Book An Outline History of English Literature Classic Reprint

Download or read book An Outline History of English Literature Classic Reprint written by William Henry Hudson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-29 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Outline History of English Literature The purpose and plan of this little book may easily be gathered from the introductory chapter. Only a few words of preface, therefore, are needed. As I conceive it, a history of English literature, however brief, should still be a history of English literature in fact as well as in name and for a history something more is required than a list of authors and their books, and even than a chrono logically - arranged collection of biographical sketches and critical appreciations. It is true that a nation's literature is made up of the works of individual writers, and that for the ordinary purposes of study these writers may be detached from their surroundings and treated separately. But we cannot get a history of such literature unless and until each one has been put into his place in the sequence of things and considered with reference to that great body of literary production of which his work must now be regarded as a part. A history of English literature, then, must be interested primarily in English literature as a whole. Its chief aim should be to give a clear and systematic account, not of the achievements of successive great writers merely, as such, but of national changes and development. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introductory History of England My own view is that English History should be an inheritance of childhood; that its legends and its romance should grow into our thoughts from very early years, and should expand themselves with the expansion of our minds; that we should feel History and dream of it rather than learn it as a lesson. Happy is that boy who, having so grown up with the story of his country, can people the fields and lanes of his home with the figures of the past; can hear the clatter of Rupert's horsemen down his village street, and can picture the good monks catching baskets-full of trout in the stream (there were more trout in it before the Reformation) wherein he is failing to get a rise. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Illustrated History of England I have not hesitated to make Dr. Lingard my principal guide In about a third of the present volume; as in the history anterior to the House of Tudor I did not deem it always necessary to write immediately from the original authorities, though I have frequently consulted them. From the commencement Of the period alluded to, the inquirer after truth must draw from the original sources; for all the modern streams are turbid with re ligious and political prejudices. Book A Handbook in Outline of the Political History of England to 1887

This book was released on 2017-10-29 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Handbook in Outline of the Political History of England to 1887: Chronologically Arranged While a multitude of histories of persons and periods, excellently written, are put into the hands of young people, the dry bones of history are rather at a discount. The old unintelligent schoolroom drill, which involved learning strings of dates, had, with many disadvantages, at least some advantages. And a boy or girl may be better prepared to take an intelligent interest in history in the future if they know, so that they will never forget them, the dates of the Kings of England, of some leading events, and of the Prime Ministers from Walpole to the present time, than if they have been prematurely interested in the detail of special periods, to the exclusion of a knowledge of the general out lines. If the outlines have been insisted on and intelligently taught, the interest in private reading of history, for its own sake, will be increased rather than lessened.
