Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An Old English Home and Its Dependencies by S. Baring-Gould is a quaint and cozy tale about an old lady who lives in a house that is falling apart. This novel is an affectionate look at the variety of homes in England, squatters, and other owners of dilapidated homes. Excerpt: "When we reached that part of the road to Nymet Rowland where their field touched, we stopped, and in a moment some very angry, excited women and children rushed out. I bade them be quiet and hear what I had to say and then told them that Lord ---- had asked me to bring these comforts to the sick man and that I was come to offer him my services in his illness. They were instantly pacified and pleased, and begged me to come to what they called the farm—a place with half a roof and three walls."

Book Comparative Syntax of Old English and Old Icelandic

Download or read book Comparative Syntax of Old English and Old Icelandic written by Graeme Davis and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2006 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Study of the syntax of Old English and Old Icelandic has for long been dominated by the impressions of early philologists. Their assertions that these languages were «free» in their word-order were for many years unchallenged. Only within the last two decades has it been demonstrated that the word-order of each shows regular patterns which approach the status of rules, and which may be precisely described. This book takes the subject one step further by offering a comparison of the syntax of Old English and Old Icelandic, the two best-preserved Old Germanic languages. Overwhelmingly the two languages show the same word-order patterns - as do the other Old Germanic languages, at least as far as can be determined from the fragments which have survived. It has long been recognised that Old English and Old Icelandic have a high proportion of common lexis and very similar morphology, yet the convention has been to emphasise the differences between the two as representatives respectively of the West and North sub-families of Germanic. The argument of this book is that the similar word-order of the two should instead lead us to stress the similarities between the two languages. Old English and Old Icelandic were sufficiently close to be mutually comprehensible. This thesis receives copious support from historical and literary texts. Our understanding of the Old Germanic world should be modified by the concept of a common «Northern Speech» which provided a common Germanic ethnic identity and a platform for the free flow of cultural ideas.

Book excerpt: But access to this bedroom became difficult, as the stairs, exposed to rain, rotted, and she wascompelled to ascend and descend by an improvised ladder. After a while the ladder collapsed. Then the old lady descended for good and all, and took up her abode on the ground floor-kitchen, and parlour, and dining-room, and bedroom all in one."And terr'ble warm and comfortable it be," said she, when the roof fell in bodily, and coveredthe floor overhead. But when the walls were exposed, rain and frost told on them, and also on the beam endssustaining the floor, and the next stage was that one side of the floor gave way wholly."Tes best as it be," said the old woman; "now the rain runs off more suant."But in falling the floor blocked the fireplace and the doorway. The consequences are-now wecome to the present condition of affairs-that the old lady has had to do without a fire for certainlythree winters, amongst others that bitter one of 1893-4, and her only means of egress and ingress isthrough the window. Of that not one half of the panes are whole; the gaps are stopped with rags.

Book Writing the Map of Anglo Saxon England

Download or read book Writing the Map of Anglo Saxon England written by Nicholas Howe and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2008-01-01 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eminent Anglo-Saxonist Nicholas Howe explores how the English, in the centuries before the Norman Conquest, located themselves both literally and imaginatively in the world. His elegantly written study focuses on Anglo-Saxon representations of place as revealed in a wide variety of texts in Latin and Old English, as well as in diagrams of holy sites and a single map of the known world found in British Library, Cotton Tiberius B v. The scholar's investigations are supplemented and aided by insights gleaned from his many trips to physical sites. The Anglo-Saxons possessed a remarkable body of geographical knowledge in written rather than cartographic form, Howe demonstrates. To understand fully their cultural geography, he considers Anglo-Saxon writings about the places they actually inhabited and those they imagined. He finds in Anglo-Saxon geographic images a persistent sense of being far from the center of the world, and he discusses how these migratory peoples narrowed that distance and developed ways to define themselves.
