Book An Old Fashioned Senator

Download or read book An Old Fashioned Senator written by Louis A. Coolidge and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-08 with total page 708 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Old-Fashioned Senator: Orville Senator, Platt, of Connecticut; The Story of a Life Unselfishly Devoted to the Public Service Among all the public men whom the writer of this sketch has known in the course of an experience in Washington embracing twenty years, Senator Platt seems to have approached most nearly the perfect measure of disinterested service. That he should have been above any temptation to profit materially from his official place implies no special virtue, for that is fortunately a common attribute of Senators of the United States; but he possessed the rarer quality of disregard for contemporary applause or posthumous fame. He was ready to do each day's pressing duty conscientiously and unselfishly without regard to its effect upon his political fortune or personal prestige, and having the faculty of effective co-operation in an exceptional degree, he held the unbounded confidence of his associates. The impression created by watching his public conduct from year to year has been strengthened since this book was undertaken by a study of his private life from boyhood and by a perusal of the fragmentary correspondence which, through no design of his, survives him. His record from youth to age was one of uncalculating consistency - of harmonious intellectual and spiritual development. In the decision of vital questions of legislation he was for years an important and frequently a controlling factor. This book was released on 1986-10-15 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: • Choice 1987 Outstanding Academic Book This book examines the early years of the Cuban Republic, launched in 1902 after the war with Spain. Although no longer a colony, the country was still hobbled by continuing dependence on and exploitation from a foreign power. Perez shows how U.S. armed intervention in Cuba in 1898 and subsequent military occupation revitalized elements of the colonial system that would serve imperialist interests during independence. The concessions of the Platt Amendment in 1903 became the principal instrument for U.S. expansion in Cuba. The U.S. then gained control over resources and markets.

Download or read book In Their Own Best Interest written by Lars Schoultz and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2018-08-06 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the William M. LeoGrande Prize For over a century, the United States has sought to improve the behavior of the peoples of Latin America. Perceiving their neighbors to the south as underdeveloped and unable to govern themselves, U.S. policy makers have promoted everything from representative democracy and economic development to oral hygiene. But is improvement a progressive impulse to help others, or realpolitik in pursuit of a superpower’s interests? “In this subtle and searing critique of U.S. efforts to ‘uplift’ Latin America, Lars Schoultz challenges us to question the fundamental tenets of the development industry that became entrenched in the U.S. foreign policy bureaucracy over the last century.” —Piero Gleijeses, author of Visions of Freedom “In this masterful work, Lars Schoultz provides a companion and follow-up to his classic Beneath the United States...A necessary and rewarding read for scholars and students of U.S. foreign policy and inter-American relations.” —Renata Keller, The Americas

Book Beneath the United States

Download or read book Beneath the United States written by Lars Schoultz and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 1998-06-15 with total page 500 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this sweeping history of United States policy toward Latin America, Lars Schoultz shows that the United States has always perceived Latin America as a fundamentally inferior neighbor, unable to manage its affairs and stubbornly underdeveloped. This perception of inferiority was apparent from the beginning. John Quincy Adams, who first established diplomatic relations with Latin America, believed that Hispanics were lazy, dirty, nasty...a parcel of hogs. In the early nineteenth century, ex-President John Adams declared that any effort to implant democracy in Latin America was as absurd as similar plans would be to establish democracies among the birds, beasts, and fishes. Drawing on extraordinarily rich archival sources, Schoultz, one of the country's foremost Latin America scholars, shows how these core beliefs have not changed for two centuries. We have combined self-interest with a civilizing mission--a self-abnegating effort by a superior people to help a substandard civilization overcome its defects. William Howard Taft felt the way to accomplish this task was to knock their heads together until they should maintain peace, while in 1959 CIA Director Allen Dulles warned that the new Cuban officials had to be treated more or less like children. Schoultz shows that the policies pursued reflected these deeply held convictions. While political correctness censors the expression of such sentiments today, the actions of the United States continue to assume the political and cultural inferiority of Latin America. Schoultz demonstrates that not until the United States perceives its southern neighbors as equals can it anticipate a constructive hemispheric alliance.

Book Historical Dictionary of the Spanish American War

Download or read book Historical Dictionary of the Spanish American War written by Donald H. Dyal and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 1996-04-16 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Foreshadowing the twentieth-century experience, the Spanish American War was America's first modern foreign war. Catapulting the United States into an international world power, the war had lasting international implications. Besides America's acquisition of Puerto Rico, the Philippines, Hawaii, and Guam, the war led the United States to take to the international stage, confronting Germany and Japan (foreshadowing the conflict of World War II), and creating a diplomatic bridge between Great Britain and the United States. For Spain, the 1898-1899 conflict was the death knell of empire, which led to a national crisis culminating in the Spanish Civil War. This volume provides easily accessible information on the naval and army operations, Spanish operations, and the political background to the military events, with an emphasis on future foreign affairs. The Spanish American War is seminal to an understanding of twentieth-century U.S. foreign relations—in Cuba, the Pacific, especially Japan, and with Great Britain. It is also central to an understanding of twentieth-century Spain. U.S. military history also requires an understanding of amphibious operations, naval and army reform, deployment command and control, and interservice cooperation as reflected in the Spanish American War. This book provides a quick reference to what was once called this splendid little war.

Book Autobiography of Mark Twain Volume 3

Download or read book Autobiography of Mark Twain Volume 3 written by Mark Twain and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2015-10-15 with total page 787 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The surprising final chapter of a great American life. When the first volume of Mark Twain’s uncensored Autobiography was published in 2010, it was hailed as an essential addition to the shelf of his works and a crucial document for our understanding of the great humorist’s life and times. This third and final volume crowns and completes his life’s work. Like its companion volumes, it chronicles Twain's inner and outer life through a series of daily dictations that go wherever his fancy leads. Created from March 1907 to December 1909, these dictations present Mark Twain at the end of his life: receiving an honorary degree from Oxford University; railing against Theodore Roosevelt; founding numerous clubs; incredulous at an exhibition of the Holy Grail; credulous about the authorship of Shakespeare’s plays; relaxing in Bermuda; observing (and investing in) new technologies. The Autobiography’s "Closing Words" movingly commemorate his daughter Jean, who died on Christmas Eve 1909. Also included in this volume is the previously unpublished "Ashcroft-Lyon Manuscript," Mark Twain’s caustic indictment of his "putrescent pair" of secretaries and the havoc that erupted in his house during their residency. Fitfully published in fragments at intervals throughout the twentieth century, Autobiography of Mark Twain has now been critically reconstructed and made available as it was intended to be read. Fully annotated by the editors of the Mark Twain Project, the complete Autobiography emerges as a landmark publication in American literature. Download or read book The Republican Command written by Horace Samuel Merrill and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2021-11-21 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This powerful book reminds us of the enormous power the nation accords its political leaders and how in the significant period, 1897–1913, these leaders failed to meet their responsibilities. Their inadequacies, the authors feel, delayed the administration of justice for all citizens, neglected the Negro, and seriously impaired the future effectiveness of their own once viable, successful, and justly proud Republican Party. The authors follow the maneuvers of McKinley, Roosevelt, Taft, Senators Aldrich, Platt, Allison, and Spooner, and House Speaker "Uncle" Joe Cannon as they juggled pressing domestic questions, perpetuating themselves in power without really confronting the public need. From the outset, when the party came into power in 1897 under remarkably auspicious circumstances, until it met final defeat at the hands of Woodrow Wilson in 1912, the Republican leaders laid a foundation by default for the Democratic return to power. Their neglect of major national problems afforded the Democrats a golden opportunity to appropriate those issues as their own.
