Download or read book An Nasher written by Paul Gillcrist and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2001-07 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 1993 time-frame, after the end of the cold war, a group of disenfranchised former leaders of the Soviet Union seek to undermine the current Russian Federation power structure and embarrass the United States. Using Libyan President Moammar Khadaffi as their foil, they arrange for the covert transfer of 24 specially configured Soviet SU-27K fighters to a secret base in Southern Libya. The fighters are the entire inventory of carrier versions of the Sukhoi fighter with folding wings, tailhooks and super engines that had been intended for the first real Russian aircraft carrier, Tiblisi. The key figures in the intrigue are a Russian test pilot, Vladimir Chilin, the test pilot who conducted the carrier tests on the Tiblisi as well as the instructor who trains the Libyan special squadron; Abou Wattaz, the leading Libyan fighter pilot; Abou Nidal, the world's most deadly hitman and a U.S. Navy fighter aircrew from the U.S.S. Abraham Lincoln. The climax of the story occurs in the air over the Mediterranean Sea off the coast of Libya. The Navy aircrew, Commander Jay Blakeley and his radar intercept officer, Lieutenant Frank Brownley lead a flight of F-14s into a pitched aerial engagement with the entire special Libyan squadron. It is clash of high-technology fighters and aerial weapons in an action-packed engagement "furball", with devastating results for the Libyans. Vladimir Chilin, who is an airborne witness to the disaster, avoids an assassination attempt by his Libyan wingman and makes the difficult choice of defecting to the American aircraft carrier.
Download or read book Convinced written by Jack Nasher and published by Berrett-Koehler Publishers. This book was released on 2018-11-13 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Competence does not speak for itself! You can't simply display it; you have to draw people's attention to it. World-renowned negotiation and deception detection expert, business professor, and mentalist Jack Nasher offers effective, proven techniques to convince others that we are talented, trustworthy, and yes, even brilliant. Nasher offers the example of Joshua Bell, possibly the world's most famous violinist. In January 2007, at rush hour, he stepped into a Washington, DC, subway station, dressed like any street busker, and began to play a $4,000,000 Stradivarius. It was part of an experiment staged by a journalist of the Washington Post, who expected Bell's skill alone to attract an immense, awed crowd. But Bell was generally ignored, and when he stopped, nobody applauded. He made $34.17. The good news is that you don't have to accept obscurity: you can positively affect others' perception of your talent. Whether you're looking for work, giving an important presentation, seeking clients or customers for your business, or vying for a promotion, Nasher explains how to use techniques such as expectation management, verbal and nonverbal communication, the Halo Effect, competence framing, and the power of nonconformity to gain control of how others perceive you. Competence is the most highly valued professional trait. But it's not enough to be competent, you have to convey your competence. With Nasher's help you can showcase your expertise, receive the recognition you deserve, and achieve lasting success.
Download or read book An Audience of Artists written by Catherine Craft and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2012-05-30 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An Audience of Artists turns this time line for the postwar New York art world on its head, presenting a new pedigree for these artistic movements. Drawing on an array of previously unpublished material, Catherine Craft reveals that Neo-Dada, far from being a reaction to Abstract Expressionism, actually originated at the heart of that movement's concerns about viewers, originality, and artists' debts to the past and one another. Furthermore, she argues, the original Dada movement was not incompatible with Abstract Expressionism. In fact, Dada provided a vital historical reference for artists and critics seeking to come to terms with the radical departure from tradition that Abstract Expressionism seemed to represent. Tracing the activities of artists such as Robert Motherwell, Barnett Newman, and Jackson Pollock alongside Marcel Duchamp's renewed embrace of Dada in the late 1940s, Craft explores the challenges facing artists trying to work in the wake of a destructive world war and the paintings, objects, writings, and installations that resulted from their efforts."--Jacket.
Download or read book Where We Find Ourselves written by Margaret Sartor and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2018-11-08 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Self-taught photographer Hugh Mangum was born in 1877 in Durham, North Carolina, as its burgeoning tobacco economy put the frontier-like boomtown on the map. As an itinerant portraitist working primarily in North Carolina and Virginia during the rise of Jim Crow, Mangum welcomed into his temporary studios a clientele that was both racially and economically diverse. After his death in 1922, his glass plate negatives remained stored in his darkroom, a tobacco barn, for fifty years. Slated for demolition in the 1970s, the barn was saved at the last moment--and with it, this surprising and unparalleled document of life at the turn of the twentieth century, a turbulent time in the history of the American South. Hugh Mangum's multiple-image, glass plate negatives reveal the open-door policy of his studio to show us lives marked both by notable affluence and hard work, all imbued with a strong sense of individuality, self-creation, and often joy. Seen and experienced in the present, the portraits hint at unexpected relationships and histories and also confirm how historical photographs have the power to subvert familiar narratives. Mangum's photographs are not only images; they are objects that have survived a history of their own and exist within the larger political and cultural history of the American South, demonstrating the unpredictable alchemy that often characterizes the best art--its ability over time to evolve with and absorb life and meaning beyond the intentions or expectations of the artist.

