in explanation of the arrange ment of the book. It consists of two parts, the first giving a rapid survey of the entire subject, outlining the fundamental conceptions and emphasizing their most significant applications only, While the second retraces the same general field in a slower and less connected way, in order to consider details omitted in the more cursory treatment. The second part is divided into fifty six sections, each of which is numbered and referred to by its number in the appropriate connection in Part I. The book may be read in various ways according to the purposes or pleasure of the reader. If he is interested only to acquaint himself with the fundamentals of the modern theory through a quick, general sketch he may read Part I continuously and omit Part II altogether. If, on the other hand, he is already familiar with these essentials he may prefer to reverse the procedure and omit Part I. Part II although definitely divided by topics nevertheless forms a fairly continuous discussion. In general, however, the best method of using the book will probably be to read both of the sections in parallel, refer ring to each Section in Part II as its number appears in the text of the first part. It is believed that this method of study will encourage the type of attitude whichlis tequired to give the subject the greatest clearness in the reader's mind. It is obvious that the structure of Part II permits its ready use for purposes of Special reference, such as may arise, for example, in connection with school courses in elementary physics and chemistry. The basis of Part I is to be found in a series of articles contributed in 1911 by D. F. Comstock to the Science Conspectus, the journal of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Society of Arts. Somewhat to his surprise, there was a Wide demand from various sources for fur ther copies of these articles, and hence it seemed worth while to publish them in book form, together with a more complete discussion of the same subject. The articles have been amplified and brought up to date by their original author. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. It cannot, however, be too soon or too often impressed upon the beginner that an acquaintance with a number of facts does not constitute a scientific education, and that there is no royal road to learning other than that by which it is pursued for its own sake.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Energy and Civilization

Download or read book Energy and Civilization written by Vaclav Smil and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2018-11-13 with total page 564 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive account of how energy has shaped society throughout history, from pre-agricultural foraging societies through today's fossil fuel–driven civilization. "I wait for new Smil books the way some people wait for the next 'Star Wars' movie. In his latest book, Energy and Civilization: A History, he goes deep and broad to explain how innovations in humans' ability to turn energy into heat, light, and motion have been a driving force behind our cultural and economic progress over the past 10,000 years. —Bill Gates, Gates Notes, Best Books of the Year Energy is the only universal currency; it is necessary for getting anything done. The conversion of energy on Earth ranges from terra-forming forces of plate tectonics to cumulative erosive effects of raindrops. Life on Earth depends on the photosynthetic conversion of solar energy into plant biomass. Humans have come to rely on many more energy flows—ranging from fossil fuels to photovoltaic generation of electricity—for their civilized existence. In this monumental history, Vaclav Smil provides a comprehensive account of how energy has shaped society, from pre-agricultural foraging societies through today's fossil fuel–driven civilization. Humans are the only species that can systematically harness energies outside their bodies, using the power of their intellect and an enormous variety of artifacts—from the simplest tools to internal combustion engines and nuclear reactors. The epochal transition to fossil fuels affected everything: agriculture, industry, transportation, weapons, communication, economics, urbanization, quality of life, politics, and the environment. Smil describes humanity's energy eras in panoramic and interdisciplinary fashion, offering readers a magisterial overview. This book is an extensively updated and expanded version of Smil's Energy in World History (1994). Smil has incorporated an enormous amount of new material, reflecting the dramatic developments in energy studies over the last two decades and his own research over that time.
