Book A Dictionary and Glossary for the Irish Literary Revival

Download or read book A Dictionary and Glossary for the Irish Literary Revival written by Richard Wall and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1995 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work is intended to provide the general reader, as well as the specialist, with access to an important but neglected element of Irish Literature in English: its vocabulary and idioms. Over seventy years have elapsed since the establishment of an independent Irish state, but for complex socio-political reasons there is, as yet, no dictionary of Irish-English to which readers can turn for assistance when they encounter unfamiliar words and phrases or apparently familiar words used unconventionally by Irish writers. The focus of the work is the writers of the Irish Literary Revival, but their use of Irish-English is so extensive that the work is relevant to the entire field of Irish literature in English from its beginnings in the seventeenth century to the present. Almost all aspects of Ireland and Irish life over the past 400 years are mirrored here: agricultural, economic, educational, linguistic, military, political, religious and social history as well as animals, emigration, drink, food, folklore, geography, music, mythology, plants, sports and even the mercurial Irish weather.

Book An Anglo Irish Dialect Glossary for Joyce s Works

Download or read book An Anglo Irish Dialect Glossary for Joyce s Works written by Richard Wall and published by Colin Smythe. This book was released on 1986 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work is intended to provide the general reader as well as the specialist with access to an important but neglected element of Joyce's style: the Anglo-Irish (Hiberno-English) dialect. Although some commentaries and editions of individual works include glossaries on a few terms, this is the first full scale reference work of its kind. It will be of use to others besides Joyceans also because Joyce's use of the dialect is so extensive that most examples a reader is likely to encounter elsewhere are identified and explained here.

Book Definitions of Irishness in the Library of Ireland Literary Anthologies

Download or read book Definitions of Irishness in the Library of Ireland Literary Anthologies written by Anne MacCarthy and published by Reimagining Ireland. This book was released on 2012 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This detailed study explores the significance of the 'Library of Ireland', a book series originated in the 1840s by the Young Irelanders Thomas Davis and Charles Gavan Duffy. Focusing on the literary anthologies and literary histories published in this series, the author demonstrates how they attempted to articulate a new national identity for Irish readers based on Young Ireland ideas. Despite the vast amount of scholarly work on Irish nationalism and literature, very little attention has hitherto been paid to the 'Library of Ireland' series. This book recovers the fundamental role played by the series in the creation of a sense of Irish identity, and also examines the publications within the wider theoretical context of anthology studies. It is an original and highly stimulating contribution to the literary and cultural history of nineteenth-century Ireland.

In another realm known as Philadelphia, a young woman has just discovered she possesses a treasure of her own... When Breen Kelly was a girl, her father would tell her stories of magical places. But one day she stumbles upon a shocking discovery: her mother has been hiding an investment account in her name. It has been funded by her long-lost father—and it’s worth nearly four million dollars. This newfound fortune would be life-changing for anyone. But little does Breen know that when she uses some of the money to journey to Ireland, it will unlock mysteries she couldn’t have imagined. Here, she will begin to understand why she kept seeing that silver-haired, elusive man, why she imagined his voice in her head saying Come home, Breen Siobhan. It’s time you came home.
