Excerpt: ...Winchester and Snyder rifles had destroyed this long before the time of the Austrian occupation. Upon the other side of Dubovatz, the valley begins to rise rapidly and to contract until it nearly forms a pass, bordered on the left by the Dubova Mountains; on the right, by the Gradatz; the latter a bold, rocky mountain of Herzegovinan type, with a wealth of caves and jagged cliffs. The township of the same name is pressed into a narrow angle to the right of the road. After a mile and a half, the valley widens again; another rivulet, the Krupatz, coming Turkish watchhouse. from the south-east, flows into the Zujevina; and, after a short bend, the basin of Pasaritsh lies before us, surrounded by picturesque hills, and upon whose western border the township of Pasaritsh itself stands, in the midst of agricultural fields. At the military station here a Roman tombstone has been preserved, which is about two metres high and four wide; a bust of the dead in a toga, between Corinthian pillars, which support a triangular gable decorated with the head of a ram and a dolphin. Between similar pillars, below the portrait, is an inscription already entirely obliterated. The bare mass of the Hranitzava-Planina rises menacingly in the background six thousand two hundred metres above the level of the sea, a mountain celebrated from its magnificent appearance. The valley is shut in by the mountain ridge of Vilovatz; and, leaving the 2ujevina, our way now lay over this ridge, and down the other side to Tartshin, where we changed horses for the first time. A beautiful sylvan idyl. At Tartshin we crossed a smaller brook, which flows from the south directly northwards. Upon the left, we constantly saw the Hranitzava-Planina. Our road lay to the south-west, ...

Book The a to Z of Bosnia and Herzegovina

Download or read book The a to Z of Bosnia and Herzegovina written by Ante Cuvalo and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2010-04 with total page 506 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Diversity has always been at the heart of Bosnia and Herzegovina's character; even its dual name and physical geography display a particular heterogeneity. The medieval Bosnian state never enjoyed lasting political and ideological unity as its feudal, regional, and religious rifts pulled at the country's seams. Furthermore, because of its location and by a quirk of history, three major world religious and cultural traditions (Catholicism, Islam, and Orthodoxy) became cohabitants in this small Balkan country. Recently, the rebirth of its statehood has been exceptionally bloody and its diversity has been shaken. Even 11 years after the guns were silenced, the country is still under the "benevolent" protection of the international community, whose officials are keeping the state-building process in perpetual suspense, with no final result in sight. The A to Z of Bosnia and Herzegovina sheds light on the uncertain situation Bosnia and Herzegovina faces, while providing essential background information. This is accomplished through a chronology, an introduction, a bibliography, and more than 300 cross-referenced dictionary entries on individual topics spanning Bosnia and Herzegovina's political, economic, religious, and social system along with short biographies on important figures.

Book Through Bosnia and the Herzegovina

Download or read book Through Bosnia and the Herzegovina written by Arthur Evans and published by Cosimo, Inc.. This book was released on 2007-04-01 with total page 509 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In July of 1875, as Arthur Evans and his brother Lewis made plans to travel through Bosnia-Herzegovina on foot, revolution came to the Balkans. By the time the two Brits arrived a month later, full insurrection was underway and they found themselves not only travelers in a remote, unexplored land, but witnesses to history. Rich in its reflections on Bosnian culture, landscape, and history, Evans' account serves also as a window into one of the country's most important social upheavals. Part travelogue, part first-person journalism, this is living, breathing history at its best. Best known for discovering and naming the Bronze Age civilization of the Minoans, British archaeologist SIR ARTHUR JOHN EVANS (1851-1941) also wrote Cretan Pictographs and Prae-Phoenician Script, The Mycenaean Tree and Pillar Cult, and The Palace of Minos.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1964, this volume focuses on the history of England's relations with the Near East from the death of Canning until the day when Disraeli brought back 'peace with honour' from Berlin. The period begins with the British fleet's destruction of Turkish sea-power at Naarino and ends with its protection of the Turkish capital against Russia. The aim is not a study of diplomatic or naval history, but a general narrative in which these speical features are found side by side with a study of Oriental institutions and of Balkan nationalities.
