Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Outline of General History, for the Use of Schools The Outline of General History has been prepared with especial regard to common schools. Several distinguished teachers, while expressing their kind approval of the Manuals of Ancient, Medieval and Modern History, by the same author, have regretted that these volumes are, in size and general scope, beyond the range of a majority of pupils. For many of these - so short is the time devoted to education - the most that the school can offer is a clear outline of the worlds history, affording a system of classification for future reading, or, at least, supplying needed intelligence concerning nations whose present movements constitute a chief interest of our times. The Manuals will be found useful as books of reference, and may well be used at each recitation to complete the impression received from the memorized lesson. It is believed that the Outline, from the simplicity of its arrangement and style, will present no difficulty to any pupil who is old enough to enter upon the study of General History; while the comprehensiveness of its plan may render it a sufficient guide to older students, whose time does not permit them to undertake a larger book. Book Outlines of General History

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines of General History: For the Use of Schools in British North America In the following work I have aimed at giving, of course in mere outline, a connected narrative of the principal facts in the History of the World. I have endeavoured to group them in such a manner as may help to indicate their relative importance, and show the bearing which one event, or age baa upon another. In my book entitled "The Great Events of History" I have described in succession the great landmarks of the Christian Centuries. The present volume takes a wider sweep, for it aims at filling up the gaps necessarily left in following out the plan of its predecessor, and thus presents a complete summary of General History. It is needless to enlarge upon the uses of such a work in small compass. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book A Manual of General History

Download or read book A Manual of General History written by John J. Anderson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-02 with total page 439 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of General History: Being an Outline History of the World From the Creation to the Present Time; Fully Illustrated With Maps; For the Use of Academies, High-Schools, and Families This work is designed to supply what the author believes to be a great want among school text-books at the present time – namely, a convenient manual of general history, with the necessary geographical and chronological accompaniments. The plan pursued corresponds with that of the author's popular school histories of the United States, the situation of the different places mentioned in the text being shown on maps, specially prepared for this work. These maps, as far as it was found possible in so elementary a work, also present the progressive changes in the various political divisions of which the history successively treats. In connection with them is given a system of map-questions, by which the pupil's attention is called to the exact location of places just previous to their occurrence in the history. The value of this plan has never been disputed by any teacher or student by whom it has been employed, experience clearly showing, that by associating events with places, both are more permanently impressed on the mind. The questions at the bottom of the pages are chiefly designed to draw attention to single facts, or to very brief statements; those at the end of the sections, called Review Questions, associate facts belonging to the same individual, place, or train of events, and are thus of a topical character. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Topical Outline of General History: Designed as a Guide to the General Reader and for Review Work in Schools Certain topics are inserted more for their literary interest than for their historic value. Such things belong to a general education; and are (often exceedingly useful in setting facts in a more pleasing light. For Obvious reasons the history of England and France is treated more fully than that of other nations. The history of the United States 1s not given except as connected with other peoples; because the book is intended for those who have finished the history of their own countrv. The too common fault of giving more space to Ancient than to Modern history has been avoided. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
