Book An Occurrence based Habitat Model for the Ord s Kangaroo Rat Dipodomys Ordii in Alberta

Download or read book An Occurrence based Habitat Model for the Ord s Kangaroo Rat Dipodomys Ordii in Alberta written by Darren J. Bender and published by Alberta Sustainable Resource Development. This book was released on 2010 with total page 17 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Ord's kangaroo rat (Dipodomys ordii) is considered an endangered species, and is the only kangaroo rat to occur in Canada. The Recovery Plan for Ord's kangaroo rat in Alberta identifies a number of activities necessary for recovery, including identification of distribution, habitat requirements, and essential habitat. This report presents information on the current distribution and habitat requirements for the species across Alberta, using statistical modeling to identify key habitat features from the Ord's kangaroo rat occurrences observed in two years of standard population monitoring. Two goals were intended for the study: to produce a habitat model that could estimate the distribution of the kangaroo rat habitat across its range and predict the species' occurrence in Alberta; and to validate the model using population monitoring data obtained in the subsequent years with reporting on the predictive capacity of the model.--Document.

Book Monitoring Protocol for the Ord s Kangaroo Rat

Download or read book Monitoring Protocol for the Ord s Kangaroo Rat written by Darren J. Bender and published by Fish & Wildlife Service. This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 29 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Ord's kangaroo rat is a nocturnal rodent that occurs in Canada as a northern population that is geographically isolated from the southern conspecifics. In Alberta, it occurs in the vacinity of the Middle Sand Hills north of Medicine Hat. This population of kangaroo rats is currently recognized as Endangered due to extreme fluctuations such that the population crashes to fewer than 1000 animals in harsh winters. The Alberta Recovery Plan for Ord's kangaroo rat calls for standardized population monitoring as a high priority recovery activity. The purpose is to establish a long-term database that supports defensible, inter-annual comparisons of distribution, relative abundance, and survival. This document provides a detailed population monitoring protocol to serve as a guide for implementation of long-term, standardized monitoring for Ord's kangaroo rat in Alberta.--Document.

Book Translocation Protocol for the Ord s Kangaroo Rat Dipodmys Ordii

Download or read book Translocation Protocol for the Ord s Kangaroo Rat Dipodmys Ordii written by Darren J. Bender and published by Alberta Environment. This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 19 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Ord's kangaroo rat is a rare, nocturnally-active rodent distributed through the Middle Sand Hills and surrounding sandy regions of southeast Alberta. Research has identified the location of habitats for the Ord's kangaroo rat in Alberta, including a number of isolated patches of natural habitat. This report provides recommended methods for translocating Ord's kangaroo rats in Alberta based on the successes and limitations observed in previous studies, with particular consideration of the unique properties of the Alberta population. This report also describes knowledge gaps and recommended research that should be undertaken to determine whether Ord's kangaroo rat translocations can be used in Alberta to mitigate population decline and local extirpation of isolated habitats.--Document.

This book was released on 2005-01-01 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alberta species at risk recovery plans are prepared under the supervision of the Fish and Wildlife Division, Alberta Sustainable Resource Development. The Ord's kangaroo rat (Dipodomys ordii) is a small, nocturnal rodent that is highly adapted to survival in arid environments. In 2002, the Ord's kangaroo rat was listed as endangered under the Wildlife Act in Alberta. The goal of this recovery plan is to ensure a viable, naturally self-sustaining population of Ord's kangaroo rat in Alberta so that this species is no longer at risk of extinction in the province.
