Book Factors the Contribute to Motivation and Burnout Among Teachers of Students with Emotional Behavioral Disorders

Download or read book Factors the Contribute to Motivation and Burnout Among Teachers of Students with Emotional Behavioral Disorders written by Adam Joseph Brown and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 87 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this study, I explored motivation and burnout of novice (1-3 years of teaching experience) and veteran (10 or more years of teaching experience) teachers of students with Emotional Behavioral Disorders (EBD). The educators who participated in the study work in a regional public day school that serves school districts across a large metropolitan area in the southeastern United States. The study focused on one program within the public day school, which serves students with EBD in self-contained classrooms. Data were collected from semi-structured interviews of teachers who met the experience level of either novice or veteran status. Similar themes emerged throughout the data collected. The most prominent similarities included a perception of unrealistic expectations set by administration, need for increased support, and importance of establishing a routine to effectively disconnect from work. Additionally, there were differences between the groups of teachers interviewed. Novice teachers indicated a need to develop a stronger sense of self-efficacy and direct support from their administrators. Veteran teachers sought more emotional support from their administrators. These findings present an opportunity for the organization to explore ways to address these commonalities and differences being experienced by novice and veteran teachers and to reduce the experience of burnout among teachers of students with EBD.

Book Emotional Behavioral Disorder EBD Teachers Workload School Support and Intention to Stay Or Leave

Download or read book Emotional Behavioral Disorder EBD Teachers Workload School Support and Intention to Stay Or Leave written by Keith Anthony Fairclough (Jr.) and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Attrition among Emotional/Behavioral Disorder (EBD) teachers in El County School District (ECSD) has been a problem. This study aimed to identify the leading causes of EBD teacher attrition within ESCD. Two research questions were researched to ascertain the causes of attrition: "How do EBD teachers describe their workload manageability in teaching EBD students?" and "What support do EBD teachers receive to manage their workload, and how does the support influence their intention to stay or leave?" An exploratory approach was taken to discover the leading causes of EBD attrition. The research design chosen for this study was a qualitative multiple case study using semi-structured interviews of seven EBD teachers and four administrators who oversee EBD units. It was discovered that workload manageability, mainly teaching and preparing for multiple grade levels, was the most significant source of stress for EBD teachers. It was also found that while administrative support was important to EBD teachers, the type/source of support was not as important as the quality and quantity of support available to manage their workloads. The findings from this study give district-level and school-based administrators a starting point to being intervening to retain their EBD teachers. It is recommended that administrators make sure EBD program built-in supports are appropriately trained to work with EBD students. They must also check in with their EBD teachers to solve problems proactively. Administrators can also ensure that EBD teachers are supported by grade-level teams, school communities, or individuals from the EBD units and have easy access to lesson plans suitable for EBD classrooms. Finally, they can improve data collection and conduct exit interviews of EBD teachers who leave their positions to see what concerns caused them to make this decision.

Book Burnout as a Function of Eysenck s Neuroticism Factor in Teachers Working with Childern with Emotional Behavioral Disorders

Download or read book Burnout as a Function of Eysenck s Neuroticism Factor in Teachers Working with Childern with Emotional Behavioral Disorders written by Shannon J. Prince and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The purpose of this study is to observe the level of neuroticism in special education teachers working with children with Emotional/Behavioral Disorders (EBD) and how it is related to the level of burnout (i.e., chronic state of physical, emotional and mental exhaustion; Center & Steventon, 2001) they experience. Two surveys, Friedman's Questionnaire on Teacher Burnout and Eysenck's Personality Questionnaire Brief Version, were delivered to special education teachers working with EBD students in self-contained classrooms in Western New York. The data were analyzed by correlating the teachers' level of neuroticism with their level of burnout. Results indicated a significant correlation between neuroticism and burnout."--Abstract.

Book Balancing Act

Download or read book Balancing Act written by Amber Lynn Dill (Graduate student) and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: Teachers of students with emotional and behavioral disabilities (EBD Teachers) that work in a self-contained setting are more likely to experience symptoms of burnout than their general education and special education teacher peers. Attrition for this group of teachers continues to be at an all-time high, leading to poor outcomes for some of our most vulnerable and misunderstood students. Many teachers experience burnout, but there is growing evidence that EBD teachers experience these emotions more acutely and with greater frequency due to the specific needs of their classroom population. Though much of the research focuses on special educators as a unified group, this study highlights the uniqueness of the self-contained setting and seeks to understand the distinctive experience of EBD teachers. Using qualitative interviews that are framed by the Conservation of Resources Theory, this study examined how EBD teachers balance limited resources with the unique demands of their job. Exploring how these teachers balance limited resources and how they perceive their work is vital to determining action steps toward improved outcomes mitigating burnout and attrition. Findings based on the analysis of EBD teacher interviews are presented, along with recommendations in the areas of practice, policy, and future research.

Book Work Environment and Job related Burnout

Download or read book Work Environment and Job related Burnout written by Bankston J. Dozier and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 65 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Job-related burnout has come to be most often defined as a syndrome of emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and a reduced sense of personal efficacy that can occur among individuals working within the human services professions. Frequently debilitating in nature, job-related burnout is often a consequence of chronic occupational stressors; thus, the more stressful the work environment, the greater the potential for burnout to occur. This is especially true of work environments in which organizational support is perceived as being limited. With this in mind, the present study focuses on a group of professionals who work within what many individuals would agree as being one of the most stress-inducing environments: the prison system. Mental health counselors, like doctors, are often only called upon when individuals are in some type of crisis and desire an immediate fix of some type. Already a stress inducing profession, when one adds the stress of working within a prison environment, and the often limited resources associated with it, to the mix, one can easily see why burnout becomes a distinct possibility for individuals choosing this career path. In an endeavor to expand the understanding of the relationship between burnout and organizational social support, the present study examines the strength of the relationships between each of the three dimensions of job-related burnout and the levels of perceived organizational support for mental health counselors working in a prison setting. In addition to providing some basic demographic information, all participants completed the Maslach Burnout Inventory Human Services Survey and the Work Relationships Index. Correlational analyses were used to determine the strength of the hypothesized relationships between the determined variables. The results indicated that although there were distinct relationships between each of the three experienced dimensions of job-related burnout and perceived level of organizational support, only the correlation between level of experienced emotional exhaustion and perceived level of organizational support was found to be significant at the p >.05 level of significance. Based on the findings, recommendations for improving employees' perceptions of organizational support and reducing the number of employees' work-related stressors were provided.