Download or read book Fathers True written by Chuck Mansfield and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2023-02-23 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When the author’s son John suggested he write a book about fatherhood, he thought, with all the books on fatherhood, who needs another? He concluded, “Perhaps I do.” While the book is indeed about fatherhood and fathers, it also tells of other fitting paternal exemplars – father figures – who may not have had children of their own but nonetheless have or had the right stuff as men and mentors. A central tenet herein is that good strong fathers are essential to the character building and moral fiber of our young and the very fabric and future of our currently downward-spiraling society. One reviewer writes, “...the testimonials describing the influence for good one person can have over another, be he parent, son, friend, teacher, comrade, barber, sports coach, or even our children are remarkable. The vignettes sometimes evoke amusement, sometimes tears, but lift the spirit and stay in the memory.”

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: PRAISE FOR CHUCK MANSFIELDS NO KIDS, NO MONEY AND A CHEVY A Politically Incorrect Memoir A New Book by a Former Marine and Vietnam War Veteran Of Chuck Mansfields No Kids, No Money and a Chevy award-winning novelist and essayist Cynthia Ozick writes, "Chuck Mansfield is a first-rate writer of wit, charm, and passion, who applies a clarifying integrity to whatever subject his fine mind alights on. Having been schooled in excellence, he holds it as his lifelong standard; and he is, besides, an embodiment of everything that is meant by the term American Hero - courtly, brave, generous, and in love with family, faith, and country. To read his memoir is to rejoice in the warm presence of human devotion and intellect." New York literary agency executive Jack Scovil calls No Kids, No Money and a Chevy "a fascinating read." He writes, Mansfield "come(s) through clearly as a very remarkable man who commits to life and the task before him with passion and dedication and integrity. Chaminade (High School)s reaction to the WTC tragedy (indeed the ethos of the whole Chaminade experience) was especially moving, and individual tributes to some of (Mansfields) fellow Marines quite affecting and inspiring. Some of (his) viewpoints and assessments couldnt be more timely; (his) critique of business practices fits right in with what were learning about the frauds at Enron and Global Crossing and (his) judgments of some societal trends are also in keeping with the climate of public opinion that has produced the current successes of OReilly and Buchanan. (His) litany of facts about the Vietnam War deserves to be widely circulated." Retired English professor and writer Robert P. Meikle writes that "everything in this book is the unfiltered (Mansfield): the impeccable use of language, the meticulous attention to detail, the total recall of dates Some are more successful than others when it comes to taking a really honest look at themselves. The trick is to translate that self-awareness onto the written page. It is that translation that (Mansfield does) so successfully. This is a guy who not only has had a good life, but who APPRECIATES all that he has had in (it), especially when it comes to family and friends. Thats an important distinction for that unknown reader to pick up on." New York attorney Paul G. Burns has written, "(Mansfields) work shares a problem common to each and every book that I totally and thoroughly enjoyed reading: it had a last page. an outstanding read!!" Rear Admiral Paul T. Gillcrist, USN (Ret.), former Assistant Deputy Chief of Naval Operations (Air Warfare), aircraft carrier fighter pilot and author, says "I was enormously impressed" The Vietnam Era section in Mansfields book, fully a third of the work, "represents the kind of personal history that needs to be told about all wars but about Vietnam particularly." According to P. Henry Mueller, retired Citigroup executive, author and Marine veteran of World War II, "A page-turner," No Kids, No Money and a Chevy "is hard to put down. The Vietnam portion is in the excellent style of Micheners Tales of the South Pacific. The character descriptions throughout the book are well done." The book is "packed with interest, and (the) politically incorrect views add an important and refreshing edge. Not only that, (Mansfield) present(s) (his) views in an instructive way." CEO and business owner Donald J. Steinert says, "I was most impressed with the way I am able to relate to your book as a former Marine Vietnam veteran." This book was released on 2006-07-06 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of America's leading landscape architects, Peter Walker has created a variety of significant landscapes worldwide, including joint projects with architects I. M. Pei, Norman Foster, and Renzo Piano. Walker's broad field of practice includes urban design and planning and the creation of landscapes ranging in size from parks and university campuses to corporate headquarters, plazas, and private gardens. Peter Walker and Partners / Nasher Sculpture Center Garden focuses on his garden in Dallas, Texas, a set of "outdoor galleries" showcasing the Nasher collection of modern and contemporary sculpture. A museum without a roof, the garden, with its subtle balance of art and nature, is also a serene urban park, whose beauty perfectly complements Renzo Piano's design for the center. Peter Walker's informative sketches, drawings, and plans, along with photographs of the final design, reveal the delicate balance between art, culture, and context at the heart of the Nasher Foundation Sculpture Garden. Source Books in Landscape Architecture, produced in collaboration with the Knowlton School of Architecture at Ohio State University, provide detailed documentation of important new projects.
