Book An Observation of a Large Sudden Ionospheric Total Electron Content Decrease

Download or read book An Observation of a Large Sudden Ionospheric Total Electron Content Decrease written by J. A. Klobuchar and published by . This book was released on 1964 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Polarization determinations of signals transmitted from Fort Monmouth, New Jersey to Hamilton, Massachusetts via the moon were made during the winter of 1961-1962 to determine changes in ionospheric columnar electron content. On 10 January 1962, a geomagnetically disturbed day, during the 1030-1200 EST period, the columnar content instead of increasing as it normally does on quiet days, fell rapidly by approximately fifty percent. Since only one frequency was used and no receiver was operating at the Fort t Monmouth site, only a relative columnar content change along the sum of the transmitting and receiving ionospheric legs could be measured. The sub-ionospheric latitude along both legs of the path moved northward by about 1.5 degree during this period indicating a large latitude gradient in columnar content. Large latitude gradients in columnar electron content during geomagnetically disturbed periods have been reported from satellite Faraday analysis and topside soundings, but no change of this order of magnitude has previously been observed. Book ATS Observations of Sudden Increases of Total Electron Content Induced by EUV and X ray Burst of Solar Flares

Download or read book ATS Observations of Sudden Increases of Total Electron Content Induced by EUV and X ray Burst of Solar Flares written by Richard Frank Donnelly and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ATS-satellite observations of sudden increases in total electron content (SITECs) produced by extreme-ultraviolet (EUV) and X-ray bursts of solar flares are presented quantitatively and interpreted qualitatively. Large SITECs for the white-light flare of July 4, 1974, and for the large flares on July 5, September 10, and September 19, 1974, are illustrated. The time rate of change of total electron content dN (subscript)T/dt was directly compared with SFD (Sudden Frequency Deviations) measurements. The ATS-6 dN(subscript)T/dt measurements are essentially transionospheric SFD measurements. The main difference with respect to ground-based SFD measurements is that, in addition to the 100 to 200 km altitude range where ionospheric electron loss rates are high, the ATS-6 measurements also observe the low loss-rate F2 region. Because of this low ionization loss rate, dN(subscript)T/dt includes more of the slow radiation effects and proceeds to a negative decay phase much later than the ground-based SFDs.

Book Atmospheric Attenuation Model 1964 in the Ultraviolet Visible and Infrared Regions for Altitudes to 50 Km

Download or read book Atmospheric Attenuation Model 1964 in the Ultraviolet Visible and Infrared Regions for Altitudes to 50 Km written by L. Elterman and published by . This book was released on 1964 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A model of a clear standard atmosphere, for determing attenuation in the ultraviolet, the visible, and the infrared windows, is derived. The derivation is based on a Rayleigh atmosphere combined with aerosol and ozone components. The format of the model is a series of tabulations for 22 wavelengths with Rayleigh, aerosol, and ozone components arrayed at kilometer intervals to an altitude of 50 kilometers. Exploratory calculations pertaining to horizontal, vertical, and slant-path transmission from sea level, transmission between two altitudes and transmission to space are readily made from the tabulations. Because of its more extensive coverage and improved computational programming, this report, including the tabulations, fully replaces the earlier publication, 'A Model of a Clear Standard Atmosphere for Attenuation in the Visible Region and IYNFRARED Windows, ' by this author.
