The first phase involved the analysis of the effect of the speed of a moving load on the dynamic deflections of a gear tooth. A single spur gear tooth modelled using finite elements was subjected to moving loads with variable velocities. The tooth tip deflection time histories were plotted, from which it was seen that the tooth tip deflection consisted of a quasistatic response with an oscillatory response superimposed on it whose amplitude was dependent on the type of load engagement. Including the rim in the analysis added flexibility to the model but did not change the general behaviour of the system. The second phase involved an investigation to determine the effect on the dynamic response of the inertia of the gear tooth. A simplified analysis using meshing cantilever beams was used. In one case, the beams were assumed massless, in the other, the mass (inertia) of the beams are included. From this analysis it was found that the inertia of the tooth did not affect the dynamic response of meshing cantilever beams. Keyword: Gear noise; Vibration; Machine design; Finite element analysis.

Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all con cerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an interna tional publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Cor poration of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 28 (thesis year 1 983) a total of 10,661 theses titles from 26 Canadian and 197 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for these titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this important annual reference work. While Volume 28 reports theses submitted in-1983, on occasion, certain univer sities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.

Book excerpt: While there are numerous theoretical and experimental investigations of dynamic behavior of gear pairs of higher quality grades, very little is known about the same when certain classes of manufacturing errors are present. This study aims at investigating the effects of tooth index errors, one of the most common types of manufacturing errors. Using the changes in stresses along the tooth root regions as the metric, an experimental study is executed here to (i) establish a baseline dynamic behavior under no tangible index error and (ii) characterize the changes caused by tightly-controlled intentional index errors to this baseline dynamic behavior. For this, various gears having different forms of index errors are paired with an instrumented gear having no such errors. For each gear pair, tests are performed within wide ranges of torque and speed. A data processing scheme is proposed to normalize the measured stress signals to multiplication factor. It is shown that the baseline dynamic response represented solely by the dynamic stress factor is altered significantly by transient vibrations induced by the indexing errors, in some cases fully altering the baseline dynamic behavior and increasing the stress multiplication factors significantly. The experimental database formed in this study is expected to guide much needed theoretical studies on this topic.

In this study, the irregular type of tooth spacing error is incorporated with the regular type ones to determine their effect on gear dynamic response. Linear and Parabolic tooth profile modification are applied to evaluate their influence on the dynamic loads of gear systems with regular or irregular tooth spacing errors. All dynamic analyses are conducted using the NASA gear dynamics code, DANST program.The objective of this study is to examine the relationship between gear dynamic load, type and extent of tooth spacing error, and profile modifications. Results obtained from this study can provide proper tooth profile design to minimize the dynamic response of the spur gear systems for a better transmission design.
