Book Modeling of Strain Rate Effects on Clay in Simple Shear

Download or read book Modeling of Strain Rate Effects on Clay in Simple Shear written by Byoung Chan Jung and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of this research is the development of a new constitutive model to describe the behavior of cohesive soils under time dependent loading. In the work presented here, the modified SIMPLE DSS model is expanded to account for the effects of strain rate on clays in simple shear conditions. The response of clay soils is highly dependent on the rate of strain for both effective stress path and stress-strain behavior. The undrained shear strength is strongly influenced by strain rate both in monotonic and cyclic simple shear tests. Nevertheless, the few available experimental results cover a very limited range of loading conditions and rates. The existing literature established that the soil response display a unique relationship between shear strength and log scale of strain rate. To include the effects of strain rate, the modified simple effective stress model starts with two assumptions: (1) a specific shear strength corresponds to a specific strain rate in a unique relation; and (2) the effect of strain rate does not change the failure envelope. The proposed model is developed from the original SIMPLE DSS model, based on an effective stress formulation in a reduced stress space, and utilizing concepts related to the framework of bounding surface plasticity. The proposed model evaluation was carried out comparing model simulations with results of simple shear tests on Boston Blue Clay and San Francisco Young Bay Mud. The model capability is useful especially in strain rate dependent responses for both monotonic and cyclic behavior, including irregular loading and step-changed condition. It was found that undrained shear strength in simple shear is directly related to strain rate effects and the responses in cyclic test show the more rate dependent behavior than those in monotonic test. The proposed model is able to predict the increase in undrained shear strength for higher strain rate.

Book Residual Strength of Clay and Clay shales by Rotation Shear Tests

Download or read book Residual Strength of Clay and Clay shales by Rotation Shear Tests written by Daniel P. LaGatta and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objectives of this investigation were to develop a rotation shear machine to measure the residual shear strength (constant shearing resistance at which material undergoes continuous deformation under a constant state of effective stress) of clays and clay-shales; investigate testing errors; and measure residual shear strengths of representative types of highly plastic clays and clay-shales. In the rotation shear test, torque is applied to the bottom of the specimen and two force transducers measure the couple necessary to maintain the upper half of the specimen stationary. Disc-shaped or annular specimens with thicknesses from 0.1 to 2.5 cm and outside diameters of 7.11 cm can be tested. Variations in residual shear strength were investigated for normally consolidated versus overconsolidated specimens, for specimens sheared at different rates of peripheral displacement, and for specimens prepared by several different remolding procedures. (Author Modified Abstract).

Book Advanced Experimental Unsaturated Soil Mechanics

Download or read book Advanced Experimental Unsaturated Soil Mechanics written by Alessandro Tarantino and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2005-07-14 with total page 590 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The field of experimental unsaturated soil mechanics has grown considerably over the last decade. In the laboratory and in the field, innovative techniques have been introduced into mechanical, hydraulic, and geo-environmental testing. Normally, this information is widely dispersed throughout journals and conference proceedings and it is often difficult to identify suitable equipment and instrumentation for research or professional purposes. In this volume, however, the authors bring together the latest research in laboratory and field testing techniques, and the equipment employed, and examine the current state-of-the-art in a forum devoted solely to experimental unsaturated soil mechanics. The papers published in the proceedings were peer-reviewed by internationally-recognized researchers. The topics tackled by the papers include suction measurement, suction control, mechanical and hydraulic laboratory testing, geo-environmental testing, and field-testing.
